Abstract

Conflict in the South China Sea have significant risk. China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and the Philippines have competing territorial and jurisdictional claims, particularly over rights to exploit the region's possibly extensive reserves of oil and gas. Freedom of navigation in the region is also a contentious issue, especially between the United States and China over the right of U.S. military vessels to operate in China's two- hundred-mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ). These tensions are shaping— and being shaped by—rising apprehensions about the growth of China's military power and its regional intentions. China has embarked on a substantial modernization of its maritime paramilitary forces as well as naval capabilities to enforce its sovereignty and jurisdiction claims by force if necessary. At the same time, it is developing capabilities that would put U.S. forces in the region at risk in a conflict, thus potentially denying access to the U.S. Navy in the western Pacific. Given the growing importance of the U.S.-China relationship, and the Asia- Pacific region more generally, to the global economy, the United States has a major interest in preventing any one of the various disputes in the South China Sea from escalating militarily.

Abstract

Abstract

The protected conflict between Free Aceh Movement (GAM) and Government of Indonesia (GoI) lasted nearly 30 years (1976-2005). It was solved with Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on 15 August 2005 in Helsinki Finland which mediated by Crisis Management Initiative (CMI). Conse- quently GoI should establish a new law on the governing Aceh (LoGA) as a follow up of the MoU. But some articles of LoGA are contra on MoU and many issues remain unsolved. Nevertheless, this reality created oppor- tunities for economic and socio-politic development in Aceh. One great change is GAM transformed to political party and being the ruler in Aceh since 2006. Hence peace accord (MoU) has been lasting for 9 years, although Aceh is fragile right now. This paper explains the conflict settlement and constitution reform, and the impact on authority arrangement and relationship between Aceh-Indonesia after MoU Helsinki.

Abstract

Neocolonialism is the geopolitical practice of using capitalism, business globalization, and cultural imperialism to influence a country, in lieu of either direct military control (imperialism) or indirect political control (hegemony). In post-colonial studies, the term neo-colonialism describes the influence of countries from the developed world in the respective internal affairs of the countries of the developing world; that, despite the wars of Spanish American wars of independence at the beginning of the nineteenth century, and decolonisation that occurred in the aftermath of the Second World War (1939–45), the (former) colonial powers continue to apply existing and past international economic arrangements with their former colony countries, and so maintain colonial control.

Abstract

The methodologies of liberal or progressive Islam rest on the interpretation and re-interpretation of traditional Islamic scripture (the Quran) and other texts (such as the Hadith), a process called ijtihad. This can vary from the slight to the most liberal, where only the meaning of the Quran is considered to be a revelation, with its expression in words seen as the work of the prophet Muhammad in his particular time and context. As a consequence, liberal/progressive Muslims may then interpret verses from the Quran allegorically or even set them aside.

Abstract

Although the principles of journalism – truth, verification, balance, and independence from power – are arguably universal, they are interpreted through the prisms of local culture. Five news organizations in Indonesia and Malaysia suggest a variety of approaches to understanding the relationship between journalism and Islam. Whereas writers at Indonesia's Sabili magazine were selected based on their experience in the tarbiyah or education movement, at Republika (an Indonesian newspaper established to serve the Muslim community) journalistic skills are more important than outward demonstrations of piety. Muslim journalists at the two most liberal of these publications, Indonesia's Tempo magazine and Malaysia's news-portal Malaysiakini, see their work in substantive rather than scripturalist terms, and editors of Harakah, the newspaper of the Pan- Malaysian Islamic party, are outspoken champions of freedom of expression. These varied approaches suggest there is much to be learned from the influence of Islam on the practice of journalism in Southeast Asia.
