Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui kondisi optimal dalam pengolahan biji jarak pagar menjadi biodiesel. Metoda penelitian yang digunakan adalah: 1) Pengaruh pemanasan pada perlakuan pendahuluan terhadap peningkatan bilangan asam dan rendeman minyak jarak; 2) Pengaruh waktu penyimpanan terhadap peningkatan bilangan asam; 3) Pengaruh antioksidan dalam menekan peningkatan bilangan asam; 4) Pengaruh degumming terhadap penurunan bilangan asam, kekentalan dan kerapatan biodiesel; 5) Pengaruh konsentrasi katalis padat terhadap penurunan bilangan asam; 6) Pengaruh persentase metanol dalam penurunan bilangan asam; 7) Analisa optimasi kondisi proses; dan 8) Analisa sifat fisika kimia minyak jarak pagar hasil proses esterifikasi.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan: 1) Biji jarak sebelum dipres perlu dikukus dahulu; 2) Selama penyimpanan minyak jarak meningkat keasamannya yaitu sebesar 0,1 digit/hari; 3) Antioksidan yang paling efektif adalah BHT pada konsentrasi 0,03%; 4) Proses degumming menurunkan bilangan asam, kekentalan dan kerapatan; 5) Konsentrasi zeolit yang optimum adalah pada konsentrasi 3%; 6) Persentase methanol optimum pada proses esterifikasi adalah 10%; 7) Hasil analisa optimasi kondisi proses menunjukkan kondisi optimum proses esterifikasi terjadi pada konsentrasi zeolit 3,1 %, waktu reaksi 121 menit dan konsentrasi metanol 11,34%, yang menghasilkan bilangan asam 3,42 mg KOH/ g; dan 8) Hasil analisa sifat fisika kimia menunjukkan perlunya kehati-hatian dalarn pengolahannya menjadi biodiesel, karena tingginya bilangan asam.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengevaluasi toksisitas formula garam tembaga-khromium-boron terhadap serangan rayap dan jamur perusak kayu. Dalam penelitian ini digunakan bahan kimia kualitas teknis. Hasil pengujian menunjukkan bahwa bahan pengawet yang digunakan sangat efektif mencegah serangan rayap tanah Coptotermes curvignathus Holmgren dan rayap kayu kering Cryptotermes cynocephalus Light. Keefektifan ditunjukkan oleh tingkat mortalitas rayap 100% pada konsentrasi 1% dan retensi lebih dari 5,30 kg/m3. Namun demikian terhadap jamur pelapuk kayu Schizophyllum communekonsentrasi efektif diperoleh pada larutan 7,5% dan retensi di atas 30 kg/m3.

Abstract

Rosin is a mixture of abietic and pimaric acids with small amount of neutral materials. By modifying these acids could widen its utilizations. One of modified rosin is maleic rosin. This study is intended to find out the effect of acid concentration on yield and maleic rosin physico-chemical properties. The research target is to determine a proper condition for manufacturing of maleic rosin which could fulfill the standard requirements.The manufacturing of maleic rosin was carried out by elevating the temperature to 160 - 170 °C and maintained it at this temperature for 2-3 hours. Maleic acid that was used in the process consisted of 0 %, 2%. 4%, 6% and 8%. The physico-chemical properties of the maleic rosin produced was analysed. As raw materials. this experiment utilized rosin from North Sumatra (WW quality) and rosin from East Java (WG quality). The phsyco-chemical properties of the products were then analysed. The data were analysed by using factorial random design, and the different value between means was calculated with Tukey procedure by the SAS computer package.The results showed that the increase in maleic acid concentration caused to increase in yield, softening points. acid value. and saponification value of maleic rosin. The ash content value, however, did not exhibit certain tendency when maleic rosin were produced under the experimental condition applied. Rosin from East Java with WW quality produced maleic rosin higher softening point and saponification value than that of from North Sumatra with WG quality. Based on its softening point and dirt content, manufacturing maleic rosin with acid concentration 2 % in this experiment produced maleic rosin which could meet the requirement of second quality for Chinesse maleic rosin.

Abstract

Pada umumnya kayu dari hutan tanaman memiliki diameter kecil dan mudah terserang jamur perusak kayu. Ketahanan empat jenis kayu hutan tanaman (Acacia aulacocar pa A. Cunn., Acacia auriculiformis A. Cunn., Acacia crassicarpa A. Cunn., dan Eucalyptus pellita F.v.M.) diuji terhadap jamur menggunakan standar DIN 52176 yang telah dimodifikasi. Contoh uji dibagi dalam dua kelompok secara radial, yaitu bagian tepi dan dalam dolok. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kayu Acacia aulacocar pa dan Eucalyptus pellita termasuk kelompok kayu agak-tahan (kelas III) dan kayu Acacia auriculiformis dan Acacia crassicarpa termasuk kelompok kayu tidak-tahan (kelas IV).Berdasarkan dua kelompok contoh uji, kehilangan berat kayu bagian dalam sebesar 6,3% (kelas III) lebih rendah dibandingkan dengan kehilangan berat kayu bagian tepi sebesar 12,4% (kelas IV). Kehilangan berat tertinggi (36,8%) terjadi pada bagian tepi kayu Acacia crassicarpa yang diletakkan pada biakan Polyporus sp. Sedangkan kehilangan berat terendah (0,8%) terjadi pada bagian dalam kayu Acacia crassicarpa yang diletakkan pada biakan Pycnoporus sanguineus HHB-8149. Berdasarkan kemampuan jamur untuk melapukkan kayu, kemampuan tertinggi dijumpai pada Tyromyces palustris, kemudian diikuti Polyporus sp., Pycnoporus sanguineus HHB-324, dan Schizophyllum commune.

Abstract

Biomassa merupakan salah satu alternatif bahan baku potensial untuk produksi biofuel atau bioetanol. Tulisan ini mempelajari pembuatan bioetanol dari bahan lignoselulosa, yaitu limbah batang kelapa sawit. Batang sawit dibagi menjadi tiga bagian, yaitu parenkim (P), vaskular bundel (VB) dan campuran keduanya (PVB). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, kadar gula pereduksi sebelum fermentasi semua perlakuan lebih tinggi dari sampel tanpa penambahan surfaktan (kontrol) pada konsentrasi selulase 10 dan 15 FPU/g substrat. Kadar etanol tertinggi (1,63%) berasal dari parenkim dengan konsentrasi selulase 15 FPU/g substrat.

Abstract

The infestations of ambrosia beetle Platypus trepanatus Chap. (Coleoptera:  Platypodidae)    on  felled  ramin trees (Gonystylus bancanus  Kurz.)  were studied  in a logging area of  West Kalimantan. Three felled ramin trees, d.b.h,  approximately 25  cm,  were prepared  for  the  beetle  infestations   on  their  felling  sites  for 20 days.  Six sections of each  trunk, each of  0.5 m length, which  were consecutively arranged at intervals 2.0 m started  from  the basal, were observed.  Number of  the  beetle  tunnels  on each trunk  section  were counted, and diameter,  area of surface, and volume  of the trunk  sections, were  measured.More  tunnels   were  found   on  the  larger diameter  of  trunk  sections.  However,  analyses  of  the  data showed  no  discernible  trends  for  the  intensity   of  the  beetle  attacks   in  different   trunk  sections  and  that  the size  as well.  Those,  the increasing number  of  the  tunnels  of  the  beetle   is in lines   with  the increase  of  the  host  sizes.

Abstract

Wood samples of 17 species measuring 5 cm x 5 cm x 30 cm were treated with BFCA preservative by cold soaking treatment were 1, 3 and 5 days with preservative concentration of 5 and 10 percent.Taking retention and penetration requirements into consideration for wood uses under roof and in the Open air, both .Without ground contact, the resulls that seven wood species could be satisfactorily treated under the experimental conditions. However, it is important to note that three of the seven species, i.e. tumbawa (Dysoxylum sp.), cempaka (Ehmerilla ovalis) and merawan (Hopeasp.) falfilled only the requirements for wood usage under the roof without ground contact. The treatment schedule proposed for the seven wood species is also presented in this paper.

Abstract

This paper  described   the study on  the  effect   of  distilling  time and methods  on yield and pysiocheical properties of  cananga  oil.  The  distillation   methods   applied   were  water  distillation an  water steam  distillation with   the  distilling time  being  8, 16, and  24  hours, consecutively. The  results  were analysed  using  the  randomized completely block  design, and the difference  between means were tested  with  the Least  Significant  Difference  method.The  results  showed that  the  distilling method appeared   to  have  significant   effect   on  the  saponification and ester numbers whereas, the oil yield was  significantly increased  with prolonged distilling time. Water distillation method produced higher quality of  cananga  oil than that produced by  the water-steam distillation  one.  This was indicated  by a higher ester number  of  the oil obtained  by  the water  distillation.

Abstract

The formaldehyde  emtsston of particleboard  bonded  with  urea formaldehyde  (UF) can affect health, especially if it is used in a room with limited ventilation.  To reduce formaldehyde emission,  the glue can be mixed with catching agent.  In this report, the effect of using urea and melamine as catching agents on formaldehyde  emission,   and on the physical  and mechanical properties  of UF bonded particleboard is described.The effect of percentage  of catching agent on formaldehyde  emission is highly significant. The higher  the percentage  of catching agent,  the lower formaldehyde  emission of particle­board.  On urea­melamine  (U/M) ratio of  4,  the formaldehyde  emission of particleboard  can meet American  and Japanese  Standard on the percentage  of 5,  10  and 15%,  while on  U/M ratio of 7 and 10,  the formaldehyde  emission can conform the standards on the percentage  of 10  and 15%.   The effect  of addition of  urea and melamine  was significant and  even highly significant on the physical and mechanical properties,  but not on the shear strength.  The effect of U/M ratio was either not significant.Key words :  particleboard,  urea-melamine,  formaldehyde emission,  physical and  mechanical properties.
