Abstract

Studies on sexual violence in Indonesian literature are still limited to the socio-cultural aspects, while the representation of the psychological impact on child victims has not been widely examined. This article fills this gap by analyzing the short story Azul Maya by Laksmi Pamuntjak from the anthology Kitab Kawin, with a focus on the trauma of child victims of incest. This research is limited to one short story to explore the complexity of the main character's psychological experience. Using a literary psychology approach, descriptive qualitative method, and thematic analysis, the research found trauma symptoms in the form of anger, anxiety, fear, and depression reflected in emotional changes, withdrawn behavior, eating disorders, and dissociation. This representation reveals trauma as a structural impact of sexual violence in a patriarchal system. The findings affirm the function of literature as an aesthetic medium as well as social critique, and expand the interdisciplinary contributions between literature and psychology.

Abstract

Mantras in the Malay oral tradition function not only as a means of traditional medicine but also as a medium of religious communication that transmits Islamic values through local cultural symbols. This study aims to analyze how Melawi Malay medicine mantras function as a medium of religious communication in conveying religious messages to the community. The study employed a qualitative-descriptive approach through text analysis and cultural interpretation of six traditional medicine mantras of the Melawi Malay community in West Kalimantan. The analysis was conducted using Paul Ricoeur’s cultural hermeneutics, Bronislaw Malinowski’s anthropological approach, and the perspective of cultural communication to understand the relationship among ritual language, local symbols, and religious messages within the mantras. Data were collected through interviews, observation, recordings of mantra recitations, and transcription using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). The findings indicate that the mantras contain strong elements of religious communication through the use of declarations of tawhid, the mention of Allah, the Prophet Muhammad, and religious prayers integrated with natural symbols, local cosmology, traditional magical elements, and relationships between humans and nature. These findings demonstrate that mantras function not only as a medium of healing but also as a medium of religious communication that enables Islamic values to be communicated and internalized through local cultural structures that already possess social legitimacy within the community. This study contributes to the development of religious communication and cultural communication studies by demonstrating that oral traditions can serve as a medium for conveying religious messages within traditional societies.

Abstract

The Dayak Iban wedding mantra in the Sampi Melah Pinang ritual constitutes a ritual communication practice that constructs cultural meanings concerning married life through metaphorical language. This study analyzes the conceptual metaphors contained in the mantra and examines their functions within the communication context of the wedding ritual. The data, consisting of mantra texts, were obtained from ritual speech events in Kapuas Hulu Regency, West Kalimantan, through observation, in-depth interviews, documentation, and transcription. The analysis was conducted through the identification of metaphorical expressions based on lexical meanings, the mapping of concrete experiences onto abstract concepts, and interpretation within the situational context of ritual communication. The findings identified ten metaphorical expressions organized into eight categories of conceptual metaphors, namely Bonding Metaphor, Protection Metaphor, Journey Metaphor, Life Direction and Control Metaphor, Harmony Metaphor, Family Renewal Metaphor, Social Legitimization Metaphor, and Holistic Well-Being Metaphor. The findings indicate that concrete experiences such as binding, fencing, journeys, direction, physical conditions, kinship, and health are systematically projected onto the abstract concept of married life. Within the ritual context, the mantra is delivered in a sacred setting by a customary leader to the bride and groom, their families, and the community as a medium for invoking blessings and social legitimization through ritual language that reinforces cultural values. Thus, the mantra functions as a collective conceptual construction that represents the way the Dayak Iban community understands and organizes married life.

Abstract

Academic writing is a critical competency in higher education, yet many university students struggle to produce coherent and academically rigorous written work. This challenge is particularly pronounced in Indonesian higher education, where metacognitive writing strategy instruction remains empirically underexplored. This study aimed to analyze the use of metacognitive strategies among university students and examine their relationship with academic writing effectiveness in the Indonesian Language General Compulsory Course (MKWK Bahasa Indonesia) at Tanjungpura University (UNTAN), Indonesia. Deploying a quantitative survey design, data were gathered from a heterogeneous sample of undergraduate students across multiple faculties, including Law, Early Childhood Teacher Education (PAUD), Guidance and Counseling (BK), and Agriculture. Metacognitive strategies were operationalized through planning, monitoring, and evaluation components, while writing effectiveness was measured across five dimensions: structure, coherence, language accuracy, argumentative strength, and reference completeness. Data were analyzed using non-parametric statistics via Spearman's rank correlation. Results indicated that students'reported metacognitive strategy usage was at a moderate level, with mean scores surpassing the theoretical midpoint. A significant and strong positive correlation was found between metacognitive strategy use and self-perceived academic writing effectiveness (r= 0.7551, p< 0.000001). Descriptively, planning and monitoring dimensions displayed a stronger association with writing quality compared to the evaluation phase. The simple linear regression model revealed that metacognitive strategies shared 61.79% of the variance with perceived writing effectiveness, leaving the remaining variance linked to unmeasured individual and environmental factors. These findings suggest that the strategic integration of metacognitive scaffolding into writing curricula is highly relevant for fostering scholarly writing competence within linguistically and academically diverse higher education contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms and meanings of local color in the novel Kidung di Tampun Juah by Liu Ban Fo through a literary anthropology approach. The method used is descriptive qualitative with an interpretative approach. Data were collected through documentation techniques, including close reading, note-taking, and coding. The data consist of textual excerpts containing elements of Dayak Iban Desa culture in West Kalimantan, with 17 excerpts selected purposively from a total of 35 initial data. Data analysis employed the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results show that local color in the novel is represented through seven cultural elements, namely the belief system, social system, knowledge system, language, arts, livelihood, and material culture. The novelty of this study lies in its analytical approach, which examines local color as an integrated and interconnected cultural system rather than as separate values. By applying Koentjaraningrat’s framework of seven cultural elements, this study provides a more comprehensive analysis in revealing the interrelationships among cultural elements within literary texts. In addition, this study introduces a relatively under-researched object, thereby contributing to the development of culture-based literary studies as well as the preservation of Dayak local culture through literature. Furthermore, the findings of this study can be utilized as teaching materials in literature learning to strengthen students’ understanding of local wisdom and Indonesia’s cultural diversity. The novel is also relevant for use in Grade 12 senior high school literature learning under the Merdeka Curriculum, particularly in Phase F learning outcomes related to the analysis of character, plot, and social context in prose works.
