Abstract

Malocclusion can affect physical, social and psychological well-being and self-esteem. Therefore, interest in the need for ortho-dontic treatment is increasing to improve the appearance, function of teeth, psychological well-being and quality of life of a person. However, orthodontic treatment carries some risks. This study aims to determine the relationship between knowledge of treatment risks and interest in using fixed orthodontic appliance. This type of research is analytical observational with a cross-sectional re-search design. The subjects of this research were 99 Hasanuddin University students from the class of 2021 and 2022. It is con-cluded that the results obtained are that the two variables have a unidirectional relationship, but it is very weak and not significant.

Abstract

The most commonly used irrigation agent today is ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) 17%; to remove the inorganic com-ponents of the smear layer in the root canal. However, EDTA can cause demineralisation of dentin in the root canal wall. Shrimp shells (Litopenaeus vannamei) contain calcium, protein and chitin. Chitin can be utilised in the manufacture of chitosan which is non-toxic, biocompatible, biodegradable, antimicrobial. This article shows the effect of chitosan from shrimp shells as an irrigati-on solution on the microhardness of root canal dentin. Laboratory experimental study with pretest posttest with control group de-sign using mandibular premolar teeth divided into 3 groups, each consisting of 9 teeth. Group 1 was irrigated with aquadest, group 2 with 0.2% chitosan and group 3 with 17% EDTA. The samples were tested using a Vicker hardness tester. Data were ana-lysed using paired t-test and one-way Anova. The data obtained in the irrigation of distilled water solution did not decrease the microhardness of root canal dentin, while the chitosan solution irrigation treatment experienced a lower than EDTA 17% (p<0.05). It was concluded that irrigation with 0.2% chitosan solution decreased the microhardness of root canal dentin which was lower than 17% EDTA solution.

Abstract

Wound healing in oral tissues requires a series of processes to close the wound and prevent infection. Sea urchin (SU) collagen can be utilised in biomedical applications such as periodontal tissue regeneration and wound healing in oral and maxillofacial surgi-cal treatments. Research shows that marine-sourced collagen can promote wound healing and skin regeneration in animals. This paper explores the potential of SU collagen as a biomaterial for wound healing applications in oral tissues. This collagen is sourced from marine connective tissues such as echinoderms and SU. Further research is needed to understand the potential of marine-sourced collagen in wound care and tissue regeneration in humans. The SU collagen shows favourable mechanical properties and potential for sustainable production. The SU collagen is promising for use in wound healing and tissue regeneration especially in oral tissues. It is concluded that SU collagen extract can accelerate wound healing and reduce scar tissue formation.

Abstract

A common psychiatric problem called attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterised by impulsivity resulting in behavioural problems and a very short attention span and is associated with childhood. This study evaluates the management of behaviour in the management of uncooperative children with ADHD symptoms using various behaviour modification techniques. A PubMed and Google Scholar publication search was conducted and 5 articles published 2014-2024 were reviewed. It was found that combined therapy, behavioural therapy and pharmacotherapy, can help dental management in children with ADHD symp-ptoms. It was concluded that dentists should be knowledgeable about behaviour management, including tell-show-do, distrac-tion, modelling, brain function training, and medications prescribed for children, as well as side effects and possible drug inter-actions with sedatives included in the dental treatment protocol.

Abstract

Factors that influence motivation are age, education, occupation, environment and economy. The most motivation comes from parents, especially mothers, as the closest person to the child's role to accompany, provide motivation and education related to oral health maintenance in children. This study discusses the relationship between maternal motivation for dental care for child-ren aged 7-9 years with the incidence of caries at SDN 37 Sungai Bangek. Quantitative research of analytical survey type with cross-sectional design was conducted in December 2023 with a sample size of 79 people by simple random sampling. Data were collected from the results of questionnaires and dental caries examinations, univariate analysis was presented in the form of frequency distribution and percentage, bivariate analysis using the chi-square test, and processed with the SPSS v.26.0 pro-gramme. The results showed that most mothers' motivation was weak as much as 64.5%, most dental caries status was very high as much as 32.9%, and there was a relationship between maternal motivation towards dental care for the children with the inci-dence of caries (p=0.003). It was concluded that there was a relationship between maternal motivation towards dental care for child-ren aged 7-9 years with the incidence of caries at SDN 37 Sungai Bangek with a weak motivation category and very high caries.

Abstract

Production and cultivation of tilapia fish (TF) (Oreochromis niloticus) in Indonesia is the second largest after China. However, TF waste is a potential pathogen. The waste of TF can be managed into valuable products, such as collagen extracts that can be used in dentistry in several dosage forms, such as sponges, hydrogels, membranes, and nano collagen fibres. There are various thera-peutic applications of collagen extracts from TF skin, especially in the field of dentistry, such as in the treatment of wounds heal-ing, dry socket healing, bone necrosis, grafting, flap surgery, and periodontal tissue regeneration. TF skin can be used as an ex-cellent and economical regenerative treatment to provide cost-effective treatment. However, larger-scale studies worldwide should be conducted before it is officially used widely.

Abstract

Oral health impact profile-14 (OHIP-14) is a method used to measure oral health quality of life (OHRQoL) after radiotherapy. This case report aims to evaluate OHIP-14 before and after head and neck cancer treatment. In case-1, a 51-year-old man complained of an unpleasant sensa-tion in the mouth, loss of taste, and dry lips after undergoing the 17th cycle of radiotherapy. Case-2, a 24-year-old man complained of dry mouth and unpleasant sensation inside the mouth especially when eating and drinking after undergoing 3rd cycle radiotherapy. Both were diagnosed with stage III tongue cancer. The patients were referred to the Department of Oral Medicine. The patients were diagnosed with oral mucositis, acute pseudomembranous candidiasis, exfoliative cheilitis and xerostomia. Patients were treated with mechanical cleaning using gauze soaked in 0.9% NaCl, gargling with 0.025% hyaluronic acid three times daily for oral mucositis, nystatin oral suspension for oral candidiasis, vaseline album and GC dry Mouth® topical commercial gel for dry lips and xerostomia. The OHIP-14 scores of both patients decreased. It was concluded that a decrease in OHIP-14 score indicates successful treatment of head and neck cancer patients with oral complications after radiotherapy.
