Abstract

Purpose - This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Index Card Match strategy in enhancing learning activities and nahwu learning outcomes among students of class 2D at Pondok Pesantren Darunnajah Jakarta. Design/Methodology/Approach - This research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design based on the Kemmis and Taggart model, involving 27 students. The study was conducted in two cycles, each consisting of the stages of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data were collected through interviews, classroom observations, achievement tests, and documentation. The data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative and quantitative approaches to provide a comprehensive understanding of the learning process and outcomes. Findings - The results reveal a significant improvement in students’ learning activities, which increased from 74.66% in Cycle I to 85.93% in Cycle II. In addition, students’ learning outcomes improved substantially, as the pass rate increased from 77.77% with an average score of 6.96 in Cycle I to 100% with an average score of 8.96 in Cycle II. These results indicate that the Index Card Match strategy effectively promotes student engagement and enhances achievement in nahwu learning. Research Limitations/Implications - This study was limited to one class and focused exclusively on nahwu instruction. However, the findings offer meaningful implications for Arabic language teachers in implementing active learning strategies. Future studies should involve larger samples and comparative designs to strengthen the generalizability of the findings and expand their contribution to Arabic language pedagogy.

Abstract

Purpose - This study examines how two major Arabic-language news outlets, Al Jazeera Arabic and CNN Arabic, construct divergent discursive narratives surrounding the death of American conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Design/Methodology/Approach -Employing Teun A. van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this qualitative study analyzes eight news texts published between September and October 2025. The analysis covers three textual levels macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure, while integrating socio-cognitive models and broader sociopolitical contexts. All quotations from Arabic sources are preserved in their original form to maintain analytical accuracy. Findings - The findings reveal a systematic divergence in media framing between the two outlets. Al Jazeera Arabic situates the incident within a broader narrative of political polarization, ideological conflict, and structural instability in the United States, thereby transforming the event into a symbol of wider sociopolitical crisis. In contrast, CNN Arabic frames the same event as a procedural criminal case, relying predominantly on official statements, law enforcement sources, and institutional discourse. These differences are not merely stylistic, but reflect contrasting socio-cognitive models, editorial ideologies, and institutional orientations regarding the role of journalism and political interpretation. Research Limitation/Implications - Although limited to two outlets, the research demonstrates the usefulness of CDA in unveiling ideological layers and interpretive dynamics in Arab media coverage of U.S. political events.

Abstract

Purpose - This study aims to describe the implementation of the Change of Pairs strategy to improve learning activities and Arabic learning outcomes for class IIB students at Darunnajah 14 Nurul Ilmi Islamic Boarding School, Banten, in the 2024/2025 academic year through two-cycle classroom action research.. Design/Methodology/Approach - This research employed Classroom Action Research using the Kemmis and McTaggart cyclical model conducted in two cycles. The subjects were 22 students selected through total sampling. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and achievement tests, then analyzed using percentage analysis and N-Gain calculation based on Hake's formula. Findings - The research results show that student learning activities increased from 99% in the first cycle to 100% in the second cycle, while mastery of learning outcomes improved from 95% to 100%. The N-Gain score of 0.92 falls into the high category (g ≥ 0.70), thereby confirming the high effectiveness of the Change of Pairs strategy in improving Arabic learning outcomes. Research Limitations/Implications - Teachers at Islamic boarding schools are recommended to implement the Change of Pairs strategy in Arabic language teaching. Future researchers may combine this strategy with other learning models such as role play or problem-based learning to explore broader improvement potential.

Abstract

Purpose- This study aims to reveal the forms of modality and propositions found in the short story Laila wa Di’bu by Kamil Kailani, using Charles J. Fillmore’s case grammar theory.  Design/Methodology/Approach- This study employs a qualitative descriptive method using content analysis techniques. The primary data are derived from the short story Laila wa Di’bu and are classified based on case roles according to Charles J. Fillmore’s case grammar theory. The analytical process is conducted through the identification of sentence structures, followed by the classification of modality elements and propositions in accordance with the theoretical framework applied.  Findings- The research findings indicate that the short story exhibits a complex sentence structure. Four dominant forms of modality are identified, namely tense modality, negation modality, adverbial modality, and aspect modality. In addition, seven types of propositions are found to function as markers of semantic relationships within sentences, namely agentive, purposive, objective, locative, temporal, comitative, and benefactive cases.  Research Limitations/Implications- This study focuses on a single literary work; therefore, the scope of the semantic case analysis remains limited to the textual context of the short story Laila wa Di’bu. The findings demonstrate the strength of the case grammar approach as an effective analytical framework for explaining the interaction between syntactic structure and narrative meaning. This approach has the potential to be applied to other Arabic literary works to reveal how sentence structures construct moral messages, character dynamics, and the overall meaning of the story.

Abstract

Purpose- This article aims to identify and classify the types of locations in the novel Ar-Raṣāṣah Lā Tazāl Fī Jaibī  by Ihsan Abdul Quddus and analyze the translation strategies used based on Peter Newmark's translation theory. This study seeks to explain how these strategies are applied to produce accurate translations that are culturally appropriate. Design/Methodology/Approach- The research used a qualitative descriptive approach with a focus on collocation translation. Data was obtained from the novel Ar-Raṣāṣah Lā Tazāl Fī Jaibī  as the primary data source along with its translation into Indonesian. Analysis was carried out through the identification of collocations, classification of types, and determination of translation strategies used according to Newmark's categories. Findings— The results of the study show that there are three main strategies used in collocation translation, namely Cultural Equivalent, Literal Translation, and Functional Equivalent. The Cultural Equivalent strategy is chosen to preserve the cultural nuances inherent in the source language, while Literal Translation is used to maintain direct equivalence of meaning. The Functional Equivalent strategy appears to be applied to collocations that require functional equivalence in the target language. Research Limitation/Implications- This study is limited to one literary work, so its findings do not reflect the diversity of collocations in Arabic literary texts more broadly. Nevertheless, this study makes an important contribution to understanding the patterns of Arabic-Indonesian collocation translation and can serve as a reference for translators in facing the challenges of cultural differences and choosing the right strategy.

Abstract

Purpose – This article aims to examine students’ perceptions of the level of difficulty of I‘rāb and to analyze its impact on their motivation to learn Nahwu by considering the cognitive and affective dimensions involved in the learning process. Design/Methodology/Approach – This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collected through an open-ended questionnaire. The sample consisted of 39 undergraduate students of the Arabic Language Education program, selected using purposive sampling based on their experience in studying I‘rāb. The data were analyzed thematically through data reduction, categorization, and conclusion drawing to obtain a comprehensive understanding of students’ learning experiences. Findings – The findings indicate that most students perceive I‘rāb as a difficult subject due to the complexity of grammatical rules, the abstract nature of syntactic concepts, and the high demands of sentence structure analysis. These perceptions are closely linked to cognitive challenges and emotional responses, such as doubt and anxiety. Nevertheless, the difficulty of I‘rāb was also found to function as a challenge-based motivator for some students. Research Limitation/Implications – This study is limited by the scope of respondents and its focus on a single institutional context. However, the findings offer important implications for developing adaptive Nahwu teaching strategies that balance cognitive demands and affective support.
