Abstract

Strong winds that occur can damage the Eucalyptus pellita plant thereby reducing wood production at the end of the rotation. Biometric characteristics are very important to predict the criteria for trees that are at risk of damage due to wind. This study aims to determine the biometric characteristics that play a role in the risk of trees being damaged by wind. The study was conducted on Eucalyptus pellita aged 5 years. The biometric characteristics studied consisted of diameter at breast height (DBH), total height (H) and crown length (CL) as well as the ratio of H/DBH (slenderness inde)x and CL/H (percentage of  crown). Binary logistic regression analysis was used to analyized  the probability of tree damage due to wind. The results showed that the regression model with the independent variable H/DBH was a suitable model. The H/DBH ratio or tree slenderness index is a biometric characteristic that contributes 11,4% to explain the risk of wind damage.   Keywords: binary logistic regression ; percentage of  crown; slenderness index

Abstract

Natural salt-licks are visited frequently by various species of terrestrial mammals, but the variability in environmental conditions can modify the mammalian visitation pattern in an inland tropical forest. Given that no similar research has been conducted at Segaliud-Lokan Forest Reserve in Sabah (Malaysia), a scientific research was conducted from July 2019 to February 2020 (eight months), to investigate the effects of variability in the environmental conditions on mammalian visitation patterns to the local natural salt-licks, applying the field assessment and camera trapping techniques. Over all, a total of 12 different mammal species were recorded at four selected salt-licks, and then the visitation frequencies of certain species were confirmed to be significantly influenced by the seasonal variability in rainfall patterns, and also by the variations in onsite and surrounding conditions. Further research is required to validate the influences of variability in explanatory variables that were not included in this scientific study. Abstract

This study aims to determine the value of the Eucalyptus health index (Eucalyptus urograndis) and to determine the supporting factors that affect the severity of Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus urograndis) damage. The research method used was Forest Health Monitoring (FHM). The results obtained were the part that had the highest amount of damage was found in the leaves with a percentage of 96.39% damage caused by pests and diseases. The worst part is the next part of the branch with a percentage of 2.66% where the branch is broken due to strong winds. The lowest part of the damage was found in the lower and upper stems which experienced stunted growth (stunted) with a percentage of damage of 0.95%. The cause is due to lack of nutrients and low water absorption, which causes plants to become stunted or experience stunted growth. The value of the eucalyptus health index at PT Industrial Forest Plantation (IFP) is still classified in the healthy class where the average value of the damaging weight is less than 5
