Abstract

This article is a review of the book Tahafut At-Tahafut, written by Ibn Rusyd. The main focus of the discussion is Ibn Rusyd's criticism of Al-Ghazali's view of the concept of Eternity of the Universe (Qidam al-‘Alam), which highlights differences in understanding the origins, eternity, and relationship between time and motion in the context of the creation of the universe. The ideas and findings in this book are very useful for understanding Ibn Rushd's thinking more deeply in the context of classical Islamic philosophy. Ibn Rushd's criticism serves as a means to foster critical thinking among Muslims, so that they do not easily fall into blind imitation. The results of the study show that Tahafut al-Tahafut is Ibn Rushd's rational defense of philosophy and his attempt to harmonize reason with revelation. He emphasized that nature depends on the eternal will of God and made a significant contribution to the development of Islamic rationalism and Western thought. Despite its shortcomings in terms of linguistic complexity and heavy arguments, this work remains valuable as an important foundation for dialogue between Islamic philosophy and theology.

Abstract

This journal examines the revival and modernization of the Islamic world from the 18th to the 20th centuries (1701-2000). This period was an important time in Islamic history when various regions of the Islamic world underwent social, political, economic, and intellectual changes in response to internal decline and the influence of Western colonialism. The purpose of this study is to provide an in-depth understanding and insight into the process of the revival of Muslims, the movement to renew thought, and modernization efforts in various fields such as education, government, and religion. The research method used is a qualitative approach with a literature study technique, namely examining primary and secondary literature sources relevant to the theme of Islamic revival and modernization. The results of the study show the emergence of reformist figures such as Muhammad bin Abdul Wahab, Jamaluddin al-Afghani, Muhammad Abduh, Muhammad Iqbal, and from Indonesia, KH. Ahmad Dahlan and KH. Hasyim Asy'ari. They had ideas to modernize and conclusion reform Islam to suit the challenges of the times. Furthermore, this modernization process not only strengthened Islamic identity but also paved the way for the intellectual and political revival of Muslims in the modern era.

Abstract

The study of the dynamics of Arabic civilization and Islamic studies during the Pre-Prophetic period (570–610 CE) is highly significant and deserves deeper scholarly attention. This is because discussions surrounding this period continue to generate ongoing academic debate. This paper aims to examine three main aspects. First, the paradigm of Arabic civilization and Islamic studies during the Pre-Prophetic era. Second, the internal and external factors influencing these dynamics. Third, the positive and negative implications of these dynamics during the Pre-Prophetic period. This research employs a library-based method using an article/paper review approach grounded in Harold Lasswell’s theoretical framework. Data were collected through systematic literature review procedures and analyzed using content analysis techniques. The findings reveal three major points. First, the paradigms of Arabic civilization during the Pre-Prophetic period took three forms: (1) tribal solidarity, (2) adherence to Wastani religion (idol worship), and (3) a largely illiterate (ummiy) society. Second, internally, three factors influenced these dynamics: (1) tribal fanaticism and strong loyalty to tradition, (2) dominance in trade and commerce, and (3) eloquence in poetry. Externally, three factors also played significant roles: (1) Jewish and Christian communities, (2) international trade routes, and (3) the noble character of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Third, the positive implications of the dynamics of the Arabic language and Islamic studies during this period include: (1) strong social solidarity, (2) moral awareness and a sense of justice, and (3) the development of Arabic as a meaningful and guiding language in life. Meanwhile, the negative implications include: (1) intellectual arrogance, (2) social inequality, and (3) cultural resistance. In conclusion, the dynamics of Arabic civilization and Islamic studies prior to Prophethood constituted a historical foundation that shaped the social, cultural, and intellectual structure of Arab society, while simultaneously paving the way for the emergence of Islamic civilization before the mission of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
