Abstract

This research is motivated by data showing the influence of social media on language politeness in adolescents. The objectives to be achieved in this study include: (1) Knowing whether social media has an effect on adolescent politeness in language through public perception (2) Knowing how social media influences adolescent language politeness (3) providing references for readers regarding the study of the influence of social media and language politeness. This research was conducted through a survey that was distributed through social media and had the participation of 45 people. The results of the study show how social media has an effect on reducing politeness in language in adolescents. From the data obtained, it can be recommended to the audience that social media can have an effect on adolescent language politeness.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the lexicons and the cultural meaning in the costumes of the Baris Gede dance. Baris Gede dance is a traditional Balinese dance that tells about warriors fighting on the battlefield. Costumes are an important component in the Baris Gede dance because the costumes used represent the contents of the dance. This research used qualitative research with interviews and observation as the method to obtain the data. The researcher found 14 lexicons in the costumes; head costume (1 lexicon) that is gelungan, neck costume (1 lexicon) which is badong/bapang, hand costume (1 lexicon) which is gelang kana, upper body costume (7 lexicons) which are awiran, oncer, lamak, kwace selem, tali semayut, keris, and urangka and lower body costume (4 lexicons) that are stewel, jaler putih, kancut putih, and sabuk. The cultural meaning relates to the soldiers on the battlefield. Warriors are depicted as dashing and brave figures represented through the Baris Gede dance costume.

Abstract

This study intends to determine teachers’ challenges in teaching English using technological media, namely the Canva application. in this study, researchers used qualitative descriptive methods. An SMK N 2 Singaraja teacher participated in this study because he implemented the Canva application as a learning medium to meet the current educational system. According to (Titiyanti et al., 2022), With the help of Canva, teachers may provide a one-of-a-kind opportunity for students to engage their abilities and motivation in learned material. To get the data, the researcher used the semi-structured interview method as a data instrument for data collecting. The results of this study state that Canva media is very suitable for learning English because it can improve students’ ability to write, creativity, critical thinking, and motivation to learn. However, the teacher cannot trace this application, so the teacher cannot see the students’ work process in making brochures.

Abstract

Teaching for student flourishing is part of social justice education, which highlights positive changes in society through education. It opens a space for teachers, English language teachers in particular, to accommodate different backgrounds and characteristics of students, from which it gives them opportunities to flourish. However, teaching within this perspective is not that easy. The English teachers face a number of problematic challenges during the teaching learning activities. They need to find the ways to overcome these challenges. This paper aims to determine the challenges faced by the English teachers and gives some insights on how to surmount the problems. It employs a qualitative study, and argues that the English teachers have some challenges in teaching English for a flourishing life of students. They need to concern identifying the challenges and figure out the ways to solve it.

Abstract

The target of speaking skills is difficult to achieve in junior high school, since instruction and learning of speaking can present certain challenges for teachers and students. Therefore, this study aims to explore how storytelling affects students' speaking skills and how they feel about using storytelling technique. This research was conducted in class VIII Kefamenanu middle school. This current research utilized classroom action research in which interview and observation were the instruments to use in obtaining necessary data. The mean score from the results of the implementation of the first cycle test was 59.67 and 75.21 for the second cycle, which experienced an increase. Thus, the result indicated that storytelling technique was an effective way to upgrade students’ speaking skill. In addition, storytelling techniques allow the students to speak more clearly and they also gain more confidence in practicing their English.

Abstract

AbstractNelayan dance is one of the classical dances in Bali that have high cultural value. Nelayan dance has unique and varied lexicons to study. Usually, the lexicons in Nelayan dance will be used during dance practice. However, due to the development of the times, the use of the lexicon in the Nelayan dance is decreasing. This study aims to collect the lexicon that exists in the Nelayan dance. This research was designed in a descriptive qualitative form using an ecolinguistic approach. The object of this research is the lexicon of movements in the Nelayan dance, including the cultural meanings of each of the lexicons. The subjects of this study were three informants who had extensive knowledge of the arts. The data from this study were obtained by conducting observations and interviews at the Sanggar Seni Manik Uttara. The results of this study indicate that the total lexicon movements in Nelayan dance are 55 lexicons which are divided into six types, such as head movements (4 lexicons), eye movements (5 lexicons), neck movements (2 lexicons), hand movements (22 lexicons), body movements (14 lexicons), and leg movements (8 lexicons). Based on those lexicons, the cultural meaning found in lexicons’ movements is 28 lexicons.Keywords: Lexicons, nelayan dance, ecolinguistics, movements, language death

Abstract

In the post-COVID-19 pandemic era, the learning style of young learners has changed from online learning to blended learning. It means that young learners must adapt to face-to-face and online learning. It also causes the teacher to prepare on how to make effective blended learning, which demands the teacher to prepare the learning material both in face-to-face and online learning. In addition, in teaching young English learners, especially young learners, the learning media used must be exciting and compelling. Currently, the use of animation videos is constructive for young learners during the COVID-19 pandemic because the contents are delivered to keep them learning even if they learn independently. This study aims to delve into the teachers’ and students’ perceptions of the use of animation videos by Animaker as learning media in blended learning in the post-pandemic era. This study used a descriptive qualitative method explained through in-depth interviews with two teachers and ten EFL students in an elementary school. The result explained that audio-visual media in the form of animation videos by Animaker effectively to be used in blended learning. Because the animation videos were attractive, the students were motivated to learn. The implementation was also flexible that could be learned anytime and anywhere. However, some platform limitations, such as limited export time and limited characters used for free users, became a disadvantage. This article is expected to help teachers develop engaging learning media that motivate young learners.

Abstract

Students' perceptions towards teachers strategies  in teaching reading skills are also important to know by teachers, so that they can be used as reflections to improving their strategies in teaching reading. This research different between some previous study because the focus in the some previous is more generally because analyze about students’ perception towards teachers attitude, teaching style and attitude in learning English. Meanwhile, in this research is more specifically because analyze about students’ perception towards teachers strategies and only focus in reading skill. In previous study use a quantitative method but in this study use a qualitative method. The aim of this study was to find out how students' perceptions towards teachers strategies in teaching reading skills.The participants in this study were eleventh grade students at SMAI MU Jatiurip. This study used interviews, observation and documentation to obtain data.The result  showed that students’ perception towards teacher’s strategies in teaching reading at SMAI MU  Jatiurip is give had positive percepatan with all of the teaching strategies in teaching reading. They are predicting, question and generating and answering, role plays and think pair share except summarizing strategy because they feel boring about learning reading material when the teacher used summarizing strategy. The most of students prefer to predicting strategy because students understand lessons more quickly when using predicting strategies.

Abstract

 Academic stress is one of the things that are often experienced by students during the teaching and learning process, especially in English. This study aims to find out the factors that cause students academic stress in English subject. The research data was collected by distributing questionnaires to the tenth-grade students of SMA Nurul Jadid and interviewing three students in the superior language class of SMA Nurul Jadid who experienced academic stress high level. This study uses qualitative research, which uses a narrative inquiry approach. Based on the result findings and discussion in the previous chapter, the researcher concludes that there are three students in the tenth grade of SMA Nurul Jadid who experience academic stress in English subjects. The researcher found two factors that students in the tenth grade of superior language experienced academic stress, namely: internal factors and external factors. Internal factors include wrong mindset and low mentality. While the external factors are: busy class schedule, high achievement demand, and the friendship factor.

Abstract

This study aims to identify students' perceptions and expectations of English Phonetics and Phonology learning, and whether the learning process in this course meets students' needs and expectations for mastering English pronunciation. This research is conducted at the English department of Universitas Negeri Gorontalo, by taking English Department students as research subjects. Students' perceptions and expectations regarding the English phonetics and phonology course are described using a qualitative method gleaned from student interviews. The interviews show students' perceptions of the English phonetics and phonology course that the process of learning the subject is enjoyable, the lecturer's teaching method aids students to comprehend the course material, and the course material was well-explained. While the findings of interviews on students' perceptions of the impact of studying English phonetics and phonology on their English pronunciation show that through this course students gain a better understanding of phonetics symbols, are able to recognize and distinguish various English sounds, are capable of producing language sounds with the proper use of speech organs, can correctly apply stress and intonation to English words and sentences, and improve their English pronunciation. Finally, students have expectations about the teaching and learning of English phonetics and phonology, such as lecturers should use more interesting teaching techniques, provide more practice to students, and ensure students comprehend the lesson learned before class ends.
