Abstract

This study sheds lights on whether the use of Initiation, Response and Feedback (IRF) in teaching facilitates learner-initiated communication and gives learning opportunity for learners to engage in classroom interaction. This study applies the IRF framework proposed by Sinclair and Coulthard (1975), Initiation from (Mackey (2012) and teacher talk by CUllen (1988). The method applied for this study is qualitative method by classroom observation as the technique for data collection. The video records the classroom observation. The data are taken from classroom interaction of conversation class. The result of this study is the IRF pattern which mostly occurs in classroom interaction can be used to analyze classroom interaction. Additionally, the teaching using IRF pattern can facilitate learner-initiated communication and give learning opportunities for leaners to engage more in classroom interaction.Key words: IRF Pattern, learner-initiated communication, classroom interaction

Abstract

Novel as the most famous genre of literature always succeeds to please its readers with its own way. It offers many stylistic language features such as onomatopoeia that can alure the readers to enter its world. Onomatopoeia is one of the most appealing feature in the novel Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban. This research discusses the onomatopoeic words in Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling and its translation version Harry Potter dan Tawanan Azkaban.    For the purpose of the research, two problems are formulated. The first problem is what word classes of onomatopoeia that are found in the novel Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban. The second problem of the research is on the procedures applied in translating the onomatopoeia found in the novel.            This research is a qualitative and library research. The data are the onomatopoeia words found in the novel Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling and its translation version Harry Potter dan Tawanan Azkaban.Based on the research analysis, followings are the answers to the research problems respectively. From the data collected, there are 58 onomatopoeic words found. The onomatopoeic words are of different word classes; namely verb, noun, adjective and interjection. Most of the onomatopoeic words are verbs. To answer the second problem, there are five translation procedures used by the translator in translating the onomatopoeic words of the source text into the target text. They are borrowing (2 data), literal translation (14 data), transposition (8 data), modulation (1 data) and equivalence (33 data). Equivalence appears to be the most frequently used.

Abstract

ABSTRACT. Blended learning is gaining popularity as an effective method to deliver courses. Foreign language instruction is adopting opportunities to apply blended learning. This paper looks at the essence of blended learning and foreign language instruction by defining those two terms. The literature has clearly unveiled the principles of each learning method that constitutes foreign language delivered via blended learning. It leads to major elements that need to be considered when designing blended foreign language instruction. Sufficient input, adequate interaction, plenty of feedback, and meaningful tasks are major components of building blended foreign language courses. Some recent studies have successfully implemented those principles in designing blended learning foreign language instruction; however, the studies also disclose some challenges.  Keywords: Blended learning, foreign language learning, foreign language instructions   ABSTRAK Blended learning semakin populer sebagai metode yang efektif dalam kegiatan pengajaran. Metode ini juga diterapkan dalam pengajaran bahasa asing. Artikel ini membahas esensi blended learning dan pengajaran bahasa asing dengan mendefinisikan kedua istilah tersebut. Telah banyak studi literatur yang membahas dan mendiskusikan tentang prinsip-prinsip metode pembelajaran bahasa asing yang disampaikan melalui blended learning. Ini mengarah pada elemen-elemen inti yang perlu dipertimbangkan dalam merancang pengajaran bahasa asing yang disampaikan melalui blended learning. Input yang cukup, interaksi yang memadai, adanya umpan balik yang memadai, dan tugas yang bermakna adalah komponen-komponen utama yang perlu diperhatikan dalam pengajaran bahasa asing yang menerapkan blended learning. Beberapa studi terbaru telah berhasil menerapkan prinsip-prinsip tersebut dalam merancang pembelajaran bahasa asing yang menerapkan blended learning. Di sisi yang lain, artikel ini juga memaparkan beberapa tantangan pengajaran bahasa asing yang menerapkan metode blended learning. Kata kunci: blended learning, pembelajaran bahasa asing, pengajaran bahasa asing

Abstract

Considering and comprehending the right way of student in learning are requirement to become an effective language teacher. Long (1991) essentially claims that the building block of learning a second language can be found in negotiation for meaning, or the interaction, reformulation, and feedback that occur when people try to communicate. This study present the findings of research carried out to collect data of learner’s emotional respond to oral corrective feedback process.In this research, the researcher uses both qualitative and quantitative approach. It is qualitatively describe the emotional respond of the students to the teacher’s Corrective Feedbacks on their performances in microteaching class at University of Nusantara PGRI Kediri by collecting the data based on planning and conducting skill of an instruction. The data base comprises questionnaire of students’ emotional respond of the feedback in the naturalistic classroom situation. The quantitatively analysis of the data showed that more than half of the corrective feedback made by the teacher is appreciated and needed by the students. However, consistency would become a crucial point for them. It is, thus, recommended that this line of enquiry be followed-up by other researcher so that teachers, teacher trainers and policy makers

Abstract

Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi keefektifan context clues terhadap pemahaman membaca teks deskripsi mahasiswa program studi pendidikan bahasa Inggris pada semester tiga di 8 grade of SMPN 10 Depok. Selain itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat jenis context clues yang mana yang lebih mudah di pahami mahasiswa dalam mengidentifikasi kata baru. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian experimen. Populasi penelitian adalah mahasiswa semester tiga pada program studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris 8 grade of SMPN 10 Depok tahun akademik 2012-2013. Sampel dari penelitian ini diambil dengan cara cluster random sampling yang terdiri dari tiga kelas paralel dan homogeny yaitu kelas A, B, dan C. Sampel dibagi menjadi dua kelas yaitu kelas A sebagai kelas experimen yang diajarkan dengan context clues sedangkan kelas B sebagai kelas kontrol diajar dengan menggunakan kamus. Tes pilihan berganda digunakan untuk mengukur pemahaman membaca siswa untuk memperoleh data dengan pretest dan posttest. Untuk melihat keefektifan dari context clues, data di analisis dengan menggunakan ttest. Dari analisis data, ditemukan bahwa mahasiswa yang diajar dengan context clues lebih baik pemahaman membaca daripada menggunakan kamus. Untuk memahami kata sulit, mahasiswa lebih mudah dalam penentuan example clues. Dengan kata lain, mengajar reading dengan menggunakan context clues memiliki pengaruh yang siknifikan jika dibandingkan dengan yang menggunakan kamus. Kesimpulannya, hasil nilai membaca mahasiswa dari kelas eksperimen dan control berbeda.

Abstract

The purpose of the research is to know the effect of Teaching techniques; Role Play, Information Gap and Learning style; Right Brain Dominant and Left Brain Dominant toward student’s Speaking Skill at Private Vocational School in South Jakarta. To collect the data, the writer persuades two techniques in teaching English speaking skill and learning style to know the characteristics of the students in learning. To improve the quality of  teaching and learning process the writer uses an appropriate material with the curriculum and the syllabus. The method used in this research is experiment method. The data got by the writer by giving a Speaking Skill exercise and also a questionnaire. After analyzing the data, some conclusions about the effect of role play, information gap technique and learning style have been gotten by the writer. According to ANOVA table, the Sig. Score of teaching technique is 0,000 which is lower than 0,05 (0,000 < 0,05 ) means that the hypothesis works and Ho is rejected. So there is an influence between teaching technique towards speaking skill. The sig. Score of learning style is 0,968 is higher than 0,05 (0,968 >  0,05) means that Ho is accepted. So there is no influence between learning style towards speaking skill. The sig. Score of interaction is 0,562 is higher than 0,05 ( 0,562 > 0,05) means that Ho is accepted. So there is no influence interaction between teaching technique and learning style towards speaking skill

Abstract

This research is aimed to propose a model of learning for the English teacher to improve reading comprehension of discourse in English and see whether the Buddy Vocabulary Cards Technique has reached the level of effectiveness to be presented to students. The research was held at SMK AL-MAKMUR in South Jakarta Class 1, the population of 239 students with a sample that is taken randomly about 44 students. Research methods are Library Studies and Field Studies with through debriefing and give some questions. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the Buddy Vocabulary Cards technique can be used to improve students' reading comprehension. The result of study identifies that the average value of the students have achieved good category, with an average value of 6.8.

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing the integrity of editorial cartoon discourse through the devices of cohesion and the patterns of coherence that appear in language and images. The method used in this study is a qualitative method. The results show that the relationship of language and images in the discourse helped to create the topic of each text. The connection between language and images is known from the role of language which gives information on the images, or vice versa, the images clarify things that are expressed through language. The amount of panel-to-panel transition which is higher than the amount of language cohesive devices indicates that in PR buat Presiden, the images play more important role than language in developing the integrity of discourse. The data show that without images, it is often difficult to understand the language. Key words: discourse, editorial cartoon, cohesion, coherence

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to figure out the dominant factor causing the errors of vowels pronounced by second-semester students of Informatics which is basically nonnative speakers of English. The approach applied in this study is qualitative. The data were collected via observation and recording which were constructed in the form of field-notes then analyzed and measured in accordance to English phonetic transcription in “English Pronouncing Dictionary” written by Jones (1997).  This study involved 40 students of Informatics English subject at Informatics Program of Indraprasta PGRI University where English is only supporting subject. The data shows that the respondents were really lack of English pronouncing skill, especially vowels as 42 of 58 words containing vowels are pronounced incorrectly. As the result of study, we can conclude that the dominant error made by students is Interlingual errors (58,6% or 838 of 1.430 errors made by students), the errors occurred due to the interference of students? native language.

Abstract

Language as the basic right of children is the most important thing to build their characters that required from their closest environment, family. Mother is the first person who will put and create the children's characters. The use of positive language by a mother will build on children's positive characters. Therefore, this research aims at determining the use of positive language by mothers in Majelis Taklim Baitul Hasan Jagakarsa, on children education to build their positive behavior. This research employing a cross-sectional survey method with attitudinal questionnaire of ten questions with the total respondents of 118 people. By implementing the formula of positive language, mothers will hopefully understand more the use of positive language on children education.
