Abstract

This study tests the hypothesis that livelihood diversification mitigates vulnerability to climate shocks among rural households in Kenya. The study is based on two waves of nationally-representative household survey data collected in 2005/06 and 2015/16. A measure of livelihood diversification in the sampled households was computed using Simpson Diversity Index. Comparison of means and correlation analysis was used to test the study’s hypothesis on a sample of 8,483 and 12,217 rural households in 2005/06 and 2015/16 respectively. Consistent with the study’s hypothesis, results indicate lower mean values of livelihood diversification indices for rural households that reported loss in welfare due to climate shocks compared to those that reported no adverse effects in both 2005/06 and 2015/16. Correlation analysis results indicate an inverse relationship between livelihood diversification and vulnerability to climate shocks for all sampled households. Distinctive and nuanced differences in results were found when analysis was disaggregated along income classes and agro-ecological zones. Sensitivity analysis confirmed robustness of the results. Based on these results, it is recommended that rural households be supported to pursue a diverse portfolio of income generating activities and assets in order to build resilience against climate shocks.

Abstract

The purpose of the conduct of this study was to identify the leadership styles of the school heads in implementing school-based management. Likewise, it also aimed to determine the relationship between the leadership styles of the principals and its current SBM level of practice. The study was undertaken in eleven (11) public secondary schools in Mandaluyong City with fifty-five (55) teacher-respondents who are members of their respective SBM team. The mixed method design was used in the study. Correlational method of research was used to determine the relationship between the leadership styles and the corresponding current SBM level of practice. Survey questionnaire was utilized to identify the perceived leadership styles demonstrated by the principals in implementing SBM. An interview through focus group discussion was conducted to determine how leadership styles of the school heads affect the implementation of school-based management. As revealed in the results of the study, most of the members of the SBM team in each school perceived that Transformational leadership, Transactional leadership, Strategic leadership, and Democratic leadership are the frequently leadership styles employed by the principals in the implementation of the school-based management.  Likewise, since the computed value 22.00 using the chi-square test is greater than the tabular value 18. 307 at 0.05 alpha and 10 degrees of freedom, the null hypothesis was rejected and concludes that there is a significant relationship between the principals’ leadership style and the status of the SBM level of practice. Most of the participants of the study perceived that leadership styles of the principals directly affect the performance of the whole team in achieving the status of SBM level of practice. A school head with a strong leadership would mean significant and better results as to compare to a school head who most of the time delegated the tasks directly to his team.

Abstract

In any developing economy, Foreign Exchange Policy Regime FEPR play a critical role in the viability of all sectors of the economy. In Nigeria, the economy is highly dependent on foreign inputs from contracting services, technology, materials, expatriates, etc. Therefore, this study investigated the impact of FEPR on the performance of the Nigerian Construction Sector NCS. To achieve this goal, time series data was extracted from the United Nations Statistic Department UNSD on the NCS, Gross Domestic Product GDP and FEPR for 50 years spanning from 1970 to 2019. The study uses econometric approach including tests of stationarity and co-integration as well as the Generalized Method of Moment GMM to model the relationships between the variables. The study reveals that the 1986 FEPR reform had significant and negative effect on the Nigerian Construction Sector output. This implies that the performance of the construction sector is more dependent on the state of the economy and government policy. Hence, this study recommends urgent diversification of the foreign exchange earnings to moderate the effects of external shocks from oil exports and eliminate misalignment of appropriate FEPR. Finally, government should implement policy on construction local content development to reduce the effect of FER volatility on the NCS.

Abstract

The relationship between fiscal policy and economic growth has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years. The growth experience of several countries during the last decades has generated a growing strand of theoretical and empirical literature trying to explain these events. Although one could argue that economic growth and fiscal policy influence each other. The aim of this paper is to review the research work conducted on fiscal policies and economic growth, noting that there are three tools of fiscal policy; the first type is spending, the second type is taxation, and the third type is debts. In addition, according to previous research, the relationship between fiscal policy and economic growth is not clear and consistent, where in some cases a positive relationship, while in others it may be a negative relationship. In this paper, we will discuss the concept of fiscal policies, economic growth, and the relationship between those two variables through some of the previous research.

Abstract

This paper explored the conceptualisation and research gaps in the field of tourism infrastructure. Key objective of the paper is to define tourism infrastructure and underline the areas explored by researchers and the fields uncharted yet. Systematic overview of existing research is given and briefly showed by details in papers. Articles published between 2007 and upto the end of 2021 has been selected to verify results. The details of author, objectives, methodology and results and conclusions are separated to help budding researchers to identify the research gaps. Nevertheless, the last section briefly describes the areas left untouched by studies for further research. The appraisal conducted shows that certain areas are not properly explored either conceptually, theoretically or empirically. Infrastructure gap is analyzed but the factors determining the functioning of infrastructure unbotched yet. Function of infrastructure to enhance service quality of environment is still unexplored and needs further empirical analysis. At the same time, there is a complete dearth of studies to analyse the contribution of sustainable infrastructure on dimensions of environment sustainability. Lastly, it is confirmed that the accessible literatures botched to give clear practical verification on the influence of tourism infrastructure on services and their influence on tourism resources management. As a result, it is anticipated that the study will add positively in said area and is obliging for lately researchers to conduct studies on uncharted dimensions.

Abstract

The importance of construction materials to the Nigeria’s construction industry sub-sector cannot be overemphasized considering its monumental contribution to national infrastructure development, employment generation, and gross domestic product (GDP), to mention but a few. Unfortunately, there has been a continual upward surge in the prices of construction materials and its attendant effects on the volume of construction output owing to price vagaries. This study applied Granger Causality Test (GCT) to investigate the effect of Exchange Rate Volatility (ERV) on selected construction material prices for projects embarked upon within the North-Central geopolitical region of Nigeria. The data employed Exchange Rate Volatility (ERV) trend, and Average Price Trends (APT) of Cement, Block, Tile and Reinforcement for the period between 2011Q1 and 2020Q4. The results show p-values of 1.006e-05, 1.006e-05, 0.000668 and 1.006e-05 respectively  for Cement, Blocks, Tile and Reinforcement. Thus, implying that ERV do not granger-cause the selected construction material variable factors, which are Cement, Block, Tile and Reinforcement prices. The study concludes that exchange rate votality has a negative consequence on each of the selected construction materials with a unidrectional impact and same not happening in reverse. The study recommends the implementation  of requisite fiscal policies including reduction in the usage of other currencies other than the Naira to transact within Nigeria, stoppage of the use of US Dollars as an intermediary for international currency exchanges and an increase  in the  production capacity of local construction materials.
