Abstract

A paradigm is a set of underlying beliefs or convictions that guide an individual’s actions or their perspective on themselves and their environment, influencing their thinking, attitudes and behaviour. The Islamic paradigm is a framework of thought derived from Islamic teachings, encompassing the Qur’an, the Hadith and the intellectual heritage of Islam (the ijtihad of the scholars), which views reality through the lens of tawhid—that is, everything is understood within the framework of the Oneness of Allah SWT (tawhid).         Teachers in Islam hold a very noble and honourable position, described by various terms, each reflecting different dimensions and functions, namely: Mu’allim (instructor), Mudarris (a teacher at a madrasah), Murshid (spiritual guide), Murabbi (educator who nurtures and guides), Muaddib (shaper of manners/character) and Ustadz/Ustadzah (honorific titles for teachers). Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, stated that he would be a servant (slave) to anyone who taught him even a single letter; such is the great esteem in which Islam holds the services of a teacher. From an ontological perspective, Islamic education holds that the true reality is Allah, the Almighty, as the One and Only Creator, whilst the universe is Allah’s creation, subject to His laws (sunnatullah).         Epistemologically, Islam possesses a unique and comprehensive perspective. Islam recognises three primary sources of knowledge: (1) Revelation (the Qur’an and Hadith); (2) Reason; and (3) the Senses (empirical evidence). From an axiological perspective, Islamic education is grounded in the universal values of Islam derived from the Qur’an and the Hadith, such as the values of faith (iman), piety (taqwa), justice (‘adl), honesty (sidq), wisdom (hikmah) and compassion (rahmah). The ultimate goal of Islamic education is the formation of the Insan Kamil (the perfect human being), that is, a person who successfully integrates their spiritual, rational and physical dimensions into a single, complete and harmonious whole.

Abstract

This study examined the implementation of TikTok-based cyber-pragmatics instruction and explored students' analytical engagement during the learning process. The study focuses on the integration of digital media into higher education, which has created new opportunities for teaching pragmatics through authentic online communication. Among various social media platforms, TikTok provides abundant examples of naturally occurring discourse that can support students' understanding of language use in digital contexts. Using a descriptive qualitative design, the study involved eight sixth-semester students in the English Education Study Program at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Barat. The data were collected through non-participant classroom observation, field notes, and learning documentation during a 100-minute Semantic-Pragmatics class. During the learning process, the students were required to analyze TikTok videos and comment sections focusing on speech acts, politeness strategies, and conversational implicatures. The results of this study indicated that authentic TikTok discourse encouraged active classroom participation, collaborative discussion, and critical analysis of contextual meaning. Students demonstrated increased awareness of pragmatic phenomena by connecting theoretical concepts with everyday digital communication. Although students initially had difficulty distinguishing conversational implicature from inference and interpreting internet slang, guided discussion helped them develop a deeper understanding of how meaning is constructed in online interaction. This study suggests that TikTok can serve as an effective pedagogical resource for cyber-pragmatics instruction by providing authentic data that enhance students' analytical thinking, pragmatic competence, and digital literacy. These findings contribute to the development of research on the use of digital technology in higher education.

Abstract

The use of English in Indonesian popular songs has become an increasingly visible linguistic phenomenon. English words, phrases, and sentences are frequently combined with Indonesian in song lyrics, particularly in contemporary popular music. This study aims to examine the forms, functions, and social meanings of English use in Indonesian popular songs based on previous studies. This research employs a qualitative approach using a systematic literature review method. Data were obtained from relevant academic studies discussing code switching and code mixing in Indonesian songs. Six studies published between 2019 and 2026 were examined and compared based on their research focus and findings. The results show that English is used in Indonesian popular songs in various forms, including inter sentential switching, intra sentential switching, tag switching, and code mixing. The use of English serves several functions, including expressing emotions, emphasizing particular messages, fulfilling lexical needs, attracting listeners, and expressing group identity. The findings also indicate that English use in Indonesian popular music is closely related to the development of youth culture and global cultural interaction. Therefore, the use of English in Indonesian songs should not simply be viewed as the replacement of Indonesian, but as a dynamic linguistic practice that reflects creativity, identity, and cultural change in contemporary Indonesian society
