Abstract

Al-Mashduqiah Plus Junior High School is one of the boarding school that develops foreign language skills as an attempt to prepare young people to be able to compete in the global world. In fact, the language learners (students) still often mix the structure of their first language into English to write. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the language interference in the students’ English writing assignment, and what factors behind them. The research used descriptive qualitative. The results showed that the form of interference in Al- Mashduqiah Plus Junior High School is morphological and syntactical structure. Besides, these interferences are caused by several factors; they are structural and non-structural factors. The structural factors include the difference of linguistics systems in native language and the targeted language. The non-structural factors include the learners’ bilingualism, language loyalty, the inadequate vocabulary of learners’ language, and the habits of using mother tongue language. This research is expected to provide information to students, teachers, and researchers so that they can find learning innovations that can improve the quality of foreign language skills.

Abstract

The study successfully investigates how students' writing abilities are affected by feedback on written grammar that is specifically customized to their auditory learning preferences. It was designed to find a better method for enhancing auditory learners' writing skills. The results show that tailored grammatical feedback that takes into account auditory learning preferences produces better results in improving writing abilities than traditional input. When given individualized feedback, auditory learners improved their writing skills more. The study highlights the value of teaching approaches that take into account students' chosen styles of learning, especially when it comes to developing writing abilities. It advises using tactics that are in line with learners' preferences into educational design. The study opens the door for future research into alternate ways that make use of adaptable methods and educational technology to improve student learning. Longitudinal studies can also shed light on the long-term effects of tailored learning strategies that are in line with student preferences. In parallel, the larger educational community studies how various learning styles and pedagogies interact. By continuously enhancing curricula and teaching methods, this study helps to maximize achievement in a variety of educational environments. Overall, this study offers implications for enhancing educational procedures and encouraging top-notch student achievement

Abstract

The use of online reading materials to improve students’ reading comprehension achievement is highly recommended. Online reading is separate from reading printed texts since it involved reading digital content such as e-books, e-dictionaries, web pages, and online education. As a result, the study's objectives were to look into the use of online reading resources to help pupils enhance their reading comprehension and to determine whether there is a substantial mean difference between pupils who had been instructed utilizing online materials for reading compared to those who were not. The quasi-experimental design was employed to evaluate the pretest and posttest results in the experimental and control groups. The 70 students were selected and put into two groups on purpose. There were 35 pupils in the experimental group and 35 students in the control group. In addition, pretest, posttest and students’ perception were used to collect the data. The data were analyzed using the SPSS v.25 program and the t-test (paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test). The paired sample t-test result in the experimental group is 9,420> t-table (df=34) is 1.690 at 0.05 The significance threshold was 0.000 0.05, and the sig. (2-tailed) was 0.000 0.05. It was reasonable to establish that students' reading comprehension achievement improved significantly after being taught utilizing online reading materials at SMP Tri Dharma Palembang. Furthermore, the independent sample t-test result The resulting t-value is 20.075> t-table (df=68) is 1.667 at the significant threshold of 0.05 and sig. (2-tailed) is 0.000 0.05. It signifies that there was a statistically significant difference in mean comparing the experimental and control groups. The findings demonstrated that Online reading materials were useful in boosting students' reading comprehension achievement at SMP Tri Dharma Palembang in the academic year 2022/2023.

Abstract

This study presents an interpersonal metafunction analysis of smartphone slogans. Since the smartphone has been extensively commercialized, companies create different slogans for every single edition. Though it is usually formulated in short-purposive phrases and does not straightforwardly magnetize purchasers, the slogan is a form of language to support a market campaign. Slogans are usually embodied in clauses or sentences; part of grammar; a “system of wordings” (Matthiessen and Halliday: 1997). The Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) approach was conducted to scrutinize the realization of the lexicogrammar level revealed through MOOD’s interpersonal meaning. By using the descriptive qualitative method, SFL, and UAM CorpusTool,  it was found that the realization of MOOD in this study shown in percentage; declarative clause 6,4% or N=51; interrogative clause 0,1% or N=1; and imperative clause 3,4% or N=27. This result, it shows that the declarative clause is the most frequently used in creating smartphone slogans, to provide information and offering products at once. It can be concluded that from selected smartphone slogans, predominantly, companies shows that they have a wider knowledge of the products through delivering, informing, offering, demanding, and commanding customers. Ergo, success in acknowledging their prospective customers about their products’ eminence will attract customers.

Abstract

This study focuses on the development of speaking tests through project-based learning in procedure text material. The study aims to assess students' speaking abilities by integrating project-based learning into the teaching and learning process. The research follows a research and development (R&D) method, adapting the research cycle proposed by Borg & Gall (1981) and simplifying it into eight stages: (1) Research and Information Gathering (2) Development of the Initial Product (3) Expert Validation (4) Revision (5) Product Trial (6) Revision (7) Field Trial (8) Final Product. The data were collected through a questionnaire. Based on preliminary research and information collection results, the students have difficulty speaking, mainly due to a lack of enthusiasm and the use of learning strategies. Based on the expert’s comments, the developed speaking strategy was generally good and eligible to be used as a strategy for developing the speaking skills of students. So, the use of project-based learning through procedure text that emphasizes practical application and real-life contexts is well suited to optimize language learning outcomes. Overall, the developed strategy proves effective in enhancing students' speaking abilities and creating a conducive learning environment. The study justifies the importance of developing speaking tests through project-based learning due to the significance of speaking skills in language acquisition and the potential of project-based learning to create an engaging and effective learning environment.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the students difficulties in vocabulary mastery and the factors that caused their difficulties in mastering vocabulary. This research employed a qualitative approach using a phenomenology design. The data were gathered by observation, interview, and document review. Data technique and data source triangulation were used to validate the collated data. The result of this research revealed that several students had difficulties with vocabulary mastery. This study showed that, first, the difficulties encountered by students were that they had difficulties translating words or sentences in English into Indonesian and vice versa. Students also experienced difficulties in understanding the meaning of words, pronunciation, misspelling, and remembering or memorizing English vocabulary. Secondly, there were some factors that caused students difficulties in vocabulary mastery. Students were reluctant to open dictionaries and less interested in learning English. This condition became a hindrance to their ability to practice English regularly. The other issues were external factors such as inadequate facilities and the negative influence of friends that, in the end, have made it difficult to learn English, especially, vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the syntactical errors in the descriptive text writing of 10 elementary-level students at Al-Ikhlas Boarding School. This study applied a qualitative-descriptive approach. The source of data was taken from the students writing. Those descriptive texts were analyzed by classifying the errors as types of syntactical errors. From this study, the researcher found syntactical errors, namely errors in pronouns, be, plurals, and the use of the verb tense. This finding shows that EFL learners cannot completely master and apply the grammar of English in terms of syntactical function to their writing. It is influenced by factors such as interlingual and intralingual transfer. But the dominant factor in these results is interlanguage transfer. This study is supposed to be a reference for another researcher, linguist, and educator for their further study on error analysis.
