Abstract

In the context of today’s global media culture, Gail Honeyman’s Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine portrays how individuals develop emotional attachment to mediated figures, as the main character forms a parasocial relationship with a musician. Although not fully explained in the narrative, this reflects a common phenomenon in the global era. This research aims to investigate the connection between mediated intimacy and the global era, as well as its impact on the development of individualism. Employing a descriptive qualitative method and drawing on Jean Baudrillard’s theory of hyperreality, this research also explains how reality has been replaced by simulation via the media. The analysis reveals that the main character forms an emotional attachment based on media representations rather than fundamental interactions, symbolizing the shifting meaning of reality in modern life. Such attachment encourages the main character to withdraw from social situations and to prefer to live in an imaginary world. This reflects the rise of individualism in a global society influenced by the media. Beyond previous studies that primarily emphasize the psychological dimensions of parasocial ties, this research contributes by highlighting their cultural implications and significance in understanding contemporary social dynamics.

Abstract

This research constitutes a systematic literature review that investigates the application of tools and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in stylistic analysis. The objective of the evaluation is to identify the various types of tools and AI utilized in stylistics and to assess their respective advantages and disadvantages in facilitating language analysis. Since the selection of data sources is critical, the relevance of each article was carefully assessed to ensure analytical accuracy and applicability of the findings. Utilizing the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) methodology, nine pertinent articles published between 2015 and 2025 were examined according to specific inclusion criteria. The study’s findings reveal that tools such as Voyant Tools, WordSmith, LIWC, and StyloMetrix are extensively employed to analyze linguistic and stylometric characteristics across different text types, including poetry, emails, and texts generated by AI. While AI has demonstrated its ability to improve efficiency, objectivity, and analytical depth, it continues encountering difficulties in capturing linguistic subtleties and cultural contexts. This study advocates for a collaborative approach between humans and AI to achieve more thorough and precise stylistic analyses in education, literature, and forensic linguistics.

Abstract

This study explores Cleo’s loneliness in Coco Mellors’s Cleopatra and Frankenstein using a qualitative method. Although previous studies have examined loneliness in literary works, limited attention has been given to loneliness as an internal emotional condition that affects the dynamics of intimate relationships through the New Criticism approach. By using close reading, the analysis focuses on formal elements, namely characterization, plot, setting, symbol, and irony. Through this approach, the study reveals how Cleo’s loneliness is not a simply passing, but a condition that repeatedly shapes her decision, relationships, and sense of self. From moving, marrying, to hurting others, Cleo repeatedly attempts to escape from her loneliness. Rather than finding comfort from external connections, this study shows that Cleo finds emotional healing from within by returning to her artistic practice and transforming her pain into her art.

Abstract

This study explores how socio-economic background shapes the representation of girlhood in selected Indonesian children’s literature. Guided by Crenshaw’s intersectionality theory, which views identity as shaped by overlapping social categories, this study applies qualitative textual analysis to two storybooks from the Let’s Read Asia project, Cepat Kering, Bunga Kemboja! and Bukan Halangan. By using the close reading method, the analysis focuses on identifying scenes, expressions, and descriptions that construct different forms of resilience through different class contexts. The findings show that Ratih, a working-class girl, develops resilience and independence through financial hardship and self-sacrifice. On the other hand, Kapisa, the girl from a middle-class family, builds resilience through care, guidance, and access to information. These contrasting pathways demonstrate that social class strongly shapes the meaning of resilience and determines whether it is formed by necessity or through privilege. The study concludes that while both stories promote positive images of girls, they also risk normalizing inequality by presenting different class-based realities as equally admirable. These results highlight the importance of examining girlhood experiences at the intersection of gender, class, and age.

Abstract

The learners of MA Hubbulwathan Duri were diligently clicking and commenting on videos, yet they often failed to take notes or practice the material being taught. Learners were entertained (due to engaging audiovisuals), but this enjoyment does not always translate into a deep understanding of English concepts. Some learners struggled to filter out linguistically accurate content among the abundance of available videos. This research aimed to find out learners’ engagement in English learning via YouTube. This research used a survey research design. The data analysis technique used was descriptive. The population of this research was the tenth grade of MA Hubbulwathan Duri. A census study was used as the sampling technique in this research. The sample consisted of 29 respondents, and the research instrument was questionnaires. The findings revealed that learners’ engagement in learning English via YouTube at MA Hubbulwathan Duri was categorized as High across all measured dimensions. YouTube can capture learners’ focus and mental attention. YouTube successfully encouraged learners to move beyond the stage of simply ‘hearing’ (input) to the stage of ‘trying to produce’ (output). The learners were working hard to connect what they already know with new information from YouTube. YouTube serves as a powerful media for English language learning.

Abstract

This study investigated the use of conventionalised impoliteness strategies and their metapragmatic comments employed by the main characters in the Instant Family (2018) movie. Using Culpeper’s (2011) framework of impoliteness, the study identified nine types of conventionalised strategies and examined how hearers evaluated them through verbal and nonverbal metapragmatic responses. In addition, a descriptive qualitative method was applied to analyze the interactions among the Wagner family members, uncovering patterns of impolite utterances and their social dynamics. The result showed that the most frequently used conventionalised impoliteness strategies were direct insults, pointed criticisms, and unpalatable questions, which Ellie and Lizzy mainly employed. At the same time, Juan did not display any impoliteness, indicating a gender-based distribution. These strategies were responded to through various metapragmatic responses, including verbal forms such as denials, justifications, and counter-attacks, as well as nonverbal expressions. In conclusion, it highlighted the contextual nature of impoliteness and suggested that family-based narratives offered a rich foundation for examining pragmatic phenomena in everyday interactions.

Abstract

AI-assisted language learning tools such as Grammarly and ChatGPT are increasingly used in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) writing classrooms to support linguistic accuracy and drafting efficiency. However, their role in fostering critical thinking and cultural awareness remains insufficiently explored. This qualitative study investigates how undergraduate English majors at Syiah Kuala University, Indonesia, integrate Grammarly and ChatGPT into their academic writing and how cultural bias in AI-generated suggestions is recognized and addressed. Data were collected from AI-mediated students’ writing samples and semi-structured interviews and analyzed using perspectives from second language acquisition and cross-cultural communication. The findings reveal that while AI tools contribute to improved grammatical precision and lexical accuracy, they frequently generalize or flatten culturally embedded meanings, resulting in texts that are linguistically polished but culturally superficial when adopted uncritically. The study further shows that explicit pedagogical interventions, including guided reflection and critical prompts, enable students to evaluate AI feedback more critically and reinsert local cultural perspectives into their writing. These findings highlight the essential role of educators in mediating AI use and suggest that effective integration of AI in EFL writing requires balancing linguistic accuracy with the development of critical thinking and cultural literacy.

Abstract

This research explores the expression of psychological trauma in “Take a Break”, one of the songs in the debut album by Indonesian singer-songwriter Arash Buana, Logic Mess (2022). The song presents a personal narrative shaped by emotional distress, inner conflict, traumatic experiences, and the journey to deal with them. Using Sigmund Freudian view on defense mechanisms, this study discuses how trauma is portrayed and processed throughout the song lyrics. The methodology used in this research is a qualitative descriptive analysis. The finding shows that the trauma experienced by the song character is resolved through various defense mechanisms such as denial, sublimation, rationalization, regression, and displacement which also confirms the relevance of Freud’s theory in interpreting the inner dynamics of an individual.

Abstract

This study investigates how Western movies facilitate students’ cross-cultural understanding in a Cross-Cultural Understanding (CCU) course within an English Literature program in Indonesia. Using a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected over four instructional weeks through classroom observations, audio-video recordings of role-plays, and reflective journals. The findings show a clear progression in students’ intercultural learning. Initially, students experienced cultural dissonance when encountering unfamiliar pragmatic features such as direct refusals, sarcasm, and informal teacher-student interaction. With guided scaffolding, they began to reinterpret these behaviours and develop emerging cultural awareness. By the third week, students engaged in comparative reasoning between Western and Indonesian/Javanese norms, which later evolved into perspective-taking in the final week. Reflective journals reveal increased confidence, pragmatic sensitivity, and deeper cultural insight. Overall, the study concludes that Western movies are effective multimodal input for intercultural learning, but their pedagogical value is maximized when paired with structured discussions and reflective tasks.

Abstract

It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover is a novel inspired by the author’s personal experience witnessing her mother endure domestic violence. The story follows Lily Bloom, a woman who grew up in an abusive household and later faces similar patterns in her adult romantic relationship. This study analyzes Lily’s psychological development using Anna Freud’s psychoanalytic theory, particularly focusing on defense mechanisms. The objective is to explore how Lily’s unresolved childhood trauma influences her thought processes and decision-making in adulthood. Through a qualitative method, the study examines narrative passages and character dialogues from the novel to identify psychological patterns. The analysis focuses on five of Anna Freud’s defense mechanisms: repression, denial, rationalization, displacement, and suppression, highlighting how Lily both consciously and unconsciously relies on these strategies to cope with trauma. The findings reveal that Lily’s exposure to domestic violence as a child profoundly impacts her adult emotional responses, making it difficult for her to confront abuse, assert boundaries, or think rationally in her relationship. Ultimately, the study emphasizes how defense mechanisms serve as psychological tools to shield individuals from the lasting effects of childhood trauma, as reflected in Lily’s behavior and emotional struggles throughout the novel.
