Abstract

The acrylic-resin crown is still used as a choice in the manufacture of artificial crown because it is easy in the procedure. However accumulation plaque around cervical of the acrylic-resin crown can lead to the occurrence of gingivitis. Some research found that degradation of ECM by MMP-8 and TIMP-1 as a inhibitor during gingivitis. Roselle as a herbal plant in the treatment began to increase. Roselle is rich in Phytochemical compound which has been shown to reduce inflammation. This research determined effectiveness of roselle extract gel 10% in reducing gingivitis in patients using acrylic-resin crown and related to changes in mRNA MMP-8/TIMP-1 gene expression ratio. The subjects were 9 patients who has gingivitis post resin-acrylic crown insertion and divided in to three groups treatment with roselle extract gel 10%, negative control (base gel), and positive control (Povidon iodine). GCF samples were taken in cervical area of acrylic-resin crown with paper strips before and seven days after application of roselle extract gel 10%. The change of ratio MMP-8 and TIMP-1 m RNA gene expression is tested using Real Time-Polymerase Chain Reaction. Paired- T test shows on negative control group (p=0,301, p<0,05) does not show any change ratio of mRNA MMP- 8/TIMP-1, on positive control, there is changing ratio but not significant(p =0,060). The treatment group shows significant change in ratio of mRNA MMP-8 /TIMP-1 gene expression(p=0,018) Conclusion, Extract Roselle gel 10% can reduce the gingivitis and change the ratio of MMP-8 / TIMP 1 mRNA.

Abstract

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA /acrylic) has beenused extensivelyfor many yearsasthe maincomponent of denturebases. Clinical problemscommonly seen in the acrylic dentureis usually afractureat the midline. This occursdue toheavyocclusal forcesoracci dental damagesuch asfalling down while brushing the denture. Hence, it is necessary to strengthen the denture base especially the midline. The a forementioned issue can be solved by using reinforcement. Since those reasons above so that literature review will be presented on reinforcing materials ofacrylic denture. Denture base strengthening can be done using metal sandfibers. Each material has some advantages and disadvantages. The disadvantages of the metal reinforcement arein terms of aesthetics, can not chemically attached to the acrylic and can cause allergic reactions, furthermore, it is prone to corrosion. While the fiber reinforcement has aesthetics advantages due to its color and good adhesion to the acrylic. The addition of fiber or metalon the acrylic denture base can increase the strength of acrylic. The selection of a reinforcing material to be used should be considering the advantages and disadvantages of each material besides the availability in the dental laboratories.

Abstract

Root canal treatment in necrosis blunderbluss apices difficult to treat and to obtain a good apical seal. A therapy called apexification is required to induce the formation of a calcified apical barrier. The aim of this case report is to demonstrate apexification blunderbluss apices by the use of mineral trioxide agregat (MTA) as an apical plug and follow up fiber reinforced composite (FRC) after bleaching and direct composite. A 18 year old male patient reported with fractured right central incisor on the incisal with blunderbluss apices and the tooth has brown discoloration. MTA as an apical plug was used after the root canals had been debrided and rinsed with 2,5% NaOCl. Calcium hydroxide paste was placed in the canal before the apical portion of the canal was filled with the MTA apical plug. Bleaching before a FRC was placed in the remaining portion of the canal, core build-up was done and direct composite filled over it. At 6 month follow-up period the clinical and radiographic appearance of the teeth had healed successfully. MTA appears to be a promising alternative to calcium hydroxide apexification because of its superior sealing ability, high biocompatibility, and reduced treatment time. The reinforcement of the composite resins by fibers improves their fracture toughnes and resistance. Bleaching and direct composite to make coronal sealing and tooh color returned to the original color. MTA in apexification is valuable method if the quality of coronal sealing can be enhanced.

Abstract

Gutta percha is used for many functions in dentistry but the most popular is the root canal filler. This root canal filler is not a pure gutta percha but mixed with other materials, such as zinc oxide, wax, resi, and metal salts. The raw material of gutta percha dentistry is obtained from gutta percha tree (Palaquium gutta Baill) which in Indonesia has been cultivated in commercial scale since 1901 in Cipetir Sukabumi, in this location since 1921 is also equipped with its processing plant. This condition is very supportive if that gutta percha will be used as raw material of gutta percha dentistry. However, this material is a raw material that needs to be mixed with other materials in order to conform the standardization in dentistry, for that needed a series of research to be able to make gutta percha dentistry in Indonesia.

Abstract

The implementation of nano technology on resin modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) results in the latest restorative material which is known as Nano-ionomer. The surface texture of the restoration is one of the most important factors that influences the successful of the material usage. Surface irregularity may cause plaque retention, surface discoloration, and gingival irritation. Objective: To analyze the effect of brushing with toothpastes to the surface roughness of Nano-ionomer and RMGIC. Specimens of Nano-ionomer and RMGIC are brushed with distilled water, anti-cavity toothpaste, and whitening toothpaste (6 Specimens each) for 60 minutes, every 10 minutes the surface roughness are measured with Surface Roughness Tester (Ra). The data are statistically analyzed using Paired-samples t-Test, One-way ANOVA, and Independent-samples t-Test. There is an increase in the surface roughness of both group samples after brushing. As for RMGIC, there is a significant difference between the surface roughness values after brushing with distilled water, anti-cavity toothpaste, and whitening toothpaste, while for Nano-ionomer, the difference is not significant. Once compared, there is a significant difference between the surface roughness increase of RMGIC and Nano-ionomer (p<0.05) which can be seen after brushing for 60 minutes. The increase of surface roughness of RMGIC is significantly higher than Nano-ionomer.
