Abstract

This research aimed to develop learners’ autonomy in English as Foreign Language (EFL) writing class, in particular, it was applying self-assessment. It enabled learners to raise their awareness in learning and to improve the goal orientation. The research also helped teachers to reduce their burdens of assessment and entailed a long-term effect on the learner’s autonomy. The objective of this research was to figure out student attitudes in developing a self-assessment model of genre-based writing class. Quantitative and qualitative analysis were utilized to draw the findings of this research. It was conducted at the English Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training, Pancasakti University in the even semester of the academic year 2016/2017. The data were collected from a questionnaire, classroom observation, and focus group discussions. The results of this research present students’ problems, perceptions, and needs toward the teaching and learning process of genre-based writing classes attended as preliminary research to develop a self-assessment model of EFL writing.

Abstract

The aimed of this study was to analyze the effect of lecturer?s competencies and learning environment on students? motivation in learning English. This study used a verification method which used explanatory survey and correlation analysis with saturation sampling technique.  The population of the study was the students of the social and political faculty at Universitas Pancasakti Tegal which amounts to 91 students. Primary data collection was done through the questionnaire which was distributed to respondents in this study. Data was analyzed through descriptive analysis, classical assumption test, and multiple regressions. The result of the simultaneous test indicated there was the significant effect of lecturer?s competence, learning environment and student?s motivation in learning English. Lecturer?s competence according to respondents was high, but the lecturers should always improve their pedagogic, personality, social and professional competencies. The university should provide a conducive learning environment and adequate teaching and learning facilities.

Abstract

This study focused on three kinds of item analysis towards the test items of the achievement tests. The validity and reliability were also provided as supporting functions. This study used quantitative data for the data source and some qualitative explanation to elaborate on the data. To gain the data analysis, the test papers and students answers sheets were collected from three achievement tests of SHS X, SHS Y, and SHS Z. Also, the first-grade students of those schools were as the sample of this study. The study revealed (1) the mean of item facility of three achievement tests categorized as medium test items (SHS X= 0,69; SHS Y= 0,55; and SHS Z= 0,44), while the mean of item discrimination of SHS X examined as good items (0,326) and the mean of item discrimination of SHS Y, SHS Z analyzed as satisfactory items (SHS Y= 0,245; and SHS Z= 0,244). Moreover, half of the distractor efficiency of those tests were accepted. Also, the validity and reliability of the achievement tests were found. Thus, it can be summarized that the achievement tests need to be improved since there are some items have high item facility and low item discrimination.

Abstract

Pembelajaran daring di tahun pertama memunculkan berbagai permasalahan bagi mitra, diantaranya kesulitan dalam mencari platform yang sesuai dengan capaian pembelajaran, kesulitan dalam melakukan edukasi terhadap aplikasi e-learning yang dipilih, serta terkait teknis pembelajaran. Mitra dalam kegiatan ini adalah para instruktur Bahasa Inggris di LKP Kabupaten Tegal. Tujuan kegiatan ini adalah meningkatkan keterampilan mitra menggunakan e-learning, menambah kreatifitas, dan mengidentifikasi muatan nilai dan keterampilan didalamnya. Solusi yang ditawarkan pengusul kepada mitra terkait permasalahan-permasalahan tersebut yaitu, memberi pelatihan mengenai jenis platform pendidikan agar mitra mampu menentukan jenis platform yang sesuai dengan capaian pembelajaran yang dituju. Tim pengusul juga memberi pendampingan secara rutin dan terstruktur terkait sosialisasi dan edukasi penggunaan platform e-learning di kelas-kelas mitra. Terkait kesulitan teknis pembelajaran yang mitra hadapi, tim menggandeng pakar IT untuk mengatasinya. Metode pelaksanaan terkait dengan pelatihan e-learning adalah dengan melakukan workshop. Pada tahap ini mitra tidak hanya diberi pengetahuan mengenai jenis platform Pendidikan, tetapi juga melakukan praktik langsung. Sedang untuk edukasi di kelas nyata mitra, tim pengusul melakukan safari virtual di kelas-kelas mitra. Terkait teknis pembelajaran, tim melibatkan pakar IT untuk menaikkan bandwith, memilih provider, dan mendesain strategi promosi melalui media sosial. Melalui upaya dan strategi tersebut diharapkan dapat meningkatkan daya saing mitra.

Abstract

In an attempt to increase reading performance at university level. This study aims at perceiving the experiential determinants of EFL students’ online reading performance. Data were collected from 182 undergraduate students’ self-rated questionnaire based on the assigned Indonesian folklores in English version through the online reading platforms. Data analysis used descriptive statistics and factor analysis. The results showed that EFL students’ reading habits and reading frequencies and trends were very supportive, whilst reading effectiveness and reading for pleasure supported their reading performance. Tests of chi-square’s four variables were statistically significant indicating the proportional majority of online reading activity. Meanwhile, the Principal Components Analysis (PCA) indicated two components and variables under the eigenvalues’ square root. The interpretation of two components was coherent with the pilot results on the online reading readability scale, analyzed the use of positive and negative affect items as undertaken from the pattern and structure matrix for PCA with the Obliging rotation. EFL students’ online reading is engaging accordingly since students accomplished their reading performance based on individual accessibilities and habits to understand the contents of genres. This study concludes that EFL students’ online reading performance has been practically facilitated by the technology devices multiply. Hence, four online reading variables increased EFL students’ reading awareness and performance accordingly.

Abstract

A process approach is usually employed in the classroom instruction of academic writing, particulary essay writing, in the Indonesian colleges or universities. This study investigates the role of teacher and peer feedback inserted in the steps of writing process on students’ writing achievement. It is an experimental research conducted at the English Education Department of Pancasakti University Tegal Central Java Indonesia, in the seven semester of the  academic year 2015/2016. The participants of this study are 40 students who attended essay writing class. The instrument is essay writing test which was administered before and after treatment to both experimental and control group. By using paired-sample t-test and f-test, it was found that the use of teacher and peer feedback were effective to teach essay writing. Such a technique contributed a significant improvemental to the students writing achievement in the experimental group. The result also showed that the writing achievement of the students in the experimental group was better than that of those in the control group. To conclude,  utilizing teacher and peer feedback is considered to be one of the effective ways for the students in learning essay writing. However, some drawbacks were found that need to be taken into account in the next related researches.Keywords: Teacher feedback, peer feedback, essay writing

Abstract

Abstract: This self-assessment model is developed to help EFL students improve their achievement in academic writing, more particularly essay writing. In English department of Pancasakti University Tegal, academic writing is the course subject which develops models and practices of essay writing in order that students are actively engaged in rhetorical problem-solving. The development of this self-assessment model was derived from the analysis of both theoretical and empirical studies of self-assessment in EFL writing. The self-assessment model developed in this study  consists of four kinds of self-assessment instruments: self-edit checklist of writing dimensions (CWD), checklist of writing strategies (CWS), survey questionnaire of writing interest and awareness (SWIA), and questionnaire of learning monitoring strategies (QLMS). This self-assessment model can be an alternative model in teaching academic writing to EFL students at university level, more particularly the students of English Department, Pancasakti University Tegal.Keywords: self-assessment model, academic writing, Indonesian EFL learners

Abstract

Teaching EFL reading to the students at colleges or universities requires an appropriate technique that enables students to enhance their achievement as well as to develop their sense of independent learning. This is also to respond to the current trend of that the focus of ELT today is creating learners who are not only competent but also dependent or autonomous in learning. This study is aimed at exploring the needs of both lecturers and students on EFL reading class. The method used was descriptive-qualitative. It was conducted at the English Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Pancasakti University Tegal, from April to June 2018. The participants of this study were 64 students of the fourth semester in the department attending EFL reading class and 4 EFL lecturers. The data were collected using triangulation. The instruments used were a questionnaire, classroom observation, and interview. The results showed that the instruction and assessment were still teacher-centered, the learning materials and the method did not meet the students’ needs, the selection of the materials was not in line with the students’ level of competence, the students were given fewer opportunities to explore and share their ideas with others, etc. The result also showed that both students and lecturers agreed that learning EFL reading through self-assessment could be an alternative learning model or technique to cope with the situations.Keywords: needs analysis; EFL reading; learner autonomy; self-assessment.

Abstract

The fact that most of the students in Junior High School are lack of vocabulary, lazy in reading a long text and low motivation in reading textbooks can be solved by choosing an appropriate method in teaching reading. The aimed of this research was to find out whether the probing-prompting technique was effective for the students' reading achievement. The word “Probing” means research and explore, meanwhile “prompting” means push and guide. In probing-prompting, students are required to answer the question by their own words or sentences. Two groups design was applied, and the participants were eighth students of Junior High School in Tegal. We used reading testing in collecting the data, pre and post-test were conducted. And the data analysis calculated using SPSS program.  Based on data analysis using an independent sample t-test, it was revealed that the t-test was higher than t-table (4.332>1.672). We state a conclusion; the use of probing prompting technique is effective because students who taught using probing-prompting technique perform better achievement on reading.

Abstract

Metode guessing game menuntut peserta didik untuk mencari banyak kosakata untuk menjelaskan sesuatu objek seperti benda, hewan ,tumbuhan dan manusia. Tujuan dari penelitian iniadalah untukmengetahui apakahmetodeGuessingGamemempengaruhihasil belajar speaking skill padapeserta didik kelas tujuhdiSMP negeri di Kecamatan Jatibarang..Untukmengumpulkan data,peneliti menggunakantes,observasidandocumentasi.Untukmemperolehdata peserta didik, peniliti menggunakan testertulis dan bentuk pilihan ganda.Dalam penelitian ini peneliti menggunakan jenis penelitian kuantitatif.PenelitimenggunakanrumusChi-squaredanT-testuntuk menganalisisdata.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Chi kwadrat hitung = 2,3, dibandingkan dengan Chi kwadrat tabel dengan dk(derajad Kebebasan) 6-1=5 , dan taraf kesalahan 5%, pada tabel = 11,07, Terbukti data Chi Kwadrat hitung< Chi kwadrat tabel (2,3< 11,07), maka Distribusi data hasil Post tes adalah Normal. Selanjutnya hasil analisis data pre test dengan post test dengan rumus t-tes diperoleh T-hitung > T tabel ( 7,926 > 5,991) (5%),lebihbesar.
