Abstract

The development of impressions on the Youtube channel contributes to the development of language use both on social media and the wider community, including in expressive speech about taste. Therefore, this study aims to explain the expressive utterances of taste used by Indonesian content creators in culinary review shows on the Youtube channel. This research is descriptive research with a qualitative method. The data source is culinary reviews shown on the Youtube channel from Indonesian content creators with data in the form of expressive utterances about taste. Data analysis was carried out by describing lingual units containing expressive utterances about taste through sociolinguistic studies. Based on the results of the study, the expressive utterances about taste used by Indonesian content creators in culinary review shows on Youtube channels include mantap “perfect”, badabest, nggak ada obat “the best”, seger “fresh”, mantep poll, mantap “yummy”, dabest, parah “heavenly”, bold banget “very bold”, nampol. Gak ngotak “very delicious”, umami, seksi banget “very appetizing”, Ya Allah “Oh Allah”, and gila “crazy” in addition to enak, lezat, sedap, and nikmat “tasty”. Due to the dynamic nature of the language, the creative lingual units used by the community, both online and in conversations outside the network, should be documented to map language development.

Abstract

This paper contends with “Revelationism” which is depicted by Malcolm Turvey in his Doubting Vision. Its thesis is that any effort made by showing scenes on the screen, no matter how helpful or sophisticated the camera in enhancing the vision ability, will only cause the spectators to cling more on the power of Totalitarian Master and therefore the return to subjectivity is importance. In the first part of the paper, I will start by introducing about the act of seeing followed by examining Turvey's Doubting Vision which mainly focuses on Revelationism. In the next part, I will further explore especially part of Turvey's argument related to the contemporary theory, discuss about fantasy of totality, especially body as a totality, and then analyze Alien quadrilogy as the example. In the last part, I will establish the laying foundation of my argument connected with the way Totalitarian Master works and para-identification which basically contend with the revelationism. In the conclusion, I argue that movies rather than reveal something, it functions more like giving the notion that the spectators will never understand wholly. Indeed, it is this feeling of being exploited by Totalitarian Master which then clearly shows the importance to return to subjectivity.

Abstract

Internalized sexism focuses on the forms of sexist behaviour and attitudes conducted by women toward themselves and other women. This article discusses the internalized sexism on TikTok videos tagged with “Pick Me Girl” or the hashtag #PickMeGirl. It can be defined as a social media phenomenon dominated by women who always consider that they are the best in any kind of condition. As they are feeling perfect, they easily hate, insult, and compete with other women. The method used is qualitative. The data was collected by focusing on Pick Me Girl videos on TikTok and giving a critical understanding of the languages the women used in the video. This study was working within the theoretical framework of misogyny by Kate Manne and the concept of internalized sexism. This study aims to explore Pick Me Girl’s sexist behaviors and attitudes and investigate the relationship between women. The results show that Pick Me Girl on TikTok presents the ideas of beauty standard which differ among women, competition between women to get men’s attention, women’s self-objectification, and humiliation toward other women. Although the competition eventually destroys the other women, this characteristic offers pleasure to Pick Me Girl women. Internalized misogyny subsequently leads women to insult other women, hatred other women, and decrease other’s women’s values. Internalized sexism is obviously seen through their actions on social media.

Abstract

An interview is a discourse between the interviewer and the interviewee with the goal of exchanging information. Seen from the perspective of speech act’s theory, one of the functions of an interview is to deliver information from the speaker to the hearer where assertive acts are prominent. However, research on assertive acts to date has devoted little attention to the Islamic discourse. Therefore, this present study discusses assertive acts uttered by the guest speaker talking about her work and experiences as a Muslim living in Australia. This current study collected the data from the transcription of a New South Wales Premier’s Reading Challenge interview with Randa Abdel-Fattah episode. This study applied the descriptive qualitative approach using content analysis in approaching data. In analyzing the data, the researchers were indebted to Searle and Kreidlr, especially on their classifications of assertive acts. The results show seven types of assertive acts noticeable in Randa Abdel-Fattah’s responses to the interview with telling as the most often evident act.

Abstract

This study attempted to reveal the representation of men in a feminist online magazine named Magdalene.co to perform a transparent relationship between language, social practice, and social structure. For the data analysis, I combined the three-dimensional model from Fairclough (2001) and Halliday’s transitivity (2004). Qualitative approach and document analysis were conducted towards the data in the form of articles taken from Gender and Sexuality rubric. This study found out that there are representations portrayed in Magdalene.co, namely: (1) Men are the Victim of Patriarchy, (2) Men are Socially Pressured and Emotionally Stunted, (3) Men do Have Privileges, (4) Men Need Feminism, and (5) Men Should Freely Express Themselves. These representations occurred mostly in form of active-positive clauses containing relational process. The representations also aligned with the editorial point of view in Magdelene.co which adopts advocacy and gender-sensitive journalism. As the result, Magdalene.co in those articles implied their goals to create a new paradigm regarding masculinity. Furthermore, their goal is influenced by third-wave feminism that leads to the idea of male contribution in feminist movements, such as in Aliansi Laki-laki Baru (ALB). In this case, ALB contributed to the representation in Magdalene.co as the magazine portrayed ALB as the best example of men community in the realm of feminism.

Abstract

This paper investigates women's language features and their functions in the speech by Dalia Mogahed, a Muslim woman, at TEDTalks based on Lakoff’s and Pearson's theories. The researchers deal with Dalia's utterances focusing on the women’s language functions in view of speaking ethics in Islam. This study aims (1) to analyze the functions of women’s language features, and (2) to examine their relationship with the Islamic speaking ethics used by Dalia Mogahed. The researchers use a qualitative approach in conducting this study. The findings demonstrate that Dalia applies some women's language features and functions. Her speech contains women’s language features, i.e. lexical hedges, rising intonation on declarative, empty adjectives, intensifiers, hypercorrect grammar, avoidance of strong swear words, and emphatic stress. They are used for the functions of starting a discussion, expressing feelings, and softening utterances in compliance with Islamic speaking ethics. Consistent with the speaker’s characteristics and constrained by the situational contexts, the speech by Delia is sublime, straightforward and uncomplicated, honest and truthful, effective, gentle, and polite. In conclusion, language use is constrained by various contexts including genders, communicative purposes, and personal characteristics.

Abstract

This paper aims to examine the metaphors used in "Awreceh.id" Instagram captions that the researchers considered as funny. Metaphors are often used in everyday life consciously or unconsciously, especially in terms of expressing things to make it funny. Metaphors are not only used in speech but also usually found in many writings in everyday life, such as using metaphors to make captions in Instagram posts. The researchers chose funny metaphors because there are different semantic reasons. Apart from that, other funny metaphors can also be interpreted linguistically for semantic and pragmatic reasons as they depict funny references and would even be funny without the metaphorical medium and a bit of pun. The researchers used a descriptive qualitative method to depict and describe the metaphors contained in the captions of Awreceh.id's Instagram content from January to March as additional elements used to make the content more entertaining. In collecting data, documentation methods and techniques of screenshots, transcripts, and notes were used. Based on the problem, this study examines the use of Lakoff and Johnson's interpretation of the metaphor in the Instagram caption of the amusing account "Awreceh.id." Following a classification of the data by Lakoff and Johnson based on the sort of conceptual metaphor used, a description of the metaphor's intended use is provided. The researchers analyzed the types of conceptual metaphors commonly used in instagram captions by community on millennial awreceh.id account followers based on Lakoff and Johnson's theory of metaphors. In explaining the research results, formal and informal methods were used. According to the analysis's findings, the Instagram captions for the account "Awreceh.id" contained structural metaphors, orientational metaphors, and ontological metaphors. It means that the use of conceptual metaphors in constructing the captions is necessary in terms of making it more entertaining.

Abstract

The American dream is a national ethos that originated in the United States of America and is widely known and believed by people all over the world. In order to create their American dream, particularly the dream of becoming wealthy, traditional American values are required. In the midst of fulfilling one American dream, a person may unknowingly create a paradox by doing things that are believed to be true but are ironically incorrect. The paradox of becoming wealthy can be found in a person's endeavor by following traditional American principles or inside its actual profession by engaging in a criminal action, sometimes known as a crime. The paradox appeared in the movie I Care a Lot by J. Blakeson which tells the story of Marla Grayson, a court-appointed guardian for the elderly who uses her wards as a weapon to achieve her American goal of being wealthy, and Dr. Karen Amos, a physician who sells personal information about her patients in order to get rich. Both committed a crime and transgressed conventional American principles of material prosperity and hard effort.

Abstract

This study focuses on describing the relationships in virtual spaces as a result of the impact of the changes in the pandemic. The changes are in terms of activities carried out by the Student Activity Unit of Matapena of Faculty of Cultural Studies, Universitas Brawijaya (henceforth, FCS UB) in virtual spaces. In this case, there were some adaptations carried out by the organization. By applying a theory by Marvin Harris about Cultural Materialism, this study revealed the mode of production in the form of changes that affect the social structure. In addition, the changes also influenced the community consumers in cultural materialism. By using an ethnographic method, it observed their adaptation process. The results of this study showed that there was a process of changing cultural ethics during virtual performing art activities and there were various kinds of adaptations made to certain conditions. Moreover, material needs during the activities were also tailored to the conditions at the time of crisis. Despite these changes, they did not remove the essence of the events in the virtual spaces.

Abstract

Sophie Anderson’s The House with Chicken Legs is a children’s novel which has distinctive character development and a story archetype. The combination of those aspects is interesting to study. Hence, this paper aims to explain the main character’s development which is analyzed in the framework of one of Christopher Booker’s the seven basic plots theory, namely voyage and return. The result of the study reveals that the voyage and return story archetype employed in The House with Chicken Legs has shaped the development of the main character of the novel, Marinka. Marinka’s character has changed from being selfish and ignorant to becoming more appreciative, selfless, and open-minded. Based on the result, I suggest future researchers use the seven basic plots theory to determine intrinsic elements in novels which belong to the scope of children literature
