Abstract

Fiber reinforced composite (FRC) contains a polimer matrix and fibers. The FRC application as a dental splinting material requires a considerable fleksural strength to withstand the mastication forces. The fiber orientation is one factor influences the mechanical strength of FRC. The aim of study was to compare the fleksural strength between unidirectional and bidirectional orientations of sisal fiber (Agave sisalana) on FRC. The FRC with a flowable composite matrix (Master Flow, Brazil) and sisal fiber (Agave sisalana) (Balittas, Indonesia) were used. The FRC samples (25x2x2mm) were made with unidirectional and bidirectional fibers orientation (n=4). The fleksural strengths were measured using the universal testing machine and the data were analyzed statistically using an independent t-test (a=0,05). The results showed that the average fleksural strength of FRC unidirectional group was 36.56 ± 2.91 MPa and bidirectional group was 24.09 ± 2.08 MPa. The independent t-test showed a significant difference in fleksural strength between unidirectional orientation and bidirectional orientation fiber (p <0.05). This study reveals that the fleksural strength of FRC with unidirectional orientation was greater than the bidirectional orientation of sisal fiber (Agave sisalana).

Abstract

Tissue engineering aims to restore, maintain, or improve tissue functions that are defective or have been lost by pathological, phisiological and mechanical or traumatic conditions by developing biological substitutes or by reconstructing tissues. Stem cells, scaffolds and growth factor are the key components of engineered tissues and referred as the tissue engineering triad. Scaffold has an important role in providing a microenvironment to assist stem cells to make adhesion, proliferation and differentiation in order to produce the expected tissue. The scaffold should be designed in order to have the expected properties. This paper aims to discuss the function of the scaffold, properties must be owned by the scaffold and the type of material. Size, shape and the type of material, pore size and interconnetivity, influencing the behavior and function of stem cell therefore influence stem cells fate.

Abstract

The material in the oral cavity will be coated by saliva. The humidity of material that is immersed in water will increase from time to time. Longer immersion time in water causes an increase in the absorption of water by a material. Non-dental glass fiber can be used as an alternative replacement for fiber glass dental. The advantages of dental glass fiberis widely available with reasonably priced. Fiber glass non dental commonly used as building materials and automotive. Streptococcus mutans bacteria have the ability to stick to the whole surface of the mouth, including dental materials. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of dental glass fiber and non-dental glass fiber immersion in artificial saliva for 14 days to the adhesions of Streptococcus mutans bacteria.Fiber used in this study is E-glass fiber dental(Fibersplint, Polydentia SA, Switzerland), non-dental glass fiber A (LT, China), flowable composite (CharmFil Flow, Denkist, Korea) and silane coupling agent (Monobond S, Ivoclar Vivadent, Liechtenstein). Subjects were divided into three groups, each group consisting of 5 samples. Streptococcus mutans bacteria was planted in BHI media and calculated by plate count method. Results were analyzed using ANAVA. From the research it showed that the average dental glass fiber bacterial adhesions value was (953.4 ± 7.19), non-dental glass fiber(953.4 ± 7.19) while the composite resin without using fiber glass (848 ± 7.07). Statistical analysis showed a variable composition have a significant effect (p <0.05). Abstract

Tooth hypersensitivity is a clinical condition that describes localized, non spontaneous pain, and arises when tooth is stimulated using thermal, chemical, and mechanical stimuli. The use of desensitizing agent such as hydroxyapatite and Eugenia caryophyllus can be used as home treatment that can relieve tooth hypersensitivity. Hydroxyapatite is an inorganic compound that makes up the hard tissues of the human body such as bone, dentine and tooth. Hydroxyapatite has a mechanism to decrease dental hypersensitivity by inducing remineralization of the teeth and close the open dentinal tubules. Eugenia caryophyllus is a material that is used in the field of dentistry and can reduce the pain of tooth hypersensitivity by suppressing nerve receptors in the perception of pain felt by the patient. The aim of this study is to determine the influence of hydroxyapatite-based toothpaste and Eugenia caryophyllus against tooth hypersensitivity. In this observational research, researcher give different type of toothpaste to two groups of research subjects and measure the changes in tooth sensitivity for 15 days. The value of tooth hypersensitivity before and after treatment is tested using Electric Pulp Test (EPT). Independent t-test shows the result of p value = 1.30 (p>0.05). It can be concluded that there is no significant difference between hydroxyapatite and Eugenia caryophyllus in relieving tooth hypersensitivity after being used for 15 days.

Abstract

There are many sales promotions about dentifrices with various composititions nowadays, offered by several manufacturers. Public will be the main target consumers of these products and the choice lies upon their decision to become the user of these products.. Each human as a biological being, has different individual responses towards mechanical or chemical agent including material contained in dentifrices exposed by any; physical, mechanical or chemical means. In this case, white oral lesions were reported in a 34 years old man, due to the use of a dentifrice product that he has not been using before. The dentifrice contains Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), which is known as a detergent. The oral lesions detected, were surrounded by erythematous halo and mucosal erosions on his tongue. Sensitivity reaction has occurred and the patient chief complaints were disturbing sore of the tongue, on chewing and speaking The oral lesions were likely caused by the denaturating effect of the SLS, on the mucinal layer of the oral mucosal surface .Mucin is the main organic content that act as a visco-elastic material which protects the entire surface of the mucosa. It supposed to play an integrated role in the protection of the non-immune reaction of the mucosal surface. The oral mucosal epithelium might then be more exposed and vulnerable to any irritants and allergens, causing ulcerative lesions. Management provided, was cessation of SLS containing dentifrice, topical application of corticosteroids on the lesion, antiseptic mouthwash and multivitamin. The lesions disappeared within 2 weeks and the patient was suggested to use a non- SLS dentifrice as he did before.

Abstract

Oral lesions are relatively common findings in clinical practice, can occur due to various factors such as trauma, systemic diseases, autoimmune disorders, malignancies. Local trauma as one of the cause of oral lesions majority due to poor dentures, fractured restorations and sharp edges of teeth. The lesions are commonly found on the mucosa that is subjected to the source of trauma such as buccal mucosa, lateral border of the tongue or lips. Removable partial denture is a denture that can be removed and reinserted without professional help. Poor removable denture which is an ill-fitting denture, rough/sharp/overextended flanges, or lack of retention/stability could cause oral lesions. This case report describes a 76 old year man complained of pain on his right lateral tongue since 6 months ago. He was wearing a removable upper right denture which cannot be remove for about a year. It was a rough and sharp self-curing acrylic denture. There was erythematous and pain on his lateral right of the tongue but no induration on palpation. Triamcinolone acetonide 0,1% in orabase was the given treatment for the right lateral of the tongue and referred him to the prosthodontic department for replacing the denture. The oral lesion was healed after one week of treatment and the poor denture was removed. As a conclusion dentures should be made properly by the expert in order to prevent oral lesions.
