Abstract

This study analyzes the role of digital literacy in revitalizing the Perang Tomat (Tomato War) tradition in Cikareumbi Village during the post-pandemic period. The program employed a Participatory Action Research (PAR) methodology, engaging artists, youth, and community elders in training on digital content related to cultural branding and creative media production. Participants were trained to create cultural content with smartphones, manage social media accounts, and reinterpret digital platforms as instruments for cultural representation. Empirical evidence indicates notable enhancements in the digital capacity of the community. The Instagram insights for the newly established “Mekar Budaya Lembang” account indicate 3,299 views and 128 interactions over the course of one month, with 61.3% of viewers classified as non-followers. Furthermore, 85% of participants demonstrated proficiency in content creation, 78% acquired skills for independent media management, and 60% grasped the principles of cultural branding. The findings indicate that digital literacy enables individuals to narrate stories within their communities and enhances the visibility of Perang Tomat beyond its local context. The study concludes that digital literacy serves as both a technical skill and a cultural strategy, enhancing community agency and promoting cultural sustainability. This model of community-based digital empowerment provides a replicable framework for the promotion of intangible heritage in digitally mediated contexts.

Abstract

The Rindu Suara Adzan 2024 religious-comedy soap opera depicts quotidian socioeconomic realities infused with Islamic principles, including humor and elements of contemporary culture. This article offers an autoethnographic reflection on the author's experience portraying "Mas Sugeng," utilizing Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic framework to analyze the visual and symbolic portrayal of da’wah. This study used a qualitative narrative approach to analyze four situations that illustrate the home, economic, and emotional aspects of masculinity within urban Indonesian society. The findings indicate that da’wah in religious meditation and television dramas functions not by verbal preaching but through nuanced emotional connection, humor, and approachable moral exemplars. The analysis illustrates how Sugeng’s gestures, objects, and silences represent inclusive Islamic messages, so converting entertainment into a participatory modality of popular da’wah. This study enhances comprehension of media Islamization, emotional piety, and cultural communication in postmodern Indonesia, positioning autoethnography as both a method and a performance within visual culture research.

Abstract

The Learning with Maestro (BBM) Program, initiated by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, seeks to enhance art appreciation and cultivate student character through engagement with six art maestros: Ki Purbo Asmoro (dalang), Nasirun (painting), Sundari Soekotjo (music), Iman Soleh (theater), Gus TF Sakai (literature), and Didik Nini Thowok (dance). The BBM Theater Arts Program took place at Celah Celah Langit (CCL) in Bandung, with participants from eight distinct regions: Kupang, Bali, Aceh, Jambi, West Java, Banten, Yogyakarta, and Makassar. The objective of the study is to analyze Charles Sanders Peirce's triadic idea as it pertains to the Bahtera text, emphasizing representamen, object, and interpretant. This research employs a descriptive qualitative methodology, utilizing data collection approaches such as observation, interviews, and document analysis. This study yielded five principal findings: the symbol of co-existence, plurality index, ecological icon, symbol of materiality, and symbol of transcendence. The study concludes that the Bahtera script functions as a communal semiosis capable of fostering social, ecological, and transcendent consciousness through symbolic dramatic signs. Interviews were systematically executed by devising research instruments comprising questions pertinent to the research subjects. The researchers interviewed a participant in the BBM program who was intimately engaged in the scriptwriting process. The interview is semi-structured, designed to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the script's development background and the creative dynamics between the participants and the theater maestro in interpreting the script's symbolism.

Abstract

This article explores the role of regional arts, particularly Bas traditional music, in supporting student character development through the application of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL). The study examines character-related values embedded in Bas musical practices and considers how these values can be integrated into learning activities. A qualitative approach with descriptive analysis was employed to interpret the educational potential of Bas traditional music within curricular contexts. The findings indicate that Bas music contains values associated with discipline, cooperation, responsibility, and appreciation of local culture. Within the CTL framework, these values appear to be engaged through contextual and experience-based learning processes in art practice. Learning activities such as project-based work, group discussion, and reflective exercises emerged as approaches that supported students’ engagement with character-related values. These findings suggest that the integration of Bas traditional music into CTL-based learning offers opportunities to connect character education with local cultural knowledge within educational settings.

Abstract

This study explores the contribution of video mapping technology and the use of non-conventional performance spaces in generating hybrid theatrical experiences in Enda Walsh’s Disco Pig, staged at the Brotherhood Bunker, Bandung. This production provides a significant case for examining the intersection of technology, spatial change and audience engagement as digital media gains a greater foothold in live performance in contemporary theatre. Data were collected through performance observation, visual documentation, and analysis of dramaturgical elements within a qualitative phenomenological approach. The results show that video mapping is not only a visual enhancement, but also a dramaturgical device that constructs memory, psychological landscapes and narrative transitions. In addition, transforming a nightclub basement into a performing space produces a hybrid spatiality that conflates entertainment, social interaction, and theatrical representation. The production also engages with broader concerns of urban identity, class relations, and spatial politics in contemporary digital culture. This study adds to theatre and performance studies by showing how digital technologies can extend dramaturgical practices and generate immersive experiences for the spectator in alternative performance settings. The findings provide theoretical insights into hybrid theatre and practical implications for artists and directors exploring digitally mediated performance.

Abstract

The development of Indonesian horror films over the past decade demonstrates a strong tendency toward the use of visual props as constructors of atmosphere and meaning. The film Rambut Kafan consistently employs long hair, burial shrouds, and ritual objects as key horror signs. This study aims to analyze the semiotic meanings of horror props in Rambut Kafan using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic approach and to explore their potential as inspiration for theatrical artistic creation. The novelty of this research lies in mapping the system of horror prop signs from film into the context of artistic transformation in theater, rather than merely interpreting visual meanings within the film medium. This qualitative research analyzes selected scenes that prominently feature the main horror props. The findings indicate that these props function as icons, indices, and symbols representing death, trauma, and culturally liminal spaces. The practical implications of this study suggest that horror props from film can be transformed into metaphorical, immersive, and multisensory theatrical elements, thereby enriching visual creation strategies in contemporary theater practice.

Abstract

This community service project aimed to enhance the competitiveness of Jelekong Village painters through the application of Islamic decorative motifs in painting production. The program was based on the concept of Islamic decorative art, which emphasizes calligraphy, geometric patterns, and floral ornamentation as visual expressions of Islamic values. The study employed a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach involving local painters in Jelekong Village, Bandung Regency. Data were collected through observation, interviews, training activities, and participant evaluation. The implementation consisted of five stages: knowing, understanding, planning, action, and reflection (KUPAR). The results indicated that participants improved their understanding of Islamic decorative motifs, acquired new skills in producing Islamic-themed paintings, and increased their ability to utilize digital marketing platforms. The introduction of graphic reproduction techniques and digital promotion strategies also improved production efficiency and expanded market opportunities among Muslim consumers. The program contributed to product diversification and strengthened the creative economy of the Jelekong painting community.

Abstract

Modern batik has evolved beyond its traditional role as decorative textile art and increasingly functions as a medium for cultural reflection and social expression. Previous studies have largely examined batik from aesthetic, historical, and cultural preservation perspectives, while limited attention has been given to its potential as a visual response to contemporary social issues, particularly legal inequality in Indonesia. Addressing this gap, this study aims to analyze the creative process and symbolic meanings embedded in the “Justicia” batik design as a representation of legal disparity in Indonesia. This study employed a qualitative practice-based research approach using Gustami’s artistic creation framework, consisting of exploration, design development, and realization stages. The research process involved identifying issues of legal inequality, collecting visual and textual references, interpreting legal and cultural symbols, and developing motifs and color compositions, while semiotic and visual culture perspectives were applied to interpret the meanings represented in the final work. The findings indicate that the “Justicia” motif reinterprets traditional batik aesthetics into a form of social commentary through symbolic visual elements, including scales of justice, a distorted blade, Javanese script reading "Dewi Zalim" (Tyrannical Goddess), and geometric adaptations of the Slobok motif, which collectively represent unequal law enforcement, structural injustice, and social contradiction. This study demonstrates that contemporary batik can extend its function beyond cultural preservation into a medium of social education and critical reflection and recommends broader exploration of practice-based batik creation as an approach for engaging contemporary societal issues through local cultural expression.

Abstract

Previous studies on Jangjawokan have primarily examined it as a form of mantra, with limited attention to its role as a cultural knowledge system that reflects broader social and cosmological dynamics. This article examines three texts of Jangjawokan paranti melet to explore their internal logic, triadic structure, and mechanisms of cultural adaptation. The study aims to explain how these textual features reflect Tritangtu cosmology and illustrate processes of cultural osmosis within Sundanese tradition. A qualitative-interpretative method with a hermeneutic approach was employed by drawing on Clifford Geertz’s concept of thick description, Jakob Sumardjo’s Tritangtu cosmology, and Denys Lombard’s theory of cultural osmosis. The results indicate that Jangjawokan serves not only as a ritual expression but also as a symbolic system through which intentions and emotional relationships are conveyed within a cosmological context. The identified triadic structure, consisting of invocation, personification, and affirmation, reflects Tritangtu principles while indicating processes of cultural osmosis through the absorption and reinterpretation of pre-Hindu, Hindu-Buddhist, and Islamic elements. This study contributes to extending the interpretation of Jangjawokan beyond textual ritual practices toward understanding it as a dynamic cultural knowledge system and suggests further ethnographic and comparative exploration of related oral traditions.

Abstract

Children’s picture books provide young readers with stories and visual environments that shape their early reading experiences. In recent years, the use of pastel colour palettes has become more visible in the illustration of Indonesian children’s books, particularly those that are targeted at early childhood audiences. This study investigates the use of pastel colour in selected picture books published by Pelangi Indonesia and discusses its visual characteristics based on colour theory and visual psychology. The analysis is based on a qualitative descriptive approach in the field of visual communication design (VCD) and discusses the colour relationships, contrast, composition and layout organization. The results show that pastel colours are always accompanied by balanced compositions and moderate visual contrasts, in order to create illustrations that emphasise visual softness and harmony. From the visual psychology perspective, these features might be helpful to build a more comfortable and calm reading environment for the children aged 4-6 years. The study shows that pastel-based illustration design is a beneficial approach to developing visually supportive learning materials. It is a contribution to the ongoing discussion of the use of colour in early childhood visual communication.
