Abstract

This research aims to explain the description of the ideology of state ibuism in the novel Ulid Tak Ingin ke Malaysia by Mahfud Ikhwan and how the narrative of resistance to it is through the depiction of female characters in the novel. This research uses qualitative and descriptive methods. The results of the research show that the hegemony of the ideology of state ibuism in the novel is represented through the character of Kaswati who plays the role of a good wife and mother in taking care of her husband and children. The resistance to the hegemony of state ibuism represented through the figures of Kaswati, Juwairiyah, and the women of Lerok village. The symbol of resistance carried out by Kaswati and the Lerok women is to leave their main duties as mothers and wives to work in Malaysia. However, behind the narrative of resistance, there is a narrative to return to the ideological symbol that is perceived by the opponents which is marked by the desire of female figures to return to the integrity of the family.

Abstract

This study aims to compare the story of Princess Merida in the film Brave and Princess Mandalika from the book Cerita Rakyat Putri Mandalika Sebuah Legenda dari Tanah Bumi Gora. Both characters are noble princesses who experience similar fates and conflicts but choose different paths to resolve their dilemmas. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a comparative literature approach. The findings reveal several similarities and differences in the narratives of Princess Merida and Princess Mandalika. These similarities and differences can be seen in the characterization, plot, as well as the settings of time and place. Moreover, the values conveyed in both stories also reflect comparable and contrasting elements.

Abstract

Pluricultural competence is a critical component in teaching Indonesian as a Foreign Language (BIPA), particularly within the context of intercultural communication, as reflected in the practice of basa-basi (Indonesian small talk). However, the representation of this competence in formal BIPA assessment has received limited critical attention. This study aims to evaluate the visibility of pluricultural competence through the representation of basa-basi in assessment tasks found in government-issued BIPA textbooks. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach and Fairclough’s model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the study analyzes seven official BIPA textbooks from Levels 1 and 2, with a focus on assessment sections. The findings reveal that the representation of basa-basi remains limited and fails to capture the complexity of Indonesian sociocultural interaction. Assessment items tend to prioritize structural aspects of language while overlooking pragmatic and cultural dimensions. The study concludes that insufficient attention to pluricultural competence in assessment may hinder BIPA learners from achieving full communicative competence. It recommends the explicit integration of basa-basi elements and pragmatic evaluation criteria in BIPA assessments as a step toward strengthening a culturally responsive language teaching approach.

Abstract

This research is a qualitative descriptive study examined through literary ecocriticism which aims to: Explain the form of environmental phenomena in the novel Dalam Peluhan Rahim Tanah, Wanita Bermata Gurita by Jemmy Piran; Explain the value of environmental education in reducing environmental damage. The data of this research are words, phrases, clauses, sentences, both narrative and conversational based on the form of environmental phenomena and the value of environmental education. The data source is the novel Dalam Peluhan Rahim Tanah by Jemmy Piran. The data collection techniques used are reading techniques, note-taking techniques, and documentation techniques. Data analysis techniques are carried out by data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions/verification. The results of the study show that: The representation of the form of environmental phenomena in the novel Dalam Peluhan Rahim Tanah by Jemmy Piran contains pollution, wilderness, disasters, housing/residence, animals and the earth. The representation of environmental education values includes respect for nature, responsibility, compassion and care, cosmic solidarity, not harming nature, simple and harmonious living, justice, democracy, and moral integration.

Abstract

Studies on sexual violence in Indonesian literature are still limited to the socio-cultural aspects, while the representation of the psychological impact on child victims has not been widely examined. This article fills this gap by analyzing the short story Azul Maya by Laksmi Pamuntjak from the anthology Kitab Kawin, with a focus on the trauma of child victims of incest. This research is limited to one short story to explore the complexity of the main character's psychological experience. Using a literary psychology approach, descriptive qualitative method, and thematic analysis, the research found trauma symptoms in the form of anger, anxiety, fear, and depression reflected in emotional changes, withdrawn behavior, eating disorders, and dissociation. This representation reveals trauma as a structural impact of sexual violence in a patriarchal system. The findings affirm the function of literature as an aesthetic medium as well as social critique, and expand the interdisciplinary contributions between literature and psychology.

Abstract

This study explores the BIPA (Indonesian language for non-native speakers) inclusivity in higher education, focusing on writing classes and skills through the perspective of Intercultural Communication Competence (ICC). The study, moreover, highlights the importance of acknowledging and valuing diversity in the BIPA learning class to create a supportive classroom climate for international students. Additionally, this situation can help them express themselves freely and confidently while learning Indonesian. The research depicts various teaching strategies that can be implemented during writing class, such as collaborative writing, peer review, and relevant themes categorisation groups, to learn different learning styles and cultures. Research methodology employs qualitative method by conducting semi-structured interviews to four lecturers who teach writing classes. The findings of this study are intercultural knowledge and skills, attitudes, and critical cultural awareness from BIPA lecturer perspectives in the writing class using ICC play pivotal roles. The recommendation from this research is that lecturers need to integrate ICC into their teaching practices for every language skill because it can promote a more inclusive educational environment. However, further research is required to ensure the effectiveness of ICC in other language skills.

Abstract

This study explores the representation of female resistance to arranged marriage in contemporary Madurese song lyrics. The analysis focuses on three songs: Benni Peleyan Bula (2014) by Yuli Asiska, Mateh Rassa (2022), and Mile Reng Towah (2024) by Ahmed Habsy. Using a qualitative approach with ethnofeminism and literary futurology as analytical frameworks, the findings reveal that resistance does not always appear as direct defiance but is expressed through forms such as active resignation, emotional disappointment, and reflective awareness. These expressions signify a shift in cultural values and the emergence of new social imaginaries within Madurese society. Song lyrics serve not only as entertainment but also as symbolic spaces where women negotiate identity, express dissent, and envision a more gender-equitable future. Through emotional narratives, these songs project alternative cultural futures where women possess greater autonomy in choosing their life partners and defining their own happiness.

Abstract

This study examines the evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI) in digital communication from a psycholinguistic and pragmatic perspective. Rather than functioning solely as a technical tool, AI has increasingly assumed the role of an interactive social entity capable of engaging in complex conversational exchanges. By simulating affective responses, employing politeness strategies, and adapting to users’ emotional and social contexts, AI fosters communication environments perceived as safe, particularly among the digital-native generations. These environments often relax rigid social norms such as fear of impoliteness or judgment, enabling deeper emotional expression. Employing a qualitative methodology grounded in literature review and observation of user interactions with Large Language Models (LLMs) based on platforms like ChatGPT. However, this research adopts a constructivist paradigm to examine how users co-construct meaning. Findings indicate that AI through technologies such as Natural Language Processing (NLP), affective computing, and relational artifact design facilitates perceptions of social presence, emotional alignment, and self-disclosure. This signifies a shift from traditional interpersonal communication to linguistically mediated digital interaction. However, the engagement remains a simulation for AI that lacks genuine intentionality or social consciousness and still struggles with implicit elements like metaphor or irony. The study concludes by advocating for interdisciplinary approaches to assess AI’s epistemic and affective roles in shaping social relationships and to critically reconsider concepts such as authenticity, artificial affect, and human subjectivity in the digital era.

Abstract

This study aims to develop multimodal digital teaching materials for short story learning that incorporate elements of local and global wisdom for grade XI students at the Islamic Senior High School (MA). This research is a type of Research and Development (R&D). The development method used is Design and Development Research (DDR), which has been adapted to the scope of the study into two stages: the preliminary stage and the design stage. The study was conducted at MA Al-Huda Sumber Nangka. The data were obtained from interviews with the Indonesian language teacher and student questionnaires to determine the students’ needs and learning characteristics. The results of the exploration stage revealed that the teaching materials used by the teacher were printed textbooks. The student questionnaires showed a lack of interest in short story learning, despite the students’ diverse learning characteristics. The design stage involved developing multimodal teaching materials consisting of text, illustrated text, audiovisual content, gamification and flipbook. Elements of local and global wisdom were integrated into the short story examples, such as works by Seno Gumira Ajidarma and Raditya Dika.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui Pandangan Masyarakat Sasak terhadap Pamali, Realisasi Kata-Kata Pamali dalam Kebudayaan Masyarakat Sasak sebagai ungkapan dan penggunaan dalam pronomina bentuk klitik, serta Nilai-Nilai Kultural Kata-Kata Pamali untuk resolusi konflik. Kajian ini bertumpu pada teori linguistik antropologi dan etnografi komunikasi. Data dalam penelitian dikumpulkan dengan menerapkan metode observasi partisipan dan wawancara mendalam dengan teknik catat dan rekam. Data dianalisis dengan menerapkan dua metode sekaligus, yakni model analisis Miles dan Haberman (data collection, data reduction, data display, dan conclusion) dan model analisis Spradley. Hasil analisis memperlihatkan bahwa pamali dipandang oleh masyarakat Sasak sebagai suatu norma yang apabila ditegakkan dapat menciptakan kedamaian dan ketenteraman hidup, sebaliknya apabila dilanggar dapat menyebabkan dehumanisasi. Kata pamali yang dipraktikkan masyarakat Sasak dalam bentuk sapaan, yang penggunaannya pada klitik meliputi klitik ku, pe, da, ta, a, nya. Prinsip hidup yang tertuang dalam pamali merupakan ideologi yang dikemas dalam sebuah ungkapan “onyaq basa, onyaq cara, onyaq tan, onyaq pendait-lengѐ basa, lengѐ cara, lengѐ tan, lengѐ pendait ‘perkataan, tingkah laku, dan perbuatan yang baik akan membawa kebaikan begitupun sebaliknya akan membawa malapetaka.
