Abstract

Nurcholish Madjid has pointed out that HAMKA (Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah) was the pioneer of Neosufism in the country. This scholar developed a deep religious spirituality without seeking isolation from society. He suggested that a Sufi (Muslim mystic) should be active in society. HAMKA concept not separate from knowing God as another manifestation of the love of God which is the highest love that exists in the universe, including the love that also exists between the opposite sex. According to HAMKA, this love must be sacred and to be based on devotion to God. HAMKA raises love as a common theme that characterizes Western romance in addition to other characteristics. Through the power of imagination and creativity, know- ledge, experience and insight of Islam of HAMKA, then the romanticism becomes more Islamic (Sufism) as an indicator of his predicate as a philo- sopher, artist and scholar.

Abstract

The 2011 revolution in Egypt started with marches, demonstrations and civil resistance on January 25. Protesters were inspired by the successful uprising in Tunisia, where demonstrators succeeded in bringing down the govern- ment. People came on to the streets demanding the overthrow of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. They complained of poverty, unemployment, corruption and autocratic governance of the president who had ruled the country for 30 years. Demonstrators included Islamic, liberal, anti-capi- talist, nationalist and feminist elements. The Egyptian protesters' grievances focused on legal and political issues, including police brutality, state-of-emergency laws, lack of free elections and freedom of speech, corruption, and economic issues including high un- employment, food-price inflation and low wages. The protesters' primary demands were the end of the Mubarak regime and emergency law, freedom, justice, a responsive non-military government and a voice in managing Egypt's resources. Strikes by labour unions added to the pressure on government officials.

This article argues that his power struggle supported by the people because Chavez vision and mission are to favour the people inrerest, and he takes care about people. . Chave political project, as stated Ellner as non- revolutionary path of radical populism, expressed through various political program missions, namely to encourage social revolutionary program, but not in the political project of the revolution, at least during the Chávez powers throughout 1998-2006. However, Ellner mentioned that non- revolutionary path of radical populism can also lead to revolutionary-path, meaning that political poryek Chávez is still unfinished and still possible to reach a variety of changes, whether the "Bolivarian Revolution" will take the form of non-revolutionary transformation, or even revolutionary- path.

Abstract

Bung Hatta, one of Indonesian founding fathers, has had very briliant vision for Indonesian foreign policy following our independence August 17, 1945. Since the end of colonial era, his principle to implement “politik bebas aktif” (free and active politics) in international arena has been underpinning for Indonesia foreign policy, both in the era of Cold War in what the so-called “sailing between two reefs namley Communist Bloc and Capitalist one” and in the aftermath. Hatta’s vision is still relevant for us in implementing Indonesian’s foreign policy in the era of globalized world today, in which the fall of communism and the winning of capitalism has been the challenges for the developing countries such as the Non-Alignment movement and The Third World countries in doing their foreign policy for global peace, justice and security. The World is changing, but Hatta’s principle for Indonesian foreign policy is still contextual for our age.

Abstract

The lessons that can be drawn from the recent experience of East Asian economies appear to reinforce the argument that places the importance of market strengthening and government systems in the sustainability of economic recovery for which there are no short cuts. There a few key principles to keep in mind when we look at reform so that 10 years from now Asia does not find itself revisiting the unlearned lessons of 1997. The first is the practice of prudence and the concern for account- ability. Also it is important that the human element of this endeavour not be overlooked. Despite what some economists may say about the functioning of markets, social justice must remain one of the main purposes of govern- ments. And, constitutionalism which provides institutional reliability and accountability upon which sustained development depends.

Abstract

Our national commitment can be seen through three phases, namely in the early days of independence, in the New Order era, and in the Reform Era. Our national commitment at the beginning of the independen- ce is scratched as negative-defensive nationalism force, when it was faced with a common enemy from outside (colonization). Our national commit- ment in the New Order era is marked by making economy as the comman- der in terms of growth, stability and centralization of power, bringing a variety of inequality. The most striking, there is lack of harmony between the national and statehood character. National multicultural character of Indonesia was denied by the centralized nature of waking state. Imbalance between central and local government with denial of political, social, eco- nomic and cultural rights of local communities. Meanwhile, the national commitment in the Reformation Era is characterized by openness and free- dom of public space that brings euphoria for the expression of marginalized identities. Efforts to bring diversity of expression "plural monoculturalism" into the situation of "multi-culturalism"—with willingness of being differen- ce (pluralism) and willingness of being united (cosmopolitanism)— requires a new solidarity framework, which is based on the premises of political na- tionalism based on rationality, volunteerism and shared prosperity.
