Abstract

This article will see the problem of pluralism through multi- dimensional approach. The plural society is not only the characteristic of modern industrial society, but also the characteristic of Islamic society, since the Prophet (PBUH) era. Normatively, al-Quran clearly rejects the exclusif way of life. In todays life, admitting diversity but having no will to create harmony will cause an unendless problem. Pluralism is the divine design which must be applied in manner and action. This must not stop in the discourse, but more practical. Human being is not merely a homo pluralist, who appreciate the diversity, but homo multiculturalist, who believe that in a plural relation there must be build real actions based on equality and justice.

Abstract

In this short research the writer wants to see Islam and social transformation based on Kuntowijoyo’s perspectives. He looks at the im- portance of cultural democracy, besides political and economical demo- cracy. He apprehends the symptom of “refeodalization” or “neofeodali- zation” which causes cultural symbols often being used as domination means from the higher structure with mythical sanctions. In this situation Islam comes with its solution i.e collective sentiments in the internal struc- ture of ummah, under something immatery namely faith ‘iman’.

Abstract

Our nation moral crisis is closely related to our incapability to do what so-called “expanding the circle” in the moral deliberation today. The corruptors and black merchants in some way are the people who want to “feed” their family, and it means also the “extended family”. So, we are too naive if judge them as a group of egoistic people. Yet, we can say that they suffer a moral “myopia”. Their solitude horizon is very narrow. They only think the goodness of their near surrounsings. Their horizon does not reach the “nation area” or “national interest”, let alone “human being” and “the future of people,” “ecological care.”

Abstract

Changes always happen in this earth. Hence, this article wants to show how the nation needs a change. SBY-Boediono government is very weak and merely does not have firm sociological roots. Today government is like “Sand House” which is bound by image glue. Now, that image glue gradually melts after having given “deceit stamp” by some prominent religious figures, intelectuals, movement figures, workers, youths and students, and scandals involving the ruling party. Therefore, the fate of the Image Order will soon come to an end. The sand house will collapse, and it will not leave crucial problems, let alone ideological matters.

Abstract

At the heart of the matter in diversity, the balancing of minority interests with the majority requires ingenuous commitment from both sides as represented by their respective community leaders. Religious strife of whatever denomination or faith would seriously undermine the very foundation of constitutional democracy. There is therefore much sense in the saying that the empowerment of one cultural group at the expense of another in any society would only lead to a clash of interests. This clash if left unchecked would threaten the essential overlapping consensus, recogni- zed as a central feature of the kind of democracy that we are talking about.

Abstract

This paper explains a brief examination of a milestone in global recent push for environmental protection, the world-renown ‘four’ big pollution diseases of Japan, and their use inside country’s development assistance. This branch of foreign policy was selected because of its exceptional potential to disseminate country’s voice, ideal niche for experience to be heralded, and opportunity to actually prevent similar catastrophes in other countries, thanks to its access to resources and political leverage. Experience is an overtly accepted source of lessons but, as a social phenomenon, it is not static. This essay is an examination of the use of the ‘four’ big pollution diseases experience inside Japanese initiatives on international aid, looking for the changes in understanding such tragic events. Attention is placed on the elements introduced and the nuances of meaning among them. The period reviewed, from the late 80’s to 2005, indicates a positive movement of the official view towards a comprehensive recognition of the history, not without voids and pending challenges.
