Abstract

Potensi kayu berdiameter kecil (<10cm) dari hutan tanaman cukup besar namun belum dimanfaatkan secara optimal. Sesungguhnya kayu tersebut dapat digunakan sebagai bahan baku pembuatan papan isolasi. Pada penelitian ini menggunakan kayu mangium (Acacia mangium) berdiameter kecil untuk dijadikan pulp, kemudian digunakan dalam pembuatan papan isolasi. Selanjutnya guna meningkatkan fungsi dari papan tersebut, tidak hanya sebagai insulation juga sebagai penyerap gas/uap, maka sebelum dibentuk lembaran papan, pulp mangium dicampur terlebih dahulu dengan arang serat (hasil pengarangan serat kayu mangium dan karet) pada beberapa komposisi yaitu 100:0, 90:10, 80:20 and 70:30 (w/w). Pulp mangium dibuat dengan proses soda panas terbuka. Kualitas papan isolasi yang dibuat telah memenuhi standar Jepang kecuali untuk pengembangan tebalnya. Berdasarkan nilai scoring, kerapatan, dan sifat fisik-mekanik papan isolasi serta dibandingkan dengan standar Jepang maka papan isolasi yang optimal diperoleh pada kontrol dan komposisi pulp dan arang 90:10. Sifat-sifat tersebut mengindikasikan bahwa kayu mangium berdiamater kecil dapat dibuat papan isolasi dengan kualitas yang baik.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui sifat keteguhan lentur dan patah (MOE dan MOR) balok lamina dari kayu limbah pembalakan hutan tanaman dengan menggunakan tiga jenis perekat yaitu lignin resorsinol formaldehida (LRF), tanin resorsinol formaldehida (TRF) dan phenol resorsinol formaldehida (PRF). Kayu lamina dibuat dari komposisi tiga jenis kayu yaitu tusam (Pinus merkusii), damar (Agathis sp.). dan gmelina (Gmelina arborea).Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa masa kempa 8 jam menghasilkan nilai MOE lebih besar sedangkan masa kempa 12 jam meningkatkan MOR. Komposisi jenis terbaik dari kayu lamina berdasarkan MOE dan MOR-nya adalah agatis-agatis-agatis pada masa kempa 8 jam. Ketiga jenis kayu limbah pembalakan memiliki sifat perekatan yang baik dan cocok dibuat produk kayu rekonstitusi khususnya kayu lamina tipe eksterior untuk keperluan struktural.

Abstract

Porang (Amorphophallus muelleri Blume) adalah salah satu jenis hasil hutan bukan kayu (HHBK) yang memiliki berbagai keunggulan dibandingkan dengan tanaman pangan lainnya. Dari aspek budidaya dan kandungan tepungnya, tepung porang menjadi salah satu sumber pangan alternatif. Saat ini, peningkatan kadar glucomannan menjadi tantangan dalam pengolahan pasca panen porang. Peningkatan kadar glukomanan akan meningkatkan pemanfaatan tepung porang dan membuka pasar tepung porang. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendapatkan teknik pemurnian glukomanan yang optimal. Penelitian dilakukan dengan teknik perendaman dengan etanol (30%, 40%, dan 50%) dan natrium bisulfit (2%, 3%, dan 4%). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa teknik perendaman dengan etanol berpengaruh nyata terhadap peningkatan kadar glukomanan. Pencucian dengan etanol 50% dan NaHSO3 2% dapat meningkatkan glukomanan dari 32,65% menjadi 83,96%. Proses perendaman dengan etanol meningkatkan kadar glukomanan tetapi tidak mempengaruhi kandungan zat besi (Fe) dan kalsium (Ca) tepung porang.

Abstract

This report  deals  with  the  making  of  blackboard   with  coconut   wood  core and  testing  the physical  and  mechanical  properties   of  the blackboard.   The coconut  wood (Cocos nucifera)  was collected from   Banten,  (West  Java).The results, indicate that the physical properties  of blockboard  with coconut  wood core are worse than that with a mixture  of red meranti and coconut  wood core. The bending strength  paralel  to the grain of blockboard  with coconut  wood core is better  than that   with a mixture  of coconut  wood and meranti  wood,  while the properties  perpendicular  to the grain do not show  significant  difference.Only  the glue shear strength  of  blockboard   type  II  with a mixture  of  coconut  wood  and  red meranti  wood  core is in compliance  with Indonesian  and Japanesse  (JAS)  standars.

Abstract

Rattan for the furniture  raw materials is easily attacked by stain fungi and moulds during air  drying, leaving discolored  surfaces.  The soft portion is also susceptible to attack of powder post beetles. To prevent this problem, the newly cut rattan should be  treated with preservative to ensure  a reasonable service life. The treatment   method affects the extent of penetration and absorption of  preservation  into the rattan. The rasult of study  on the preservation  of rattan by pressure process is presented  in this paper. A  pressure   period for 5, 15, and 25  minutas  was sufficient  to obtain required retention of preservative for the rattan tabu-tabu, batang and tohiti.

Abstract

The  objective  of  this study   is to determine   the  sawing properties   of  triclopyr  poisoned   rasamala logs compared   to the girdled and normal ones.   The effect  of sawing pattern  on sawing properties   were also observed.The  log samples  used  in this  experiment  comprise  of  18 pieces  which  were collected  from  three different groups  of tree  (poisoned   and  girdled  in one  year periode,   and control).   Six  logs of  each group  were sawn  in two  sawing patterns, namely   live sawing  and  semi-quarter   sawing.   Parameters  of  sawing observed  include  recovery,  productivity,  power   con- sumption,   and sawn timber  defects,  particulary  splits and bowing.The  results  of  study   revealed  that  moisture  content   of poisoned   logs was 20%  lower  than  the  normal  one.   Mean-while,   both  moisture  content  of girdled logs and poisoned   ones are not significantly  diferent.       Poisoning  treatment   on  rasamala trees  in comparison   to girdled and normal ones did not show  significant  difference in  any  sawing properties,   except   sawing productivity.   The  sawing  recovery,  power   consumption,    splits  and  bowing  of sawn  timber  were  62%;  32.37  watt  sec./cm2,     5.21   cm  and  3.91   cm,   respectively.   The  live sawing could  increase the pro- ductivity as much  as 0.18   m3 /hour  higher than semi-quarter   sawing.

Abstract

An observation on wood transportation by truck has been carried out in the Bojonegoro and Saradan Forest Districts.  Trucks are MercedesBenz, consistingof models rangingfrom 1970 to 1975.The annual operation days of truck at the Bojonegoro and Saradan Forest Districts are 147 and 193  days respectively. The average annual hauling capacity of trucks in Bojonegoro and Saradan is 14 964 ton­km per year and 41 145 ton­km per year respectively.The average hauling cost in Bojonegoro and Saradan is Rp.  300,­  per ton­km  and Rp.  107,­ per ton­km respectively.  This cost is broken down into the following components: Fuel, 9 percent; grease, 9 percent; spare parts,  55 percent; tyres,  23 percent; miscellaneous, 4 percent.

Abstract

This  article  describes   the  experiment  of  sugar and  alcohol  contents from 3  wood  species,  i.e. jelutung (Dyera costulata, Hook. F), keruing (Dipterocarpus  appendiculatus, Sheff) and  durian  (Durio excelsus, Bakb) by using hydrolysis and  fermentation process. Treatment condition for  hydrolysis  were at 3 levels of sulfuric acid concentration which were 1%, 2%, and 3%  respectively. The fermentation methods agent for producing alcohol  from  sugar of wood  hydrolysis  was the yeast  of  bread containing  Saccharomyces cereviceae.The  result  of this experiment indicated  that  the yield  of sugar ranges from  9.71 % -   11.89% with average of 1,06%. This average yield  of  sugar falls in  the  range of  the  sugar yield  obtained from other researches which have  range from 11-18%.                                                                                                                                                                                                    The  average alcohol  yield  obtained  from  sugar fermentation  was 2.62%. This yield  was lower compared  with other experiment   producing   alcohol  from  wood  abroad, i.e. 8 -   15%. The  result  showed  that  the yield  of sugar is not affected by  the  wood  species  and  low  concentration  of  sulfuric acid  treatment.

Abstract

Physical deformation such as checks or cracks is commonly encountered in the process of drying wood statues.  In the senses of economic and quality improvement, such a case has long been a serious handicap to the Balinese crofters.  A number of trials have been made through modification of drying schedules, but these gave  little protection agents check/crack development, particularly for the medium  to  large size  statues. The  use of polyethylene glycol  (PEG-1000) has significantly  reduced  the  rate  of physical deformation, however, it raised another problem  in finishing and could promote a surface  discoloration. This study  examined another approach of cracking prevention by application of coating treatments to the end grain of wood structure.Fresh  logs of  two  wood species,  i.e., sengon  (Paraserianthes  falcataria  {L.)  Nielsen.)  and  mindi  (Melia azedarach  L.)  were crosscut to 50 cm long specimens,  and then shaped into a simple cat-form statues sizing of approximately  21 cm  wide and 46 cm long. End coatings were applied separately using 4 different materials, i.e., resorcinol formaldehyde, polyvinyl acetate, wood filler and cement.  All treatments were accomplished approximately 30 minutes prior to oven drying, Physical deformation of wood statues was de/ermined  by measuring the width,  length and gap-size of cracks using a digital caliper. The related physical characteristics, such as moisture content and specific: gravity of each species were also determined.Sengon  had a lower  specific: gravity, but a  greater  green  moisture  content  and  dry-ability  than  mindi. Wood physical deformation of both treated and untreated sengon was obviously greater than mindi.   The effectiveness of end coating treatments in reducing  wood cracks  varied according  to  wood species  and the coating materials.     Wood statues  of sengon  experienced more rigorous cracks than those of mindi.   The  use of wood adhesives as coating materials gave a helter cracking protection than the wood filling agents. Although polyvinyl acetate could not greatly minimize the physical deformation  of belalu,  it revealed  to be the most effective coating material for cracking prevention.

Abstract

Wood samples  of  15 species  measuring  5 x  5 x  30 cm  were treated  with 5 percent  of BFCA preservative by hot and cold  soaking.  Hot  soaking  period  was respectiuely 1  hour,  3 houn  and 5 hours, with  temperature  range  of 65ᵒC ­-  70ᵒ C, followed by  cold  soaking  for  24 hours. The  test  result  of  experiment, after taking  both  retention and penetration requirements into  consideration  for wood uses  under  roof,  and  in the  open  air both  without   ground  contact,  showed  that  nine Wood  species  could  be satisfactorily  treated  under   the  experimental  conditions.   However, it is important  to  note  that  one  of  the  nine species,  i.e.  benuang   (Octomeles   sumatrana)  fulfilled  the  requirements   for  wood   usage  under   the roof  only  without ground   contact.  The preservation schedule proposed  for  nine wood species is also presented in this paper.
