Abstract

Fragaria x ananassa or strawberry has significant economic value worldwide. However, its cultivation faces various challenges. One example was fungal diseases, such as anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum acutatum. Disease management generally relies heavily on synthetic fungicides, raising concerns about environmental sustainability and human health risks. Therefore, more environmentally friendly alternatives are needed, such as the use of biological agents. This study aims to assess the potential of endophytic fungi from strawberry plants as natural biocontrol agents against Colletotrichum acutatum. The study began with the isolation of endophytic fungi from strawberry tissues and their characterization morphologically. The antagonistic activity of endophytic fungi against colletotrichum acutatum was evaluated using three methods: a dual culture assay to assess direct inhibition, a cell-free filtrate assay to analyze the effect of fungal metabolites, and a volatile organic compound (VOC) assay to inhibit the growth of pathogenic pathogens. In this study, 20 fungal isolates were successfully isolated. A total of 15 showed antagonism against Colletotrichum acutatum. Isolate A1 showed potent inhibition in the dual culture test by effectively antagonizing Colletotrichum acutatum. Isolate D1 produced extracellular compounds that reduced the growth of Colletotrichum acutatum by 52.28% ± 3.21% in the cell-free filtrate assay. At the same time, isolate D3 proved most effective in the VOC assay, suppressing the growth of pathogenic colonies by 71.35% ± 3.37%. Thus, endophytic fungi, especially isolates A1, D1, and D3, have the potential to serve as an environmentally friendly alternative to combat anthracnose disease on strawberries.

Abstract

Machine learning is an effective tool for identifying and classifying various conditions, such as predicting shoe sales, classifying raisin types, classifying fruit productivity, and so on. This technique is widely used in various sectors. One example is pistachio sorting. In some places, pistachio sorting is still done traditionally by humans. This is disadvantageous because the costs tend to be high, and the sorting process becomes inconsistent and less effective. The use of machine learning algorithms can be a breakthrough in overcoming this problem. Naive Bayes and Classification and Regression Tree (CART) are machine learning algorithms commonly used in the classification process. To improve classification accuracy, these two basic models are integrated with the Discrete Adaptive Boosting (Discrete AdaBoost) algorithm. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of machine learning algorithms in identifying the characteristics of pistachios. Algorithm testing was carried out using the k-fold cross-validation technique. The estimated average performance results of all classification models do not show significant differences. The Discrete AdaBoost CART model has the best accuracy, specificity, and f1-score, at 86.49%, 85.78%, and 88.32%, respectively. Therefore, the Discrete AdaBoost CART model is a suitable model for classifying pistachio types. This shows that ensemble approaches such as Discrete AdaBoost CART can make a significant contribution to improving the performance of classification systems, especially in the context of data with many relevant features. This study was limited to identifying binary classes of pistachios. In further research, it is recommended to explore machine learning algorithms for multiclass of pistachio nuts.

Abstract

In many urban heritage contexts, adaptive reuse often prioritizes physical and economic transformation while neglecting the intangible dimensions that shape a site’s identity. The former campus of the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts (ASRI) in Yogyakarta, that now revitalized as the Jogja National Museum (JNM) and JNM Bloc, is a compelling case to examine how the spirit of place (genius loci) evolves in response to cultural, spatial, and functional shifts. This study aims to analyze the historical transformation and adaptive reuse of the ASRI campus and to explore the persistence or redefinition of its genius loci through the dimensions of image, space, and character. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through field observations, semi-structured interviews with stakeholders (including alumni, artists, and museum managers), and archival documentation. Data were analyzed using phenomenological interpretation, focusing on the relationships between tangible heritage, community memory, and symbolic meaning. The results show that despite commercial insertions and spatial reprogramming, the site retains its identity as an arts and cultural landmark. Key findings include the role of community actors in preserving memory, the hybridization of academic and public spaces, and the use of symbolic anchors (e.g., banyan tree, monuments) to sustain continuity. This study contributes conceptually to adaptive reuse discourse by proposing an integrated framework that links spatial adaptation with cultural memory. However, the study is limited by its single-site focus and scope of informants. Future studies are encouraged to explore comparative analyses of other culturally transformed heritage sites to gain deeper insights into experiential authenticity and the construction of place identity.

Abstract

Internal migration is a widespread phenomenon in Bangladesh, driven by social, economic, and environmental factors. This movement has profound implications for health and well-being among migratory populations. The purpose of this study is to examine the factors associated with perceiving quality of health among individuals who have migrated within Bangladesh, focusing on social support, education, food availability, occupation, and environmental conditions. Data were collected from the Bangladesh Environment and Migration Survey (BEMS), which involved 1,754 migratory families. The analyses were conducted utilizing Stata software with weighted data and the chi-squared test. The study found that the majority of the respondents perceived quality health after migration. Most migrants reported good health after receiving emotional and social support from the community, particularly those with a better educational background or who did not experience an improvement in their health status after migration. Bivariate chi-square analyses revealed that professional occupations reported the highest quality of health perceived compared to other occupations (p < .001). Regarding environmental aspects, both the perceived quality of health and health experiences changed, regardless of cyclone severity. Contrary to common belief, this study finds a weaker relationship between education, food shortages, or social support and the quality of health after migration. These findings have important implications for understanding perceived quality of health, suggesting that other factors associated with the control variables may play a more significant role. A major limitation of this study is the use of cross-sectional data, which restricts the ability to infer causal relationships between migration and perceived quality of health.

Abstract

This research develops an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) application to recognize and translate Arabic-Malay script, widely used in Bengkalis and surrounding regions. The application is designed to facilitate learning and interaction with the script through features for text recognition and translation. To enhance OCR accuracy, advanced image preprocessing techniques and a comprehensive training dataset were employed. Testing under various lighting conditions showed an average recognition accuracy of 25%. Performance was optimal under well-lit conditions, achieving 100% accuracy at 1639 lux, but accuracy significantly declined in low-light environments, particularly at 3.5 lux, where it dropped to 0%. While this result demonstrated the system’s potential, a comparison with similar OCR systems indicates significant room for improvement, particularly in recognizing complex or handwritten Arabic-Malay characters. The results highlight challenges related to lighting conditions, including variations in light sources and angles, which greatly affect recognition accuracy. Indeed, future work should focus on expanding the training dataset with diverse samples, refining preprocessing techniques such as automatic brightness adjustment, and implementing advanced machine learning models like Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). This application holds significant potential for practical uses in education, translation services, and local communication, contributing to preserving and promoting the Arabic-Malay script as part of cultural heritage in the modern era.

Abstract

Cakue Ko Atek is one of the culinary MSMEs in Jakarta that has been famous since 1971 until now. Cakue Ko Atek products have faced several challenges, especially in the packaging aspect, which still has many shortcomings, namely not having a clear product identity, using recycled paper, and being packaged with plastic, making it less attractive to consumers and having an impact on the environment. This packaging development research aims to formulate a new packaging design concept that is more aesthetic and functional but meets consumer expectations and desires. To achieve this goal, the Kansei Engineering method was applied in the process of determining the packaging concept with the aim of understanding and interpreting consumer perceptions of the ideal packaging design. The collected consumer perception data are then processed with the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method to simplify the Kansei word data and find the main components in consumer perceptions. The analysis was conducted using R software to identify relevant key design concepts based on PCA. The results of this analysis showed that there was one Principal Component (PC) with the highest standard deviation in PC 1, which amounted to 6.686, which became the basis for formulating the design concept. The resulting design concept, based on the positive and negative quadrant analysis data on PC 1, is Usable-Simple, which reflects consumer needs for packaging that is easy to use and has a simple yet effective appearance. This research only produces design concepts that are in accordance with consumer preferences and has not evaluated specific design elements that can be implemented on packaging based on the concepts that have been formulated.

Abstract

In 2011, the Government of Bangladesh launched the e-procurement system based on the e-GP guidelines. Following successful pilot testing, all public procurement entities (PPEs) began adopting e-procurement for their tendering processes. This study aims to rank eight key variables that are involved in creating a conceptual e-procurement assessment model. The research focuses on eleven zones within the Roads and Highways Department (RHD), with a sample of 206 PE officers and 145 contractors. A survey was conducted, and the data were analyzed using SPSS software to develop a multiple linear regression model, testing eight hypotheses to form the proposed e-procurement implementation assessment model for RHD. All hypotheses were confirmed, validating the model. The eight variables were ranked using Python software and the TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) method, with transparency ranked highest. The study's findings will be valuable to academics, practitioners, researchers, and relevant authorities. The novel contribution of this study is its ranking of variables to develop a thematic framework for evaluating e-procurement implementation within Bangladesh's Roads and Highways Department.

Abstract

This study investigates the utilization of waste materials, namely glass powder and eggshell powder, as partial substitutes for fine aggregate and cement in Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC). The aim is to contribute to sustainable construction practices by reducing waste and enhancing concrete performance. Experimental analysis was conducted on SCC mixtures with varying percentages of eggshell powder (ESP) and glass powder. The results demonstrated that both materials can be effectively incorporated into SCC without compromising workability, as measured by slump flow and other tests. In terms of compressive strength, the addition of glass powder resulted in a significant increase, reaching a maximum of 56.6 MPa at a 20% substitution rate. ESP also positively influenced compressive strength, with the highest value of 48.7 MPa achieved at a 15% substitution rate. Furthermore, the study observed changes in the cracking pattern of SCC with increasing percentages of ESP and glass powder. These findings highlight the potential of waste materials to enhance the mechanical properties and sustainability of SCC, providing valuable insights for future applications in the construction industry.
