ABSTRACT Coronavirus disease (Covid-19) has become a trending topic nowadays because it has affected the life of many people all around the world. One of the events during Corona outbreak is panic buying. During the pandemic, it is revealed that power is omnipresent which means that it operates everywhere in many forms. To analyze how power operates, the writer uses the theory of power by Foucault (1980) since a number of his writing are applicable as it connects not only power and knowledge but also power and truth. In his book, Foucault (1980) denoted that knowledge is power and when there is power, there is resistance and they are all connected. In order to analyse how power operates, qualitative research methodology was conducted to find the meaning behind it so that the research finding will be more related to real life. The whole series of panic buying begins with the lack of knowledge about Covid-19. When people realize that Covid-19 is not just an ordinary flu and think that the government did not take this seriously, they started not to believe what the government had said and it led to resistance. The results show that power does operate in panic buying during the corona outbreak although nowadays, there have been some changes regarding the Covid-19.

There are several ways to scrutinize literature. Indeed it is done according to the field of interests or needs. Linguistics is one of the fields that provides the way in analyzing literature through the perspective of a linguist, which is called stylistics. This research applies a stylistic approach using discourse as the language level, specifically seen through thought presentation in Divergent novel by Veronica Roth. This research endeavours: (1) to discover the types of thought presentation techniques used in the novel and (2) how thought presentation techniques reveal the language style of the author. The writer utilized purposeful sampling method since the first three chapters' data were selected and it presented the plot of why the author titled the novel 'Divergent.' Moreover, one of the aims in this research is to discover the style of the author. Thus the first three chapters were significant for the whole representative sampling. The data were categorized in the thought presentation techniques suggested by Leech and Short (2007) which are namely; Direct Thought (DT), Indirect Thought (IT), Free Direct Thought (FDT), Free Indirect Thought (FIT), and Narrative Report of Thought Acts (NRTA). Three thought presentation techniques were found in the analysis: Free Direct Thought (FDT) 83% and Free Indirect Thought (FIT) 11% and the least category is Narrative Report of a Thought Acts (NRTA) with 6% only. The study concludes that the employment of FDT and FIT as it occurred the most can reveal the author’s style. Roth’s style is dramatic since she employsfreer techniques, so that the readersget a vivid image of what is undergone by the characters. Thus, the thoughts produced obtain a high conscious quality.

This research aims to investigate the role of implicit and/or explicit knowledge in the production of grammatical errors in academic texts. Explicit knowledge is defined as conscious and declarative knowledge used to monitor language production while implicit knowledge is defined as an intuitive knowledge which enables the second language learners to use the language spontaneously without any reflection (Zhang, 2015). The reasons why this research is conducted is due to the fact that the students are still producing errors even though they have learnt English since elementary school. The data is gained from the academic text written down by fifteen English department students studying in a university in Jakarta. It is analyzed by using two different measurements: (1) Delayed Grammatical Judgment Tests (GJT), and (2) Interview including Metalingual Comment to investigate the role of explicit knowledge in the production of grammatical errors. The other two measurements are also used; they are (1) Timed Grammaticality Judgment Test (TGJT), and (2) Oral Production Test (OPT) to investigate the role of implicit knowledge. The results show that 19.2% of grammatical errors are produced due to the implicit knowledge and 80.8% is due to explicit knowledge. Since the explicit knowledge plays an important role in producing the grammatical errors, it can be concluded that teaching English grammar for university students is still important. If possible, the English Grammar lessons should be given more rooms in the overall curriculum

This research aims to find the ambiguity found in the English test of the school final exam (Ujian Akhir Sekolah Dasar). The ambiguity which is considered as a test bias, may affect both validity and reliability of the test which in the end will affect the grade gained by the test takers. The data is gained from the test items printed in the book which is sold in the bookstore. Each item will be analyzed whether it has one correct answer or not. After the test ambiguity is found, alternative test items will be proposed in order that the test will be free of the test bias so that the test can be considered as valid and reliable.

As bilingual behavior, code-switching has always been an interesting topic to discuss. Milroy and Muysken (in Chloros, 2009:9) state that code-switching is probably the fundamental issue in research related to bilingualism. This paper discusses a code-switching study of an Indonesian-English bilingual who does code-switching very often when talking to an Indonesian who speaks English fluently and accurately. The data were taken from several sources: a chat in yahoo messenger, a chat in short messaging service (SMS), a conversation recorded in a mobile phone, a short paragraph written by the informant, and regular observation. The results of the research show the types of code-switching that appeared during the research are inter- and intra-sentential.

The studies about language use in the past several years showed the existence of gender inequalities. According to Lakoff (1975), women are pressured to show the feminine qualities of weakness and frequently subordinate status toward men in a male-dominated society. However, nowadays, women's position in society is equal to men's position. The evidence that women are now equal to men invites the writer to study men's and women's language features and the politeness strategies used by men and women, especially in CMC (Computer-Mediated Communication). This study was a Qualitative Content Analysis (QCA) study used to describe the meaning of qualitative data systematically. The result did not align with the previous studies: it showed that women were also aggressive when giving an argument, and politeness strategies were not the most used in the forum discussion; it was bald of record instead. In sum, Herring's (1993) features of women's and men's language were not valid in this study, and some of them need to be revised. Further studies about politeness strategies in CMC should be explored more.

There has been multitude studies on bilingualism, yet this paper explores the trilingualism in Indonesian context. Although this case study cannot represent the whole population speaking three language in Indonesian context, it is true that the intrusions may occur due to language choice and the environmental factors as Grosjean proposes that the code switching behavior is a result of language choice in a particular setting, interactions, topics included, and the interaction functions. Using questionnaire to gather language background, language use, and language choices together with recording tape to record the conversation with the participant, the findings support Grosjean’s model of language activation of trilingualism and there are some environmental factors caused trilingual chooses the language she speaks.

ABSTRACT This study aims to find out the effectiveness of Group Investigation method in improving students’ reading ability. This quasi-experimental research design was involved 64 students of SMAN 24 Bandung as the participants. This study used a type of data collection technique including pre test and post test. The conceptual framework for the study included the independent variable of teaching method, and dependent variable of students’ ability in reading. The experimental study was conducted within this framework by using non parametric test. The results of data analysis show that Group Investigation could facilitate the students in improving their reading ability. It can be seen from the result of mean rank and Mann-Whitney U. Furthermore, the results of the pre test and post test indicate that students’ reading ability improved in four indicators, encompassing identifying the explicit information, identifying the main idea of the text, identifying the purpose of the text, and identifying the implicit information of the text. Meanwhile, the results of test in control group indicate that the students’ reading ability improved in two indicators, encompassing identifying the purpose of the text and identifying the synonym of the words. Due to the limitations of the study, it is recommended for other researchers to introduce Group Investigation gradually into the classroom and practice it before the class undertakes a full-scale investigation project and to observe the students’ social interaction skill in the classroom. It is also recommended for every teacher who wants to use this method to fully competent at implementing this method. Despite the need for the further research, this method can be used as a method in teaching reading to EFL learners. Keywords: reading ability, Group Investigation.
