Abstract

One of the materials discussed in local English textbooks for secondary school students is language functions. They cover speech acts such as making invitations, requests, or giving opinions. These speech acts should be performed based on meta-pragmatic information—that is when, where, and to whom it is appropriate to perform a particular speech act and what expression would or would not be appropriate in a particular context of culture and context of situation. This study aimed at examining the types and the frequencies of speech acts based on Searle’s speech acts taxonomy and investigating whether or not the language functions are realized based on meta-pragmatic information. One of the findings of this research was most of the language functions discussed in the textbooks are directives and expressives. Another finding was they lacked of meta-pragmatic information. For example, there was no explicit information about the relationship between the speakers, for instance, how close they feel to one another. Keywords: language functions, meta-pragmatic information

Abstract

This research is intended to find out the types of code switching that is used in short stories and to describe the reasons why a writer does code switching in her short stories. It is a case study involving a writer of short story. Three short stories as document analysis and interview served as the data collection method. The result of this research indicated that the intra-sentential type of code switching occurs mostly in her short stories, followed by inter-sentential code switching. In addition, the reasons why code switching occurs are firstly, that certain notions or concepts are simply better expressed in the other language; secondly, code switching is used as a communicative or social strategy to show speaker involvement, mark group identity, exclude someone, raise one’s status, show expertise, and so on; thirdly, it is used to refill a linguistic need for a word or an expression; and finally, the last reason is to strengthen command. Keywords: Code switching, short stories

Abstract

Because of his creativity, Kafka’s works have discussed and analyzed by the scholars for years. Interpretations of Kafka’s work has been done in various field of study, and among his writings, ‘A Hunger Artist’ isconsidered as the most transparent and clearest piece. However, the piece shows many bewildering complication of details. The artist’s obsession towards fasting has raised a number of questions; if he is into fasting then why he has to exhibit himself? This research aims to analyze the artist’s peculiar behavior by using Maslow’s concept of self-actualization. Maslow believed that in order to be able self-actualizing, a person must be brave enough to leave his comfort zone. This study shows that the artist fails in achieving Maslow’s concept of self-actualization as he stubbornly cling to the easiest thing he knows how to do, fast. Being able to fast more than forty days is not the expression of self-actualization because fasting is the comfort zone that he refused to let go.In addition, the artist’s obsession towards the spectator’s admirationhas prevent him from enjoying the exploration of his life and he lives in a constant depression. Ironically, the artist dies in hunger, an art that he totally masters.

Abstract

Even with the new Machine Translation (MT) platform available in Google today (Neural, as compared to the previous Statistical one in the previous years), the output is not always satisfactory. This is even more obvious in specific contexts and situations. Research has shown that the implementation of rules for the process prior to and the one that follows the input activities into an MT (often referred to as the pre-editing and post editing process) has proven to be fruitful (Gerlach, et. al., 2013; Shei, 2002). However, to the best knowledge of the researcher, no research on pre-editing rules on Indonesian input into MT has been conducted. This research is significant because it might increase efficiency and effectiveness of MT, especially for the language pair Indonesian-English. For that reason, this research intends to identify the pre-editing rules required to create a solid basis to translate Indonesian Source Text (ST) into English Target Text (TT). This research adopts the product-oriented research. The results show that in the pre-editing process, the length of the sentence, the conjunctions (subordinative and correlative), and the inappropriate ST words should be the focus of attention.

Abstract

Teachers’ talk is a factor that may entail to the smoothness of English teaching and learning experience. Besides, language used by teacher in the classroom is crucial, because it will influence students’ learning process and development. This study investigated the speech acts in the teacher talk at SMP Negeri 1 Rangkasbitung. This study involved the Seventh Grade English teacher of SMP Negeri 1 Rangkasbitung as the data source. Furthermore, this study used Searle’s theory of speech acts classification as the instrument for analyzing the data. Based on the analysis, there were only four types of speech acts found in the teacher talk, 68 % directive speech act, assertive speech acts with 14 %, and the last two of speech act, commissive and expressive speech act, were only 10 % and 8 % in the teacher talk during the teaching-learning process. This study revealed that the majority of teacher talks found in the form of directive speech act, in the other words the classroom interaction went one way which more likely teacher-centeredness. Likewise, the teacher-centeredness make the students talk less and most importantly make the students became dependent and passive learner. In this study, the teacher became the central subject of learning rather than the students, hence it goes against the demands of National Standard and did not follow the principles of current Indonesian curriculum. Therefore, the conclusion which can be drawn from this study is that the teacher should utilize speech acts appropriately because high quality and the appropriateness of the teacher’s speech acts can convey teaching materials effectively, enhance teaching efficiency easily, and provide active learning meaningfully.

Abstract

Metadiscourse is an integral element of writing since it helps writers to organize and shape their arguments, but at the same time reflect their stance towards both the content and readers. There have been numerous studies concerning metadiscourse markers. However, little research has been done where Americans are directly compared with Indonesians. Furthermore, most of them have focused more on opinion, editorial, and sport articles, but not many have examined business ones. Considering this situation, the writer has become interested in investigating whether there are similarities and differences between how American and Indonesian writers incorporate metadiscourse markers in their opinion and business articles. The data for this research is taken from articles from two online newspapers, i.e. Washington Examiner and The Jakarta Post with a corpus size of 7,000 words for each type of article. The AntConc software version 3.5.6 by Anthony (2018) is used to analyze the data. The findings of the study reveal that there are some similarities and differences in the way American and Indonesian writers employ these markers in the writing of opinion and business articles.

Abstract

Learning English becomes more and more important nowadays since we know that English is considered a lingua franca among countries which do not share the same language. Learning a different language is problematic since the target Ianguage may have different elements compared to the native language. These differences are often the trigger of making errors when using the target language. The writer carried out research on ten students of LSETC, Private English Course who have completed TOEFL program to have knowledge of the students' grammatical competence by means of two composition tasks comprising between 250 words and 350 words each, within forty-five minutes. Following Selinker's theory, the writer does the analysis first from the poinf of view of lndonesian structure, and then from the point of view of English structure. He used composition tasks, particularly argumentative essays to find out what kinds of errors come from first language transfer of grammatical knowledge (interlingual errors). In brief, the study aims to find out the errors taking place and give brief explanation in relation to Indonesian grammar. The results of the study are expected to be beneficial and can give a picture of inappropriate grammaticality in accordance with Indonesian structure, and therefore the students can be more aware of the difference between both languages.  Keywords: grammatical competence, interlingual errors, linguistic category taxonomy

Abstract

HHalf of the language teachers’ time is spent on assessing students’ performance. Therefore, they should be literate to language assessment in terms of how to make a good test or knowing which method appropriate to assess their students’ learning. Without having assessment literacy, they may not be able to help their students achieve the best results of their performance. For this reason, the present study attempts to examine language teacher assessment literacy and how it has been measured. Besides, suggestions and recommendations for language teachers regarding assessment literacy are discussed in this study. A literature review was employed to conduct this research. Findings suggest that language teachers need more training on language assessment due to their lack of knowledge of language assessment. Although some of them are assessment literate, they do not practice the knowledge in their classroom. This implies that the training they need could be on how to select appropriate assessments for their students, how to design a test,  alternative assessments, and test specifications.
