Abstract

Dalam tulisan dikemukakan hasil destilasi kering dari 15 jenis kayu berasal dari Jawa Barat dan Aceh dengan menggunakan retor listrik pada suhu sekitar 500"C selama 4-5 jam. Berat jenis kayu yang diteliti masing-masing berkisar antara 0,45 - 0,61 dan 0,26 - 0,88; nilai kalor antara 4337 - 4510 cal/g dan 4213 - 4479 cal/g.Hasil destilasi kering memperlihatkan bahwa rendemen arang asal Jawa Barat dan Aceh masing-masing berkisar antara 28,89 - 33,05% dan 28.23 - 33,66%; ter berkisar antara 5,65 - 12,52 % dan 0,86 - 12,25%; destilat antara 60,32 - 106,47% dan 10,58 - 83,86%; serta gas antara 27, 76 -53,18 dan 29,35 - 55,62%.Sifat fisis-kimia arang menunjukkan kisaran nilai kalor antara 6928 - 7357 cal/g. kadar abuantara 0,96 - 2,56%, zat terbang antara 18,06 - 21,98% dan kadar karbon terikat antara 76,25 -80, 72%. Sifat ini memberikan petunjuk bahwa semua arang hasil penelitian adalah baik untukdigunakan sebagai bahan baku untuk arang aktif serta bahan bakar dan pereduksi pada industripeleburan bijih besi.Jenis kayu yang menghasilkan rendemen arang, tar, destilat dan gas yang tinggi antara lain kisereh, meranti merah, merawan, anglau, bentol, bayut. Kayu tersebut disarankan sebagai bahan baku yang baik untuk destilasi kering.

Abstract

Sago tree (Metroxylon rumphii) is a potential source of starch and an important contributor of non timber forest products for foodstuff reserve because it has a high carbohydrate content particularly starch. The idea of converting sago starch into dextrin compound is to enhance wider use and increase the economic value of the this commodity. Dextrin has been known for its use as additives in textile industries, pulp/paper industries and pharmaceutical industries.A laboratory trial has been conducted to convert sago into dextrin harnessing the activities of particular enzymes. The aim of this trial was to figure out optimum condition of enzymatic 'sago-processing into satisfactory-quality dextrin, able to comply with the requirement of Indonesian National Standard (INS). The target is to obtain appropriate technology development in sago-derived dextrin.The result revealed that the optimum condition was obtained at substrate concentration of 25 percent with enzyme dosage at 0,9 gram per kg of substrate (dry-weight). In this condition, the dextrin solubility complies with the INS requirement; i.e 25 percent with enzyme dosage at 0,5 gram per kg of substrate (dry- weight).

Abstract

Rotan merupakan salah satu hasil hutan bukan kayu, dan di Indonesia berperan penting sebab memasok 80% kebutuhan bahan baku rotan dunia.  Rotan banyak dimanfaatkan antara lain untuk tali, anyaman, tikar, keranjang, perabot rumah tangga, barang kerajinan, dan produk meubelar.  Pemanfaatan rotan menjadi produk berguna ditentukan diantaranya oleh kerapatan, dan kekuatan (MOR) dan kekakuan (MOE), di mana semakin tinggi nilai ketiga sifat tersebut, maka semakin baik pula kualitas rotan tersebut.  Di Asia Tenggara, termasuk Indonesia, terdapat 2 dari 8 genera rotan yang bernilai ekonomi tinggi, yaitu Calamus dan Daemonorops. Sebagai kaitannya, telah dilakukan pencermatan 25 jenis rotan Indonesia dan kelasifikasinya berdasarkan kerapatan, MOR, dan MOE.  Dua puluh lima jenis tersebut didominasi oleh Calamus spp. dan Daemonorops spp. Penelaahan secara menyeluruh berdasarkan kerapatan, MOR, dan MOE, sebanyak  16%  dari 25 jenis rotan dapat dikelompokkan sebagai kelas I (sangat baik); 36% sebagai kelas II (baik); 32% sebagai kelas III (sedang); dan 16% sebagai kelas IV (rendah).  Penelahan berdasarkan keseluruhan sifat (Kerapatan, MOR, MOE) mengindikasikan 4 jenis rotan yang paling berprospek untuk dimanfaatkan (mulai dari urutan tertinggi) yaitu Korthlsia rigida Bl, Calamus inops Becc.ex Heyne, dan Calamus koordesianus Becc dan Korthalsia echinometra Becc; sedangkan yang paling tidak berprospek adalah Korthalsia zeppelii Burret, Plectocomiopsis geminiflora(Griff) Becc, dan Calamus ornatus Blume dan Daemonorops malanocaetes BL.

Abstract

The EXP-2000 is a multipurpose equipment designed for use in logging operation. especially for loading and skidding of logs. In the first trial conducted in 2001, the productivity of EXP-2000 turned out to be very low i.e. 0.872 m3hm/hour. The investment cost of EXP-2000 was about Rp 67.5 million so the cost of operation was Rp. 28,736.25 per hour. After improvement in the performance has been improved: skidding productivity was increased to 3.293 m3.hm/hour and production cost of was reduced Rp 8. 725.29 per m3.In loading operation, the performance of EXP-2000 has been improved by increasing productivity from 3.293 m3.hm/hour to 34.705 m3/hour and decreasing the cost from Rp. 5,315 per m3 to Rp. 828.03 per m3. It means that the implementation of a new improved EXP-2000 is promising both technically and economically due to higher productivity compared to that of using animal (buffalo) and conventional skyline system previously developed by the Research and Development Center for Forest Product Technology, Bogor - Indonesia.

Abstract

Three teak wood sawmilis  in Central Java and two in East  Java have been selected for study on target aize determi- nation Using 100  board samples  from   each sawmill. The result was calculated using formulos for determining lumber tar get sizeThe  rasult  indicates that actual size produced by three sawmills were higher than target size,  ranging from 0.32 mm to 2.11  mm. The actual size produced by  two other sawmills was lower than the tagret size, ranging from 0.61  mm to 6.48 mnt 5.48 mm.  This result indicates  that target size determination is important  to improve  sawing  efficiency.

Abstract

The Forest Product Research and  Development Centre, Bogor, has  constructed  the Lorena,   Singer and the Traditional  fuelwood stoves to measured the  efficiency of each type. The material used for the construction of the stoves are clay, sand, sawdust, red-bricks  and  water.The  efficiency of  each  type  is  measured  by  using  the  stoves  for  cooking  water  to  boiling point in an aluminium pan, where rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) wood is used as fuelwood.The  stoves  efficiency is expressed  as the  ratio  between  the effective  heat the boiled  water absorbs and the potensial heat  produced by  firewoods.The results of the  observations and  calculations  of  the  efficiency of   the  respective types   of   firewood   stoves indicated  that  the  Lorena  stove  has the  highest  efficiency of  24.75%,  followed by the Singer stove with  24.50%, and the traditional  one,  the least  efficient   is 18.64%. Compared  with  the tested  traditional stove, the  Lorena  and  the  Singer stoves  appear  to have high efficiency which consumed 30% less of  fuelwood.

Abstract

This paper presents  the results of the study on ground exposure caused by skidding.  The case study was carried out at two forest companies in Riau in  1995.  The aim of the study were :  I. to find the road skidding condition that shows by the ground exposure caused by skidding, 2. to know the factors influencing the ground exposure and 3. to find  the way of reducing ground exposure.Data collected were the number of trees felled/skidded, the number of trees with diameter 20 cm and up.  length and area of skidding road.   The data was analized  by using the multiple regression.The study showed the following results : 1. The average of non-productive skidding road is 13.4  % from  the number of productive skidding road; 2. The extravagant of tractor operation was 2680 hours; 3. The forest damage was 154.4 m2 per ha;  4.  The ground  exposure caused by skidding  was 14.1  %;  and  5.   The number  of  trees felled/skidded was highly  significant  to ground exposure.Keywords :  skidding,  skidding road, ground exposure.

Abstract

Experimental    laminated   box  beam  were  constructed    for  their  mechanical  properties  test.  The pile  component  of box  beam  was prepared  consisting  of  solid  wood   as upperside  and  downside   flange  and plywood  or particleboard   as left and  right   web.   The  dimension   of  box  beam  is  9.1  cm  x  20 cm x 244  cm where  the dimension   of solid wood are 5.5 cm x3.5   cm  x 244  cm  and the dimensions   of plywood  and particleboard   are 1.8 cm  x 20 cm x 244  cm. All components   were  onnected   by glue,  nail and  combination    of  both.  The  strength   of  box  beam is based on the static  bending  test especially its  modulus  of elasticity  (MOE) and  modulus  of rupture  (MOR)  by Baldwin  universal testing  machine  with ASTM  method.The results  show  that  the  experimental     box  beam produced   had adequate  MOE and MOR  for construction   purpose. The  nail   and  nail-glue   combination    to  connect  plywood  and particleboard   components    with  solid  wood  give  high  value of  MOE and  MOR  of  box  beam.

Abstract

Demand side economic analysis  or the so called market approach economic analysis was conducted  to evaluate  the Indonesian Selective  Cutting and Planting  System  (IPTI)  and its complementary  technique called  TJTI (Indonesian Strip  Cutting  and Planting System) at PT. ITCI (International  Timber Corporation Indonesia) Forest Concession Management and Operations in East Kalimantan.The analysis proved that the logs produced and marketed both with TPTI and TJTI systems of forestry  operations  and practices  in East Kalimantan,  one of the Indonesian Outer Java Inslands rich tropical forest archipelagoes is viable and economically feasible to maintain  the sustainable production  and  marketing.  However, further research is needed to evaluate the resource and supply side economic analysis including sustainable forest  resource management, minimum and maximum management unit sizes of both TJTI and TPTI and its sustainability  in terms of production,  socio-economic  and ecological-biophysical.Key words:   Economic  analysis,   TPTI,   TJTI and  Sustainable Forest Management.

Abstract

Survey  of  commercial  and  lesser known   wood  species  marketed   in Surabaya  has been conducted.   The survey  result  from  several  companies  shows  that  there  are 21  commercial  wood  species represented   by 10 families and 10 trade names.  The  trade name used in Surabaya  is similar to those  listed  in the official  Indonesian   Timber  nomen  clature. A  tentative  identification   key  of  the  above  wood  species  is presented   in this  paper.
