Abstract

This research was done to see students? TOEFL score especially for fifth semester of Politeknik Harapan Bersama Tegal majoring Mechanical Engineering. Descriptive design using quantitative approach was chosen by the researcher. The sample is 45 students of Mechanical Engineering Study Program. The TOEFL test was used as research instrument. Descriptive statistics was used as data analysis technique, mean and percentage. The result of this research showed that student obtained problems in getting a TOEFL score with an average score 424 which was still at the basic proficiency category. The researcher found that the highest problem received by the students is listening section where student obtained correct answers only 23.7%. The students obtained the lowest score is in the short conversation with the percentage 31.27%. Then the structure and written expression, students obtained average score lowest in structure with a percentage 30.6%.

Abstract

Most of Mechanical Engineering students have very low interest and motivation towards English even they regard English as huge obstacle. Besides that, it is the lack of module or material of English especially for mechanical engineering. Because of this problem, English teaching in this class needs the materials or methods which is suitable for those students therefore the student learning experience is more interesting and challenging. This is the main reason why lecturers of vocational colleges especially for mechanical engineering department is expected to always explore more motivative teaching resources, although there are many handbooks or modules include CDs. In order to learn more varied, lecturers can use English material for this department that can be taken or downloaded from Youtube. So that the students can understand and improve their English vocabulary competence related to mechanical terms. This study analyzes the effects of using material taken from Youtube in the mechanical department. Using Class Action Research consist of two cycles with stages of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Both cycles use the application of learning models by Teaching English for ESP assisted by Youtube. The result of research shows that the improvement of problem solving ability in English which is very significant that is 85,21% from 30 studenst get value ?70 according to required minimum value.

Abstract

Kegiatan PKM (Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat) ini memiliki tujuan : 1) Memberikan Pengetahuan Terhadap Guru SMK Dinamika dalam Pemanfaatan Aplikas BandiCam, 2)Para Guru dapat Lebih Kreatif dalam membuat Bahan Ajar untuk media Daring, 3) Siswa lebih dapat memahami materi yang diberikan oleh Guru melalui media Daring. Metode pada kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dengan memberikan pelatihan dalam penggunaan aplikasi Bandicam dalam pembuatan bahan ajar bagi para guru SMK Dinamika Tegal. Pelatihan dilaksanakan di Ruang Guru SMK Dinamika Tegal. Hasil Kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat ini mengsilkan kesimpulan akhir sebagai berikut : 1) Peserta pelatihan memiliki keterampilan dan kemampuan untuk mengaplikasikan materi yang diberikan untuk pembuatan bahan ajar yang iteraktif, 2) Peserta akhirnya dapat membuat bahan ajar yang mudah dipahami oleh siswa karena para peserta dapat menjelaskan dengan detail dan terperinci materi yang diberikan, 3) Peserta pelatihan lebih percaya diri dapat memberikan pembelajaran kepada para murid/ siswanya dengan baik ditengah pandemic covid19 yang pembelajaran lewat daring/ tanpa tatap muka secara langsung.

Abstract

Tridharma Perguruan Tinggi adalah Pendidikan, Penelitian, dan Pengabdian Masyarakat. Salah satu kewajiban tersebut melaksanakan Pengabdian Masyarakat, hal ini dilaksanakan berkaitan dengan kepedulian setiap lembaga atau institusi yang bergerak dibidang Pendidikan, khususnya tentang Peningkatan Kompetensi Siswa dan Guru SMK Dinamika Kota Tegal Tentang Pemanfaatan Program Komputasi Matematika Geogebra dalam rangka menguasai materi matematika, khususnya latihan soal-soal ujian Nasional dengan penyelesaian alternatif. Program  komputer  yang  kini tersedia secara luas dan gratis di internet adalah Geogebra. Menggunakannya pun relatif mudah, sehingga hanya dengan pelatihan minimal guru dan siswa akan bisa menggunakannya. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan dalam rangka meningkatkan pengetahuan dan kemampuan guru dan siswa dalam bidang matematika. Dari hasil kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat diperoleh kesimpulan sebagai berikut : (1) Adanya peningkatan pengetahuan dan kemampuan dalam menggunakan aplikasi komputer bagi siswa khususnya tentang matematika menggunakan teknologi komputasi khususnya dengan program Geogebra; (2)Kegiatan Pelatihan Komputasi Geogebra di SMK Dinamika Kota Tegal dapat meningkatkan motivasi karena dianggap mudah dan sebagai alternatif untuk mengetahui jawaban akhir dengan benar. DOI: https://doi.org/10.26905/abdimas.v3i0.2674

Abstract

The activity of speaking or known as public speaking is a scary thing for students. Although they are often asked to practice presentations in front of the class, the technique of delivering public speaking is often not paid attention to. There are several techniques that should be mastered in public speaking so that the delivery can be conveyed well to the audience. This time, the implementation of PKM aims to provide knowledge about public speaking skills, improve speaking skills, mentally prepare students to speak in front of crowds, and equip students to enter lectures or work.  The method presented in this activity is lecture and practice.with 20 students from SMK Bina Nusa Slawi. Students are also provided with modules to make it easier when delivering and students can also repeat the material at home. Students are also given directions regarding the correct way of presentation in Indonesian and English in accordance with the rules of public speaking. In addition to theory and practice in the classroom. Students are also directed to observe several public speaking figures through Youtube channel. In general, community service activity at SMK Bina Nusa Slawi are going well. Students' enthusiasm is extraordinary, as evidenced by the fact that 80 percent of students believe that having public speaking skills and increasing self-confidence are important. Students feel helped by this activity because they gain knowledge about public speaking and presentation techniques that can be used to support presentations in class or as a provision for later in the world of work.

Abstract

Abstract. This study is intended to determine the factors that cause student anxiety in speaking in English, and solutions to overcome this anxiety. This research was carried out at the vocational campus Harapan Bersama Polytechnic in 11 study programs with 177 participants. This research used qualitative method. The data were collected using questionnaires and interviews. The results of the questionnaire analysis show that the highest cause of anxiety is non-teacher feedbacks and the solution to overcome the anxiety problem is individual preferences. In addition, based on the interview analysis, the cause of anxiety was the influence of regional dialect spoken in northern Java coastal areas (Tegal, Brebes, Slawi, Pemalang, Bumiayu, Cirebon). Lecturers and educational institutions must consider the curriculum and students’ psychological condition, so it is hoped that it can reduce students’ anxiety level.Keywords:  problem solution; psychological condition; speaking anxiety        Abstrak. Penelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk mengetahui faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan kecemasan mahasiswa dalam berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris, dan solusi untuk mengatasi kecemasan tersebut. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di kampus vokasi Politeknik Harapan Bersama di 11 program studi dengan 177 subjek. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan kuesioner dan wawancara. Hasil analisis kuesioner menunjukkan bahwa penyebab kecemasan tertinggi adalah tidak adanya koreksi dari dosen, dan solusi untuk mengatasi masalah kecemasan tersebut adalah preferensi individu. Selain itu, berdasarkan analisis wawancara, penyebab kegelisahan adalah pengaruh dialek daerah, yaitu dialek pesisir Jawa bagian utara (Tegal, Brebes, Slawi, Pemalang, Bumiayu, Cirebon). Dosen dan institusi pendidikan harus mempertimbangkan kurikulum dan kondisi psikologis mahasiswa, sehingga diharapkan dapat mengurangi tingkat kecemasan mahasiswa.Kata kunci: solusi masalah; kondisi psikologis; kecemasan berbicara

Abstract

Audio-Visual-Aids (AVA) media is a type of media that has long been acknowledged as a teaching aid in foreign language contexts. However, its uses are varied greatly from teacher to teacher depending on the content, inventiveness, classroom needs, and benefits approaches in language learning. Thus, the current research focused on the investigation of the analysis of vocabulary acquisition in the form of nouns and word spellings. In addition, the researcher also determined the influences of the use of the media on learners’ attitudes. A quantitative pre-experimental research approach in a one-group pre-test post-test design was performed involving 35 participants. AVA media was given within four meetings in the form of PowerPoint slides completed with original audio dubbing and fifteen images representing “Things in My Room”. To get further looks at their attitude, the participants also completed a questionnaire responding to 4 Likert Scales regarding their experiences. The analysis was reported to find out the average scores and initial hypotheses using a t-test on two main focuses with a 0.05 significance level. Findings showed a positive significant difference in the average scores of students’ vocabulary acquisition in the pre-test (7.66) and post-test (12.37) or 12.37 7.66. Scores of the tcoun reached higher than the ttable or 18,56438 2,021. Most of the students agreed and strongly agreed, that learning with AVA media brought some benefits to their learning experiences, particularly in the context of Vocabulary Acquisition.

Abstract

In this study, researchers examined how the implementation of the ESCO method combined with video material media in improving the ability to write English procedure text. This study belongs to Class Action Research. The data analysis method used descriptive quantitative method. The respondents in this study were 44 first-year students of the Applied Bachelor of Public Sector Accounting department of Polytechnic Harapan Bersama who were gathered in one class and given the same treatment. The data were collected using a pretest-posttest assessment and a questionnaire. The data obtained in the form of a pre-test and post-test were analysed to see if there was an increase in the student's ability to write procedural texts. The analysis of the pre-test and post-test scores was combined with the students’ questionnaire which contained students’ opinions regarding the implementation of the ESCO method as a learning method. The results of this study indicated that there is an increase in the student's ability to write procedural texts in English as an improvement between their pre-test and post-test scores.

Abstract

Research conducted is a type of experimental research that has the following objectives: (1) to know the correlation between the learning achievement of students who use the discovery learning method and the conventional method in the applied math course , (2) to know the level of effectiveness of student outcomes using conventional and discovery learning methods, (3) to know the level of effectiveness of student of learning results by using the discovery learning method and conventional methods. The research conducted has a population of D3 Mechanical Engineering study program students in Semester 2 Academic Year 2022/2023 Harapan Bersama PolytechnicSamples taken using grade 2A and 2C randomly where the two gradees with the division of grade 2A is the experiment grade and grade 2C is the control grade. The series of processes in the research method consists of preliminary tests, namely validity, reliability, difficulty level, and question differentiation. After being given the learning treatment, then analyzed by statistical tests. The results of the analysis provide an overview the results that in an experimental grade with an average result of 78 and a control grade with average results. Result of 62, then a statistical test is obtained  sedangkan  from the analysis results, it can be concluded that students who get treatment with the discovery learning method get better learning outcomes than the class that does not. do not get discovery learning treatment.
