Abstract

Experimental study on several HTI wood species to produce activated charcoal is reported in this paper. The result showed that the yield  of activated charcoal range from 30,35  - 43,25 %,  moisture content from 9,23 - 13,34  %, ash content from 1,62  - 6,76 %, volatile matter from 4,94 - 6,65%, fixed  carbon from  88,30-   91,73   %, adsorptive capacity of iodine from 1002 - 1130 mg/g and adsorptive  capacity  of benzene from 33,50 - 44,02 %. Based on adsorptive capacity of iodine, good  quality  of  the  activated  charcoal  was produce from  sengon  (Paraserienthes falcataria) wood species, this  criteria  has  met the commercial standard  requirement of  the Indonesian Industrial Standard and Japanese Standard.The quality  of  the cajeput oil refined with the good quality of activated charcoal experiment shows that the cineol content became 23,17  % from,21,76  %.Key words :  HTI timbers, Activated charcoal, Properties, Quality

Abstract

This research studied  the  fluizided bed gasification  process of wood  waste that could produce  highly yield  and good quality   of fuel gas.The processing  treatments  were conducted at 3 levels of  wood  feed flow  rate i.e 3. 6., 3.8 and 4.2  kgs/hour and 5 leveis  of air flow rate i.e  4.4,  4.7, 5.0,5.4 and 6.5  m3/hour.The  result  revaled that highest  caloriffic  value of produced gas was 7.106  MJ/m3   which  resulted  from  wood  feed and air  flow  rate  3. 6 kg/hour  and  4. 4  m3 /hour, respectively.  The product   gas composition  of  this  rate  was H2  = 5. 62 .CH = 3.99; CO=  11.77; C2H4 = 4.34;  C2H6 = 0.21; N2 = 57.69; 02 = 0.40 and C02 = 15. 71 (in  %  volume)The highest  total  energy  of product   gas was 20.36  MJ/m3  with fuel gas efficiency 26.16% which  resulted  from  feed and  air flow rote  4.2 kg/hour  and  6.5  m3/hour, respectively.  The product   gas composition at this rate  was H2  = 6.03; CH4  = 3.51;  CO=  12.60;  C2H4  = 2.46; C2H6  = 0.16; N2  = 57.23;  02  = 0.45  and C02   = 17.58,  while  the fluidued   bed gasification process  was held at 97oᵒC.

Abstract

The aim of this investigation is to evaluate  the effect of extraction methodes on physical  and chemical properties  of sago. Extraction  methodes  comprise  of  fermentation,  mechanical, and  traditional.The result indicated that sago yield varies from 20,19%  - 40,12%, acidity  0,89 - 0,98,  moisture  13,39% -14,29%, ash 0,15%  - 0,32%, protein 0,38%  - 0,46%, crude  fiber 0,27%  - 0,31%,  fat  0,17%  - 0,23%  and amylum  72,64%  - 88,12%.Mechanical  extractions  gave  the  highest  yield  and  amylum  content. Fermentation  methode  show more  acid  than traditional.  The traditional  methode presents the  highest ash content. This included that the mechanical methode  seemed to be preferable   for  commercial application.

Abstract

A  study  on  the  forest  road  element   conditions   in relation  to soil  erosion  potentials   was carried out  at two  logging companies   in Buntok   area,   Central  Kalimantan   in  1988.  Road   elements   measured   in  the  field  are those  related  to  the Universal Soil  Loss  Equation   factors  such  as road openings,  surfaces,  slopes,  ditches,  culverts,  cuts,  fills, diversion  ditches, and the incidence  of  vegetation.The  results  showed   that  forest   road  elements   are in  the  condition   of  high potentials   for  accelerating  soil  erosion.Factors  that  caused  this problem,   as identified   in the field,  are:  long and steep  slopes,  wide ground  openings,  and  bare soil surfaces,  in addition   to  the  originally  sensitive  to  erosion  soil  type,  and  hot  and  wet  weather.Qualitatively,   it is realized  that soil erosion  is quite  serious.  Therefore,  further  study  is necessary  in order  to find  the quantitative   amount   of  soil erosion  occured  in  the  area.

Abstract

Uji asal sumber bibit nilam di Pasaman Barat, Sumatera Barat perlu dilakukan sebagai salah satu tahapan untuk meningkatkan produktivitas hasil panen dan minyak nilam. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menguji tiga asal sumber bibit nilam di Pasaman Barat, Sumatera Barat. Rancangan acak kelompok dilakukan pada penelitian dengan menguji tiga asal sumber bibit nilam sebagai perlakuan yaitu bibit nilam asal Tapak Tuan, asal Dairi dan Sidikalang. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pertumbuhan, potensi produksi terna kering, potensi produksi minyak nilam dan kulitas minyak terbaik ditunjukkan oleh nilam asal sumber bibit asal Dairi. Pemanenan pada umur sebelas bulan setelah tanam, nilam asal bibit Dairi menghasilkan potensi produksi terna kering 19,4 ton/ha, potensi produksi minyak 208 kg /ha dan kandungan patchouli alkohol 44,57%.

Abstract

 Hot gas of rubber wood burning on wood gasifier-combustor with capacity 3 mBTU used for cacao seed  drying at temperature ranged from 68 to 74° C. The moisture content of cacao seed prior to drying was varied from 141.93 to 7.14 %.The trial results revealed that the average of hot gas flow rate was 118.47m3/hour, rubber wood consumed  was 0.33 kg per kg dry cacao seed or 1.03 kg per wet cacao seed, with the moisture content of rubber wood ranged from 11.64 to 14.34 %. The flow rate of drying was 134.63 dry cacao seed per hour and the efficiency of hot gas conversion was 54%. The energy of hot gas consumption was 2.79 MJ per kg cacao seed and the productivity was 94. 67 KJ per kg cacao seed per hour.

Abstract

Copal from Agathis tree has been one of  important  forest  products, not only as export commodity but also as raw material for some induatries. In the last few years however production  in  this country  began to decrease, due to inefficient  tapping by the forest worker.Because of  this reason a study on the tapping procedure is necessary. Thia report deals with a preliminary study on  the present  “quarre”  type  of  tapping procedure commonly  adopted  by the forest  worker. The locality chosen was Gede Barat Sub forest district at Sukabumi, West Java.Three factors were chosen  for the tapping study, namely the effect  on of resin productivity  of the location of the wound with respect to west and east direction (factor A), time of tapping (factor B) and type of wound covering (factor C).  The result of this study show that :Covering of tap wound does not cause incoveniences   to the worker.Resin productivity is not significantly affected by the wound location.The highest production of the resin per tree comes from the wound cut in the morning and covered with black coloured polyethelene sheet.

Abstract

Tanaman jarak pagar memiliki prospek untuk dikembangkan sebagai tanarnan konservasi tanah dan air, disamping juga tanaman tersebut memiliki berbagai manfaat. Aneka pemanfaatan tanaman tersebut  antara lain: minyak dari biji sebagai bahan baku pernbuatan  biodiesel, selain itu limbah tanaman dan limbah proses dapat dibuat berbagai produk yang bernilai ekonomis seperti gliserin, makanan  ternak, arang aktif, pulp  kertas, papan  serat dan lain-lain. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menyediakan informasi dan teknologi tepat guna pembuatan pulp kertas dan papan serat dari kayu tanaman jarak pagar yang sudah tidak produktif  serta pemanfaaran kayu tanaman tersebut dari hasil pangkasan.Hasil penelitian pembuatan pulp kertas menunjukkan kayu jarak pagar  berserat pendek, kayunya sangat ringan, dinding tipis, bilangan Runkel < 1. Sifat tersebut menunjukkan bahwa kayu jarak pagar dapat dibuat pulp kertas dengan  kualitas medium. Pengaruh NaOH dan waktu pemasakan dapat meningkatkan   nilai indeks  retak,  indeks sobek  dan indeks tarik pulp, sedangkan pengaruhnya terhadap gramatur dan opasitas tidak  nyata. Penggunaan   persentase  soda 10%  dibandingkan  dengan konsentrasi    5% dan 15%  menunjukkan hasil  yang terbaik yaitu rendahnya angka konsumsi alkali dan rendahnya bilangan permanganat, namun juga memberikan rendemen pulp terendah. Hasil penelitian papan serat menunjukkan, kayu jarak pagar juga baik untuk dibuat papan serat. Pengaruh konsentrasi NaOH dan  konsentrasi    perekat   phenol   formaldehida  dapat   meningkatkan  kerapatan,   keteguhan tarik, lentur  dan penyerapan   air.  Sedangkan kadar air,  pengembangan  volume   dan pengembangan tebal cenderung   menurun.  Pada konsentrasi  soda 15%  dibandingkan dengan konsentrasi   5% dan 10%, menunjukkan hasil terbaik.  Semua sifat fisik papan serat memenuhi standar FAQ.

Abstract

The experiment has been conducted on utilizing different types of charcoal as growth-stimulating agents by adding each of them to the growing media (i.e. soil stuff) of red pepper plant; and subsequently evaluating their effects on its growth characteristics/ responses. There were three types of agents used and added to the media, i.e. rice-husk charcoal, bamboo charcoal, and sawdust-mixed charcoal. respectively. For comparative purposes, were also measured the growth responses of the red pepper plant whereby its growing media were added with compost as well as the Bokasi rice-husk charcoal compost, besides the ones in the medium without the addition of any growth agents (as control). This experiment revealed some remarkable results. as follows:•              Additions of 5 % bamboo charcoal or l 0 % rice-husk charcoal could increase the height growth of the red pepper plant, in comparison with the one grown on the control medium:• Additions of 10 % rice-husk charcoal could increase the stem diameter of the plant by 11 % compared to the one on the control medium;•              Likewise, additions of 5 % and 10 % sawdust-mixed charcoal could each increase the stem diameter by consecutively l1 % and 10 %, in comparison with the control;•              Additions of 10 % bamboo charcoal brought about the best effect with respect to the increase in the number as well as the weight in red-pepper fruits in their first harvest (i.e. 3-month age), compared to the control:•              Additions of 10 % rice- husk charcoal, 5 % bamboo charcoal, and 10 % sawdust-mixed charcoal each brought about also the best effect with respect to the increase in the dry weight of the plant, i.e.consecutively 2.0, 2.0, and 1.8 times as such as that of the control;•                              Average amount of C02 absorbed by the red- pepper plants for 3 months was 0.10-0.88 gram per plant. The highest C02 absorption was achieved by the corresponding plants with addition of 10 % sawdust-mixed charcoal (i.e. 1.88 gram C02 per plant), followed in decreasing order by the ones added with 10% rice-husk charcoal and 10 % bamboo charcoal (i.e. 1.67 gram C02per plant and 1.34 gram C02 per plant, respectively).
