Abstract

The exercise of power in leadership may involve conflicts, especially in precarious situations. Politeness strategies come into practice to cushion the aftermath of face-threatening acts that presumably trigger tension. This study aims to shed light on female leaders' linguistic strategies in managing problematic discourses involving older male subordinates in the Indonesian university context. The naturalistic data was obtained from recorded meetings. The study results depict that the female leader employs both direct and indirect strategies in handling problematic issues, especially when the female leader has to face up to senior subordinates. She adopts direct strategies to convey important messages that have to be obeyed by the employees. On the other hand, she adheres to the cultural norms that oblige younger people to show respect to older people by using indirect strategies. The politeness strategies employed in her utterances show how culture shapes communication approaches. In general, a female leader has to have a range of sophisticated linguistic competence in a high-rank managerial position.

Abstract

This research outlines the research methodology used in a literature review on the Quality Governance Design of Good University Governance (GUG) in the education sector, with a focus on the GUG concept, performance models, and audit practices from a risk management perspective. The GUG concept is a vital framework for enhancing the quality and effectiveness of higher education institutions such as universities, with principles of transparency, accountability, participation, and ethics as its core components. This concept also emphasizes the importance of innovative ideas and the leadership capabilities of university leaders in facing global changes. Furthermore, this research discusses relevant performance models, including the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), which assist universities in measuring their performance through financial, customer, internal process, and growth and learning perspectives. These models help universities become more focused, transparent, and accountable in their governance. Audit practices, both internal and external, are also essential elements in higher education risk management. Internal audits help identify operational, financial, and reputational risks, while external audits ensure compliance with accreditation standards. Audit practices help universities manage risks efficiently and strengthen transparency and accountability in educational governance. This research also illustrates the integration of the GUG concept in higher education, including internal and external quality assurance, program accreditation, and sustainable quality improvement. Previous research indicates that many factors influence the quality of university governance, including government influence, leadership, and quality assurance priorities.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of training aimed at enhancing English speaking skills among students at SMAN 6 Betara, Tanjung Jabung Barat, through the Synectics model. The Synectics approach, known for fostering creativity and critical thinking, encourages students to explore abstract concepts and express their thoughts through metaphors and analogies. This method not only promotes language proficiency but also enhances students' confidence and engagement in the learning process. The training program involved interactive activities, structured group discussions, and creative exercises, which allowed students to practice speaking in a supportive environment. Pre- and post-training assessments indicated significant improvements in vocabulary usage, pronunciation, and overall speaking fluency. The findings suggest that the implementation of the Synectics model in language education can lead to more dynamic and effective learning experiences, ultimately contributing to better communication skills among high school students. The study highlights the importance of innovative teaching strategies in language education and recommends further integration of creative methodologies to improve speaking abilities in non-native English contexts. Future research could explore the long-term effects of such training and its impact on students' overall academic performance.

Abstract

The relationship between language, ideology, and power has garnered the interest of numerous academics in the discipline of linguistics. Persuasive speech is a potent instrument employed by the government to govern and firmly establish its ideology. The objective of this study was to analyze Joko Widodo's international speeches in 2015 and 2022 to identify the Indonesian ideology values conveyed in his speeches and examine the expressions of these values that could serve as representations of the Indonesian ideology. The researcher employed qualitative research as the chosen research design, specifically emphasising critical discourse analysis. This investigation employed Van Dijk's textual methodology, which specifically examined the macrostructure and microstructure of the text. The research revealed that in both addresses, Joko Widodo articulated 8 principles that signified four concepts of Pancasila. The ideological ideals encompass care, unity, diligence, egalitarianism, justice, resourcefulness, courage, self-assurance, attention, thoughtfulness, sincerity, kindness, and politeness. President Joko Widodo effectively communicated the attributes of the four concepts of Pancasila in his speeches presented in both English and Indonesian. These speeches successfully conveyed the virtues of the four principles of Pancasila.

Abstract

The process of translating Indonesian proverbs into their English equivalents reflects complicated interaction between language, culture, and meaning. The objective of the study was to identify the different forms of Indonesian proverbs that have equivalents in the English language, as well as the cultural similarities and differences between Indonesian proverbs and their English equivalents. This study was conducted using qualitative descriptive research methodology and employed document analysis. The data were collected in a form of documents from "Himpunan Lengkap Peribahasa Nusantara, "Kamus Peribahasa, "A Complete Collection of English Proverb, "Proverb from around the World, " and "Oxford Dictionary of Proverb. " From source texts with lexical elements relating to Indonesian culture terms, the researchers obtained another 57 Indonesian proverbs. Once the gathering of data had been carried out, the data was then analyzed through a comparison of Indonesian proverb with its English version. The findings of this study indicate that a number of Indonesian proverbs have equivalents in English with identical meanings. Nevertheless, there are dissimilarities in sentence and proverb classifications, as well as structural forms of proverbs, under the influence of factors such as "history, " "religion, " "values, " "social organization, " and "language. " This project differs from some earlier studies, which tended to focus more on issues of meaning or word-for-word translation. It examines in detail the way cultural elements like history and religious symbols affect the expression of similar ideas in these two different language traditions. This new approach uncovers previously unconsidered patterns in the manifestation of Indonesian collectivist values and English individualist values in proverbs. This helps us make further sense of issues related to intercultural communication and translation studies. One of the recommendations of the researchers is to conduct further research on the use of Indonesian proverbs and their English equivalents by EFL students.

Abstract

Traditional views of leadership often associate strong leadership with directness, decisiveness, and dominance, which are stereotypically coded as masculine while perceiving empathy and collaborative orientation–qualities commonly associated with femininity–as less compatible with effective leadership. However, contemporary research demonstrates the increasing importance of empathy in effective leadership, particularly during crisis situations. This study explores the persuasive strategies employed by New Zealand’s former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern in her speeches following the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this study applies discourse analysis to six transcripts of speeches by Jacinda Ardern to identify discourse patterns that demonstrate her persuasive strategies and examined how these patterns function in crisis communication. The findings revealed three critical elements of Ardern’s persuasive strategies: combining transparency and compassion to foster trust, demonstrating clarity and decisiveness to establish authority, and using motivational and forward-looking discourse to inspire collective action. These elements demonstrate how Ardern’s empathetic communication helped build trust and encourage compliance, while her directive and decisive language facilitated actionable resolution, which enabled the nation’s swift recovery. By critically challenging persistent gender stereotypes in leadership that frame empathy and decisiveness as mutually exclusive traits, this study underscores the transformative potential of empathetic leadership in managing crise and advances gender equity in leadership discourse.
