Alphabet is an open-access, biannual journal aimed at advancing and disseminating the state-of-the-art knowledge on language, literary and cultural studies. It instills the etymological spirit of the word alphabetos which means learning or lore acquired through reading. Reading, in this context, shall be understood as a process of critically examining or questioning the existing ideas and issues so as to offer alternative answers. In choosing articles for publication, Alphabet prefers manuscripts that present new ideas in the disciplines, originated from empirical, theoretical, and methodological research within both a single discipline and those that sub- or multi-disciplines. It encourages a high standard of scholarship, written in clear and straightforward organization without requiring that authors alter their analytical style and writing voice.

Abstract

This study investigates the complexity of gender and sexual identities portrayed in LGBTQ+ series, 2gether the Series, by applying Stuart Hall’s representation theory. The series is chosen due to its discourses that portray sexual and gender identities. This study is a qualitative research, so this study focuses on the dialogues and discourses. Therefore, gender and sexual identities are investigated to find out how popular culture like 2gether the Series represents them in contemporary media. The result shows that the series challenges the traditional norms regarding sexual identities present in scenes that highlight fluidity, gender roles, and coming out. The researchers also find that several scenes in the series reinforce some of the stereotypes by embracing them in the discourse among the characters. Then, the researchers apply representation theory to analyze the data. This study concludes that gender and sexual identities in 2gether the Series are depicted in a complex manner, challenging traditional norms while also perpetuating certain stereotypes, which highlights the ongoing evolution of perceptions and acceptance in contemporary media.

Abstract

Gender issues are endless issues to be studied. The increasing number of women entering the workforce makes gender issues becoming increasingly interesting to discuss. One of the films that raised the issue of gender in the workplace is The Assistant (2019). This current study aims to analyse the issue of gender oppression experienced by the main female character in the film who works in a male-dominated company, especially those related to cultural imperialism. It uses a qualitative method using dialogue as the main data. These data will be analysed using the theory of the Five Faces of Oppression by Iris M. Young. The results of this study indicate that Jane experiences cultural imperialism which is influenced by the social norms prevailing in patriarchal culture. The cultural imperialism also triggers other forms of oppression which include the marginalization of women, exploitation of labour, and the powerlessness towards male co-workers and superiors. These oppressions occurred because of Jane's status as a woman and her position as an assistant. Jane experiences oppression because social norms and practices governing gender roles in society are also still applied in the workplace. Eventually, this research reveals that tasks that are usually done by women outside of their responsibilities can be categorized as oppression in the form of cultural imperialism which can reinforce oppression in other forms. Therefore, gender awareness is needed to be able to minimize acts of oppression for women in the workplace.

Abstract

This study examines the techniques and ideologies used to translate Indonesian Pusaka songs into the Chinese version. The object of this research is the lyrics of Indonesia Pusaka songs in the Chinese version. This study addresses two main issues, namely: (1) the techniques used in the translation of Indonesia Pusaka songs into Chinese versions and (2) the ideology underlying the translation of Indonesia Pusaka songs into Chinese versions. A descriptive qualitative approach has been adopted in this research. The listen-and-record technique is employed in this research to gather data. . The lyrics of Indonesia Pusaka in Chinese version as the primary source of data for this research. The translation of Chinese- versions of Indonesian Pusaka songs is examined using Molina and Albir translation techniques. From the research conducted, there are 8 song lyrics that all use the Linguistic Amplification translation technique. As for the translation ideology used, it is more inclined to the domestication translation ideology. This domestication translation ideology can be seen from the techniques oriented to the target language, totalling 100%.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the types of directive acts in 2 selected episodes of Nussa Animated Series on the YouTube channel entitled "Nussa: Episode Compilation Vol. 7" and "Nussa: Episode Compilation Vol. 7," also the function of the directive used by each character. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The data source for this research is the episodes of the animated series on the Nussa Official YouTube channel. The data of this study were taken from the language used in the conversations in 2 selected Nussa videos. The research findings show five types of directive acts: command, suggest, invite, request, and advise. There are 23 data classified as a command, 2 data classified as suggesting, 4 data classified as inviting, 6 data classified as requests, and 1 data classified as advising in total; This can indicate that the command is the most used directive action by this talk show speaker. This study also shows that directive speech acts in both episodes contain Islamic values and are in line with Islamic speaking procedures.

Abstract

This study investigates the translation methods and analysis of figurative language in the novel “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho from English to Indonesian. The main theory used to help find the answer in the process is Peter Newmark and Chesterman’s theory, along with other supporting journals. The research method applied is qualitative descriptive. The result showed the writer found 54 syntactic strategy (47 literal translation, 1 calque, 2 phrase structure change, 1 cohesion change, 2 sentence structure change, 1 transposition), 10 semantic strategy (10 synonymy ), and 7 pragmatic strategy (7 explicitness change).

Abstract

This study explores the linguistic landscapes of virtual news articles and aims to determine the websites' choice of language from the linguistic perspective as well as to understand what distinct visual components are highlighted within the websites. This includes how the virtual linguistic landscape of news websites reflects cultural, political, and social ideologies; and examines how linguistic choices and multimodal elements influence the framing of news, the construction of identity, and the negotiation of power dynamics. The data for the study consists of five different international news sites which utilize English as the primary language. The study utilizes principles of Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) and Linguistic Landscape (LL) theory from Pauwels (2012). By understanding how news organizations leverage the virtual linguistic landscape, we gain a deeper understanding of the dynamics that shape our contemporary information landscape and how language and visuals influence public discourse and collective comprehension.
