Abstract

To prevent health risks in excessive consumption, monitoring benzoic acid as a food additive is necessary in line with SDG 3 principles. Conventional methods for determining benzoic acid levels have limitations in selectivity and sensitivity due to matrix interference contained in food products. This study aims to determine benzoic acid levels in support of food safety monitoring in Jakarta by optimizing the mobile phase in a reversed-phase HPLC system (RP-HPLC. Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with a UV detector, investigated in this research, operated at 225 nm. A C-18 or octadecyl silica (ODS) column stationary phase (250 mm x 4,6 mm, 5 µm particle size) was used, which is classified as nonpolar. The mobile phase used is a polar methanol-phosphate buffer with a ratio 4:96 at pH 6.8. Optimization of mobile phase composition and pH was necessary to control the ionization degree of benzoic acid, improve analyte‒stationary phase interactions, and produce optimal retention time, peak shape, and resolution. The test results for benzoic acid levels in carbonated drinks, jelly drinks, and mayonnaise were 140.973 mg/kg, 232.294 mg/kg, and 710.695 mg/kg, respectively. It can be concluded that the benzoic acid levels in the sample remain below the maximum limit set by BPOM RI.

Abstract

Lead (Pb) contamination in water poses serious environmental and health risks, necessitating the development of effective and sustainable adsorbents for its removal. This study aimed to synthesize and characterize magMCM-41 composites derived from rice husk silica, and evaluate their performance for Pb(II) ion removal in aqueous solutions. The magMCM-41 was prepared by integrating magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles into a mesoporous silica framework via co-preparation and sol-gel methods using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a template. Characterization by XRD, FTIR, BET, and PSA confirmed successful composite formation, revealing a high specific surface area o f 476.744 m2/g, a mesoporous framework (pore diameter 3.83 nm), and an average particle size of 362.7 nm. Adsorption conditions were optimized using Response Surface Methodology (RSM); pH positively influenced capacity, whereas adsorbent dosage had a negative effect. The maximum adsorption capacity was 115.77 mg/g at pH 5 with 0.05 g of adsorbent. The Dubinin-Radushkevich model best described the adsorption equilibrium (R2=0.935), indicating physisorption on a heterogeneous surface. Thermodynamic analysis confirmed a spontaneous and exothermic process. These results demonstrate that rice husk-derived magMCM-41 is a sustainable and magnetically separable adsorbent with high potential for Pb(II) remediation.

Abstract

The transportation of crude oil through pipelines is significantly influenced by its viscosity, particularly at low temperatures where wax crystals begin to form and restrict fluid flow. The use of chemical additives, such as pour point depressants (PPDs), has become an effective approach to improving the flow characteristics of waxy crude oil. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of LEP-01 pour point depressant on the viscosity of crude oil using a rotational rheology method. Crude oil samples were treated with LEP-01 at concentrations of 1000, 2000, and 3000 ppm, while untreated crude oil was used as a blank sample. Before testing, all samples were heated, mixed to achieve homogeneity, and analyzed using a rotational rheometer under controlled cooling conditions. The experimental results showed that crude oil viscosity increased as the temperature decreased due to wax crystallization. The addition of LEP-01 effectively reduced the viscosity of crude oil compared with the blank sample, with the highest concentration (3000 ppm) providing the greatest viscosity reduction. This improvement is attributed to the ability of LEP-01 to modify wax crystal growth and inhibit crystal aggregation, thereby reducing flow resistance at low temperatures. Overall, the results demonstrate that LEP-01 has considerable potential as a flow improver for maintaining crude oil flowability during low-temperature transportation and handling.

Abstract

Crude oil characterization is used to evaluate crude oil properties before refinery processing. During an industrial internship at the Physical Properties Laboratory, LEMIGAS, two crude oil samples were analyzed for Specific Gravity (SG), API Gravity, Conradson Carbon Residue (CCR), Flash Point, and Ash Content. SG was determined using ASTM D1298, CCR using ASTM D189, Flash Point using ASTM D93 and IP 170, and Ash Content using ASTM D482. API Gravity was calculated from the corrected SG values. Samples XX and XY had SG values of 0.8276 and 0.8597, corresponding to API Gravity values of 39.5° and 33.1°, respectively. CCR values were 0.778 wt.% and 2.520 wt.%, while Flash Point values were 25.0 °C and 79.5 °C. Ash Content values were 0.033 wt.% and 0.008 wt.% for samples XX and XY, respectively. Sample XY had higher CCR and SG, while sample XX had higher API Gravity and lower Flash Point. These results show differences in the physical properties, carbon residue, flammability, and inorganic residue of the two crude oil samples.

Abstract

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is a major energy source in Indonesia’s household, commercial, and industrial sectors; therefore, its quality must be controlled to ensure combustion performance and user safety. This study evaluated the hydrocarbon composition and ethyl mercaptan content of LPG samples and their conformity with the Decree of the Director General of Oil and Gas No. 116.K/10/DJM/2020. Five mixed-LPG samples were analysed at the Gas Composition Laboratory of BBPMGB LEMIGAS. Hydrocarbon composition (C₂–C₅) was determined by Gas Chromatography–Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID) according to ASTM D2163, while ethyl mercaptan content was measured using a length-of-stain gas detector tube following ASTM D5305. The GC-FID system was verified using a Certified Reference Material (CRM), and all thirteen measured components were within the CRM acceptance ranges, confirming instrument suitability. Samples 1 and 2 complied with the C₂ limit (max 0.80 %vol), while Samples 3, 4, and 5 exceeded the limit with values of 0.9300, 0.8510, and 1.0281 %vol, respectively. All samples met the C₃+C₄ and C₅+ requirements. Ethyl mercaptan contents of Samples 1–4 (1.8–3.9 lb/10,000 AG) met the minimum requirement, whereas Sample 5 did not (0.96 lb/10,000 AG). Overall, only Samples 1 and 2 satisfied all tested parameters, indicating that LPG quality evaluation requires multiple quality parameters.

Abstract

Utilizing catfish bones to produce flour is an effort to increase the value of fishery by-products. This study aimed to produce catfish bone flour and evaluate its yield, as well as its moisture, ash, and fat content. The processing steps involved washing the bones, heating them for 15 minutes, pressure-cooking them for 1.5 hours, drying, grinding, and sieving. Yield was determined by the ratio of flour mass to initial bone mass, while chemical characteristics were analysed using AOAC methods. The results showed that 210 g of bones yielded 85 g of flour, representing a yield of 40.48%. The resulting flour had a moisture content of 7.45%, ash content of 63.29%, and fat content of 2.95%. The high ash content indicates a significant inorganic fraction, whereas the fat content was relatively low compared to other fish bone flours reported previously. The study demonstrates that processing via heating, pressure-cooking, drying, and grinding yields bone flour with measurable chemical characteristics. These findings can serve as baseline data for process optimization and the development of catfish bone utilization into value-added products.

Abstract

Inhibitors of α-glucosidase are one of the important therapies in controlling diabetes mellitus, a metabolic disease with an increasing global prevalence that requires safer treatment alternatives. This study aims to explore the potential of bioactive compounds from Spirulina platensis as antidiabetic candidates using an in-silico approach. The research methods include analysis of bioactive components through GC-MS, prediction of physicochemical properties, pharmacokinetics, and toxicity (ADME-T), validation of docking methods, and simulation of molecular docking against α-glucosidase enzyme (PDB ID: 2QMJ). The results showed that the ten best compounds met the drug-likeness criteria and had good ADME-T profiles, including 3-Buten-2-one; 4-(2,6,6-trimethyl-1-cyclohexen-1-yl)- (β-ionone); 2(4H)-Benzofuranone, 5,6,7,7a-tetrahydro-4,4,7a-trimethyl-; (R)- (Dihydroactinidiolide), 3,7,11-Trimethyl-1-dodecanol (Farnesanol); 9-Octadecen-1-ol, (Z)- (Oleyl Alcohol), Cyclohexanol, 2-methyl-5-(1-methylethyl)-; (1. alpha.,2. beta.,5. alpha.)- ((+)-Carvomenthol); Levomenthol, 2-Buten-1-one; 1-(2,6,6-trimethyl-1-cyclohexen-1-yl)-(Damascone); 2,2,6,7-Tetramethyl-10-oxatricyclo[4.3.0.1(1. 7)] decan-5-one (Ketalactone); 7-Acetyl-3,3-dimethylbicyclo [4.1.0] heptan-2-one (7-Acetyl-Bicycloheptanone); and Acetic acid,6,6-dimethyl-2-methylene-7-(3-oxobutylidene) oxepan-3-ylmethyl ester (ADM-ester). The docking results show that some compounds have good binding affinity and are able to form stable interactions with active residues of α-glucosidase. Spirulina platensis has potential as a source of natural α-glucosidase inhibitor candidates for antidiabetic therapy.

Abstract

Achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 on access to clean water and adequate sanitation requires effective wastewater management, including from healthcare facilities such as hospitals. Hospitals have the potential to generate wastewater containing organic and inorganic contaminants, as well as pathogenic microorganisms, which can pose a risk of environmental pollution if not properly treated. This study aims to evaluate the quality of wastewater produced by a hospital in Central Lampung Regency based on the quality standard parameters stipulated in the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia Number 68 of 2016. The parameters tested include pH, Total Suspended Solid (TSS), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD₅), fatty oil, and total ammonia. The test results showed that the pH value was 6.98; TSS 3.00 mg/L; COD 43.28 mg O₂/L; BOD₅ 1.22 mg/L; fatty oil 0.3 mg/L; and total ammonia 0.191 mg/L. All parameters were well below the maximum quality limits for hospital wastewater. These findings indicate that the hospital's wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) is functioning correctly, resulting in safe wastewater and no potential environmental pollution. This evaluation supports efforts to meet SDG indicator 6.3, which focuses on improving wastewater treatment and reducing water pollution

Abstract

Petroleum remains a key energy source in Indonesia, driving continuous drilling to find new oil reserves. Drilling operations rely on potassium chloride (KCl) as a supporting chemical, functioning to stabilize rock formations, reduce pipe corrosion, and control wellbore failure. KCl used for drilling must meet quality standards set by Scomi Oiltools' Drilling Fluid Engineering handbook. This Field Work Practice, conducted at LEMIGAS, Jakarta, evaluated the density, turbidity, and chloride content of eleven KCl samples from three companies against Scomi Oiltools standards. Density was measured using an Automatic Density Analyzer (ASTM C604); turbidity via Direct Reading Spectrophotometer (ASTM D7315-17); and chloride content through Mohr argentometric titration (ASTM D512-04; SNI 6989.19:2009). Results showed densities of 1.9–2.9 g/mL, exceeding the ideal 1.0–1.16 g/mL range, and chloride levels of 1,950–2,060 ppm, far below the required minimum of 4,700 ppm. Turbidity ranged from 1–80 FTU, with all but one sample meeting the standard below 20 FTU. Thus, while turbidity generally complied, density and chloride content of all samples failed to meet Scomi Oiltools standards, highlighting the need for rigorous quality testing before selecting KCl for drilling use.
