Abstract

This study aims at describing the teaching process of English in acceleration class at SMUN 3 Malang in terms of teaching materials, media, and teaching techniques. This study is a descriptive qualitative research. The subject was the English teacher in acceleration class at SMUN 3 Malang. Findings shows that the teacher used three different English books and other source material such as English newspaper, pictures, posters, and some materials from the internet as the teaching materials. The teacher used some kinds of media in his teaching, such as: audio media, visual media, and audio-visual media. He used language lab for teaching listening program. For the teaching techniques, the teacher used some kinds of teaching techniques; they are; lecturing, games, simulation, and discussion techniques. Obviously, students speak all at once trying to accomplish their task, and this causes noise that may bother other colleagues. The qualifications of English teachers in acceleration class should be different with the qualification of English teachers in regular class. They also have to conduct a better entrance selection system for acceleration class students. The criteria that must be passed are not only IQ test score, interview, and academic score, but also creativity test score. Key words: acceleration class, teaching material and media, teaching technique

Abstract

Mastering grammar seems very challenging for English foreign language learners. Learning grammar constructions that they do not find or have different system to their first language bring some consequences. One of them is on learning about gerund and to infinitive. The objectives of this study are to describe the ability on mastering gerund and infinitive form and to analyze the factors affecting them to learning its form. This study used descriptive method. The respondents of this research were the students who took English Structure subject on second year of Indraprasta PGRI University Jakarta. Moreover, the data was collected through the instruments, and they were test and questionnaire. The data was analyzed descriptively, and it was tabulated and calculated. Next, it was presented in percent form. After analyzing the data descriptively, the research result is the ability of the students on mastering the using of gerund is on very poor range that is 41.82% (23 out of 55), in other words, it can be said that more than half respondents were still in low understanding of gerund, in the same time, mastering the using to-infinitive form is on very poor range that is 36.36% (20 out of 55), or it can be said that the respondents were still low in understanding of to infinitive. The factors affecting them were being passive, lack of motivation, slow learning, less practice in doing exercises, poor of literature, and not learning from the mistakes. These findings may encourage the lecturer of English Structure to find out more ways to improve student’s ability especially on using gerund and to infinitive for Indonesian EFL Learners in University level.

Abstract

The purpose of the research is to analyze morphological and syntactical errors in a procedure text that made by the students in private vocational school in Bogor. The research method that used to analyze morphological and syntactical error in the procedure text that made by the students is descriptive qualitative method that based only on a few procedure texts. After the researcher analyze the procedure text, the researcher found that the students still make the morphological and syntactical errors in their writings.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to find out the students ability in identifying the generic structure of recount text, the problems faced by the students and solution of the problems faced by the students in identifying the generic structure of recount text. This method used descriptive qualitative method. The writer used essay test, 10 items. The writer took sample randomly, thirty six students. The findings of this research are by analyzing the students’ test which are done by the students about of identifying the recount text . After the data have been collected and analyzed, the score of the students’ ability to identify the generic structure of recount text is 73.9. It means that the students’ ability in identifying the generic structure of recount text is fair. However, the problems that faced by the students in identifying the generic structure of recount text are the students found the difficulty in understanding the meaning of the word and question, and they can’t identify the generic structure of recount text completely especially the part of event. Then, to overcome the problems, the writer offers some suggestions. They are the teacher should give more exercises in analyzing the generic structure especially event, give more attentions to the result of the assignment which are given to the students.Key words: genre, generic structure, and recount text

Abstract

The research aims at analyzing the socio-cultural semiotic that characterize the deixis in taglines. Such types of deixis are analyzed qualitatively by examining the socio-cultural functions using “Sign Mapping of Roland Barthes”. The analysis focuses in describing the signifier and signified as well as the meaning of denotative and connotative characterized the deixis in taglines of various advertisements. Findings have shown that the signifiers and signified concepts function to inform, to challenge, to emphasize, and to persuade, of the consumers as the addressee. The types of deixis occur into such types of pronominals deixis (she, you, I, me), nominal deixis (girl, age, the city), verbal (blow, drive, come, follow, let, change), adverbial (in her face, anywhere, Marlboro country, when you can fly), and grammatical deixis (imperative, statement, interrogative). The denotative meaning is reflected from the use of signifiers that serves the real of sense of the product referred to, i.e., the commercial product that is divided into categories, man’s category, woman’s category, and unmarked category. The connotative meaning relates to some cultural values, such as pleasure, masculinity, feminity, passion, luck, beauty, freedom, and the sense of belonging.Key words: Socio-cultural semiotic analysis, deixis, tagline

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe aim of this research study is to investigate the significant difference in English grammar achievement scores of the students taught through cooperative learning and those taught by whole class traditional method. The participants were the students of Indraprasta PGRI University who took Grammar subject on the fifth semester that was split into two groups those are the control group (non-cooperative learning) and experiment group (cooperative learning). The number of the participants in the control group (non-cooperative learning) is 25 participants and the experiment group (cooperative learning) is 25 participants too. The method used is a quantitative experiment method using True Experimental Design specifically on Posttest-Only Control Design and the data is tested by t-test. The result of data analysis shows the differences on average (Mean) the control group (non-cooperative learning) is 63, 52; analyzed case as amount is 25; Standard Deviation is 19.194 ,and average (Mean) the experiment group (cooperative learning) is 79,20; analyzed case as amount is 25; Standard Deviation is 12,111. The T- Test shows that the Sig (2-tailed) is 0,001 <0, 05 means Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. In conclusion, there is a significant difference in English grammar achievement scores of the students taught through cooperative language learning.

Abstract

 The research aims to analyze the error in using questions word on second grade students of MTs. Hidayatussalafiyah. Question is one of important aspect that students need to master not only in writing but also speaking. There are several types of questions that students need to learn. The types of questions that discuss in this research are “Yes/No-Questions” and “Wh-Questions”. The data are collected through observation, discussion, books and also documentation. By the data, the research finds the most error the students made in each category. The research findings also prove the students need more explanation in forming questions especially in writing. Based on the result, the student faced more difficult in forming “Yes/No-Questions” than in “Wh-Questions” category. They made mistake for 298 or 65.07% in “Yes/No-Questions and 160 or 34.93% in “Wh-Questions” from the total mistakes. The most difficult question for them in “Yes/No-Questions” is to form “are you studying your grammar book?” or using “be (is/am/are) in present progressive tense”. The total number of mistakes for this questions are 26 or 8.4%. And, for the “Wh-Questions”, they made more mistake to form “what time did you eat lunch?” or using “what time” to ask about the time. Key words: error, analysis, question words

Abstract

The aim of this study is to obtain empirical data and to analyze about whether or not there are the effects of cognitive competence and self esteem towards student’s reading comprehension. The study was conducted at the State Junior High Schools in South Jakarta from November 2012 to January 2013. The research method is survey with multiple-regression analysis technique. The research findings show three points. Firstly, there is a signinificant effect of cognitive competence and self-esteem towards student’s reading comprehension with multiple coefficient correlation is 0,816. Secondly, there is a significant effect of cognitive competence towards student’s reading comprehension since tobserved is higher than ttable (4.728 > 1.669). Thirdly, there is a significant effect of self-esteem towards student’s reading comprehension since tobserved is higher than ttable (6.476 > 1.669). Based on the research findings, the student’s reading comprehension can be developed by increasing the cognitive competence and self-esteem of the students

Abstract

Speaking is an important skill in language learning, it is the key of active communication. As teaching speaking is important aspect in language learning process, this is a crucial part of second language learning and teaching. Despite this fact, for many years, teaching speaking in Indonesian context has been undervalued and English language teachers have continued to teach speaking as a repetition of drills or memorization of dialogues. However, today's education world requires that the goal of teaching speaking should improve students' communicative skills. Only in this way, the students can express themselves depend on the social context. In this study, the researcher attempts to conduct a research about the use of guided grammar and its impact in speaking achievement for students of oil palm plantation processing technology program of Politeknik Kelapa Sawit Bekasi. The activities of learning grammar provide an excellent opportunity for the learners to develop this skill. The result shows that at the beginning of guided grammar, students' speaking ability is still very limited. But when the speaking assignments in guided grammar went on for quite a long time, students were getting used to speak in grammatically correct way. Students felt that their speaking skills had improved and had become better than before.

Abstract

This research is aimed to get the empirical data and to find out the effect of Community Language Learning and learning interest towards students’ speaking ability at a private college in Bekasi. The research was conducted at school of foreign languages Cipto Hadi Pranoto in Bekasi. The total sample of this research is by 60 students. The technique of collecting data of teaching method (CLL) and learning interest used questionnaires and the speaking skill was acquired from the test. The research of the instrument has tested and tried by the validity and the reliability test used the program of SPSS 17.0 (Statistics Program Social Science). The result of the study identifies There is significant effect of learning method towards students speaking ability. Keyword: Community Language Learning, Learning Interest, and Speaking Ability
