English Focus was launched with the intention to make quality research output available for scholars in the field of language education. Although the focus is primarily on research on language education, we will also consider papers in other areas of applied linguistics such as language testing as far as they have clear implications for language teaching/learning. Reviews of the literature are not acceptable for this Journal; however, status papers by experts in the field are called for as long as explicit implications are drawn in favor of language teaching and learning. English Focus (p-ISSN: 2614-638X and e-ISSN: 2614-6355) is an open access academic, scholarly peer-reviewed journal and follows a double-blind review policy. The Journal is scheduled for publication semiannually, in July and December, with the first issue to appear in December 2017.

Abstract

The aimed of this study was to analyze the effect of lecturer?s competencies and learning environment on students? motivation in learning English. This study used a verification method which used explanatory survey and correlation analysis with saturation sampling technique.  The population of the study was the students of the social and political faculty at Universitas Pancasakti Tegal which amounts to 91 students. Primary data collection was done through the questionnaire which was distributed to respondents in this study. Data was analyzed through descriptive analysis, classical assumption test, and multiple regressions. The result of the simultaneous test indicated there was the significant effect of lecturer?s competence, learning environment and student?s motivation in learning English. Lecturer?s competence according to respondents was high, but the lecturers should always improve their pedagogic, personality, social and professional competencies. The university should provide a conducive learning environment and adequate teaching and learning facilities.

Abstract

English is an International language which is used by so many people to interact with people from other countries. Good English ability is needed by students to support learning process and working after the students graduate from university. Grammar is a point of language. By knowing and understanding correct grammar, so, their English is better. The aim of this research was to give proposal of English learning to improve students' grammar ability. The method used was students? center learning using presentation in the class. The materials were simple present and perfect, future simple tense, modal, comparative, and passive voice. This research was conducted on 33 students in ITATS. The result of this research was 87% of students got to increase score for post-test and 30% of students passed the score. Thus, students? center learning method was effective to increase students' grammar ability.

Abstract

Guiding is a branch of oral communication. In oral communication, guiding can be included as productive skill. English guiding is one of the academic lessons in the fourth semester. Being a tour guide is a very important job in tourism part. In many cases, the tour guide is a traveller's first impression of a foreign country. In other cases a tour guide may be responsible for teaching tourists about the culture and sites in a city or town. Improving students? communicative skill is the goal of teaching English guiding, because the student can express themselves and know how to use language well. In the real situation in teaching guide process, lecturer cannot escape from reality. It occurs because there are some problems faced by the lecture and the student. The lecturer cannot make student pay attention; make the students? lack of creativity in making interactive guiding topics, and engagement in whole teaching learning process. This research applied photovoice as a technique to increase the student?s ability in speaking English guiding. Photovoice is suitable technique in teaching speaking skill in English guiding because it gives student chance to communicate with different context and different social by photo as a learning media. This reviews were taken from Beverly Palibroda (2009) Photovoice implementation and Speaking Assessment from Brown Lavinson (2004). This research was conducted by three cycles such as: pre-test, cycle I and cycle II. In composing this research the writer used qualitative descriptive method by classroom action research (CAR).             The result of this research showed that the mean score in pre-test before implementing Photovoice clearly showed that the ability of the subject under study was relatively ? fairly satisfactory ? in the level of mastery of speaking rubric. There were increasing in cycle I after implementing Photovoice technique. The result of the data analysis of the reflection score in cycle I showed increasing the mean score of 7.11 It was higher than the result of pre-test. In the cycle II, which the treatment was more intensive in order of weakness of the students had been known. The result of the data anaysis of reflection or post-test in cycle II that the mean score was 8.18. The different between mean score in cycle I and II was 1.07. It showed that the student?s speaking guiding ability improved after the researcher applied the photovoice thecnique to the students.

Abstract

This study addresses the question of the respondents ?problems in writing a research article. The participants in this study were six teachers who enrolled in the journal writing class in a university in Karawang. Three of them are ready with submission, but three others are not. The data were collected by way of two techniques: analysis of the article portfolio and interviews. The data were later codified and triangulated in order to reveal the participants? technical problems based on the research article elements and participants? psychological interference. The findings show that the respondents still had problems in achieving the communicative purposes of the journal article elements. In general their problems were in giving justifications. Their writing also tend to be failed to spot the justification of their choice of the research methodology. They still missed to fill the gap with the previous researches, missed the mark to give interpretation on the results and discussion section, and do not offer recommendation in the conclusion. Likewise, the participants also have some of psychological interference in composing and submitting their article.

Abstract

This research aims at analyzing students? descriptive writing skills that engage the academic performance among the eleventh-year-students in the academic year of 2017-2018. This research applied for the quantitative method and involved 60 students of the eleventh year students of Islamic state high school (Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1) Klaten as the respondents. Data collection used the students? descriptive writing test. Data were statistically analyzed the SPPS program to gain the descriptive analyses. The finding showed that the overall achievement of students? organization component was in the average level with 73.3% respondents, mechanics component was in the average level with 66.7% respondents, evidence component was in the average category with 46.7% respondents, and sentence structure component was in the average level with 55% respondents. The lowest score gained in descriptive writing was sentence structure (M = 2.533; SD = .700) and and the highest score was on organization component (M = 2.733; SD = .446). This research concludes that students? descriptive wrting skills laid on the average category.

Abstract

This research was done to see students? TOEFL score especially for fifth semester of Politeknik Harapan Bersama Tegal majoring Mechanical Engineering. Descriptive design using quantitative approach was chosen by the researcher. The sample is 45 students of Mechanical Engineering Study Program. The TOEFL test was used as research instrument. Descriptive statistics was used as data analysis technique, mean and percentage. The result of this research showed that student obtained problems in getting a TOEFL score with an average score 424 which was still at the basic proficiency category. The researcher found that the highest problem received by the students is listening section where student obtained correct answers only 23.7%. The students obtained the lowest score is in the short conversation with the percentage 31.27%. Then the structure and written expression, students obtained average score lowest in structure with a percentage 30.6%.
