Abstract

Low Learning Outcomes and Student Learning Motivation in the Pre-Cycle of Exponent Properties Material: The Importance of Teachers' Role in Addressing the IssueThe low learning outcomes and student learning motivation in the pre-cycle of exponent properties material are crucial roles for teachers to address. One of the causes of this problem is the conventional teaching method. This study is a solution to this issue, using the Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) approach with a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model. The research aims to enhance student motivation and learning outcomes in mathematics for the exponent properties material through CRT in a PBL model. The research method is Collaborative Classroom Action Research (PTKK) conducted over two cycles. Each cycle consists of two meetings and four stages: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The subjects of this study are 30 students from class VIII C of SMP Negeri 6 Salatiga during the first semester of the 2024/2025 academic year. The data collection techniques used in this study include questionnaires and tests. The results show that more than 50% of the students have achieved high learning motivation. The learning outcomes also improved, with a 40% classical learning achievement in the first cycle increasing to 80% in the second cycle. Thus, learning with the CRT approach in a PBL model can enhance student motivation and learning outcomes in mathematics for class VIII C of SMP Negeri 6 Salatiga.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and evaluate bilingual (Indonesia-Malay) mathematics comics designed to increase the learning interest of Indonesia students in Malaysia. Using a Research and Development (R&D) approach with the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model, this study involved 7 students from the Indonesian Community Centre (ICC) in Muar, Johor. The effectiveness of bilingual comics was evaluated through measuring students' interest before and after the intervention using a Likert scale questionnaire. The validity of the comic content was assessed using Aiken's V, then the results showed that all aspects of the comic (material, media, and language) had good validity with an Aiken's V value > 0.70. The data were analyzed for normality and homogeneity, followed by a paired t-test to compare the pre test and post-test scores. The results showed that the use of bilingual comics significantly increased students' interest in learning, with a t-statistical value of 5.227, p = 0.002, and Cohen's d of -1.976, indicating a large measure of effect. These findings show that bilingual math comics can increase students' interest in learning mathematics.

Abstract

This study aims to explore students' epistemological obstacles in learning geometry by considering gender factors and mathematical resilience. This research uses the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method. The literature search process was carried out through systematic stages using four main databases: Google Scholar, SINTA, Scopus, and ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center). The literature search strategy was designed comprehensively by using a combination of specific keywords namely epistemological obstacles, geometry learning, mathematical resilience, gender differences, epistemological obstacles, geometry learning, mathematical resilience, and gender. The articles collected were those whose publication period spanned from 2015 to 2023. From the various articles, 25 articles were selected by researchers that were closely related to the keywords used. The article selection process was carried out through four main stages following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) protocol. In this study, it has been identified that students' epistemological barriers in learning geometry are strongly influenced by gender and mathematical resilience factors. Female students tend to show better mathematical communication skills, while male students often face challenges in following the steps of problem solving. In addition, mathematical resilience plays an important role in students' ability to overcome the difficulties they face. Students with high resilience are more able to persevere and try despite challenges, while students with low resilience tend to feel hopeless. Keywords: Epistemological Obstacles, Gender, Mathematical Resilience, Geometry Learning, Systematic Literature Review.

Abstract

Mathematics learning requires students to be able to master various mathematical abilities. Mastery of these mathematical abilities aims to make it easier for students to receive information during learning. mathematics as language, which means that mathematics can be used in communication between students. In this case, mathematical communication skills must be possessed by students, in order to make it easier for them to solve math problems. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of mathematical communication skills on the material of linear equations of three variables. The approach used is descriptive qualitative. The instruments used were mathematical communication skills questions, and interview guidelines. Researchers used triangulation techniques to strengthen the data obtained. The data that has been obtained is analyzed using the Miles and Hubermen method, which has four stages. The results of this study are that students who have low mathematical communication skills tend to master only one indicator of mathematical communication skills. Learners who have moderate mathematical communication skills tend to master two indicators of mathematical communication skills. Learners who have high mathematical communication skills, tend to have mastered all indicators of mathematical communication skills. Suggestions from this study are, that further researchers try to do research on mathematical communication skills.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the role of prospective mathematics teacher students in planning actions according to the components of decision-making in the context of classroom learning. The type of research carried out was a case study with the research subjects being prospective mathematics teacher students from the Tadris Mathematics Study Program, Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah State Islamic University Tulungagung, who were carrying out internship courses in the education unit at SMPN 1 Sumber Gempol Tulungagung. In planning the action, the subject involves three main processes in providing an instructional explanation of straight-line equation material. In idea-generation activities, the subject collects information in the form of relevant ideas for developing alternatives. In clarifying ideas, the subject analyzes the ideas by breaking down the information into categories for each main idea produced. Ideas regarding students' ability to master concepts, for example, are divided into initial and new concepts, and then grouped into high, medium, and low ability categories. In assessing the reasonableness of an idea, the subject analyzes and evaluates the various idea information generated, then synthesizes it to decide on selecting actions to achieve goals. In this process, the subject focuses on two sub-materials to study: the drawing process and constructing formulas.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the STEM-based Gallery Walk learning model on improving students' mathematical reasoning at MTs NU Al-Hidayah Kudus. The method used was a pseudo-experiment with a Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. Cluster random sampling was applied in sample selection, where class VII B was the experimental class and class VII A was the control class. The research instrument was in the form of description questions based on mathematical reasoning indicators, and had been tested for validity, difficulty level, distinguishing power and reliability. Data analysis used binomial testing, Mann-Whitney U, and N-Gain calculation. As a result, the experimental class achieved classical completeness of 86%, more than the set limit of completeness (75%). The Mann-Whitney U test showed that the average value of mathematical reasoning improvement of the experimental class was more than the average value of mathematical reasoning improvement of the control class. The N-Gain calculation shows an increase of 76.5% which is categorized as effective. This means that the STEM-based Gallery Walk learning model is proven effective in improving students' mathematical reasoning skills. Thus, this model can be recommended as an alternative innovative teaching strategy to improve mathematical thinking skills.
