Abstract

This paper examines political tendencies in the interpretation of the Qur’an during the early medieval Islamic period. It investigates the Aḥkām al-Qur’ān, an exegetical text based on jurisprudential genre, written by al-Jaṣṣās (305-370 AH) and elaborates on his critical stance towards the Umayyad leadership. A socio-political analysis is used to trace the author’s political situation, ideology, and school of thought, which illuminates his tendencies. This study shows that even though Aḥkām al-Qur’ān has a jurisprudential basis, it also conveys a political message intended to oppose the Umayyads. Several verses (9:29, 1:1, 22:41, 24:45 and 49:9) were introduced to demonstrate his critical standpoint against the Umayyads, who were portrayed as an imperfect government. This finding, therefore, supports the claim that schools of fiqh are not always independent, but often align with particular political tendencies. I argue that the Hanafi school invested considerably in al-Jaṣṣās, not only in terms of his jurisprudential reasoning (ijtihād), but also in his critical and hostile attitude towards the Umayyad leaders.

Abstract

This study examines the significance of ṣalawat ashghil as embodied in the non-violent resistance of the Wadas residents in Purworejo against the construction of the Bener dam. Contrary to the common perception that religion and environmental activism are separate spheres, the people of Wadas demonstrate how religious expression can be closely intertwined with ecological protest. By employing resistance theory and a phenomenological approach, this qualitative research investigates how the recitation of ṣalawat ashghil functions as a form of religious resistance. The findings reveal that this non-violent resistance is deeply rooted in the community’s understanding of the Qur’an and hadīth, embodying what can be described as a lived interpretation of these texts. The villagers attribute spiritual power and protective efficacy to the practice of ṣalawāt ashghīl, viewing it as a means of confronting injustice. Drawing on James C. Scott’s theory of resistance, their actions constitute a subtle yet enduring form of dissent that operates without overt confrontation with dominant power structures. This case offers an alternative framework for understanding Islamic resistance by illustrating how devotional practices can serve as potent vehicles for socio-environmental critique.

Abstract

This article analyzes the oral and written aspects of the Qur’an through Angelika Neuwirth’s pre-canonical framework, using sūrah al-Ikhlāṣ as a case study. It highlights Neuwirth’s argument that the oral nature of the Qur’an is essential for understanding its original communicative context, which has been obscured by its textual codification. The study employs a historical-critical methodology to examine the sociolinguistic context and the dynamic oral features of the Qur’an prior to its codification. Drawing on Neuwirth’s foundational works and supported by secondary literature, it proposes a pre-canonical reading approach that seeks to recover the socio-historical dimensions often overlooked in canonical interpretations. By exploring the interplay between oral and written dimensions, this study reveals how sūrah al-Ikhlāṣ reflects its early reception and positions it within its historical and cultural context. It addresses the broader question of how pre-canonical approaches enhance understanding of the Qur’an’s formative period. The findings underscore the layered meanings and contextual aspect embedded in the text which demonstrates the potential of pre-canonical readings to uncover the Qur’an’s historical and communicative complexities.

Abstract

The practice of Qur’an memorisation, or taḥfīẓ, holds deep spiritual and educational significance in Islamic tradition. In Indonesia, the introduction of tailored muṣḥafs—specialised Qur’anic editions featuring colour-coded tajwīd rules, progress trackers, and other mnemonic aids—has transformed the landscape of taḥfīẓ practices. This study explores the reception of these muṣḥafs among taḥfīẓ circles, focusing on both institutional and individual perspectives. Using qualitative methods, including interviews and observations conducted in taḥfīẓ institutions, the research reveals that while institutions value tailored muṣḥafs for their ability to standardise and streamline memorisation process, individual memorisers appreciate their personalised features, which foster autonomy and spiritual engagement. These muṣḥafs are particularly celebrated for their inclusivity, making Qur’an memorisation accessible to diverse demographics beyond formal settings. However, challenges such as the commodification of religious texts and potential over-reliance on visual aids raise concerns about preserving the oral and spiritual essence of the taḥfīẓ tradition. The findings underscore the dual role of tailored muṣḥafs in modernising the taḥfīẓ practice while highlighting the need for a balanced approach to sustain its sacred and cultural heritage.

Abstract

In recent years, there has been growing interest in how Islamic knowledge is disseminated in the digital age, particularly through charismatic figures who blend traditional learning with modern communication strategies. One such figure is Nouman Ali Khan, a prominent and influential Muslim speaker known for his engaging and accessible approach to Qur’anic interpretation. Despite his wide-reaching impact, academic analysis of Khan’s contribution to contemporary Qur’anic discourse remains limited. This study seeks to address that gap by examining his exegetical strategies and primary areas of focus in his interpretive work. Using qualitative methods, it analyzes data collected from various sources, including social media platforms, public lectures, and scholarly references to Khan’s teachings. Unlike classical exegetes who often draw on theology, jurisprudence, and philosophy, Khan concentrates on the linguistic and rhetorical dimensions of the Qur’an. His interpretive emphasis lies in the eloquence of the Qur’anic text—its word choice, structure, thematic shifts, and stylistic beauty—rather than on legal or theological implications. He highlights features such as the rhythm, sequence, and subtle changes in wording to reveal the Qur’an’s moral and spiritual lessons. This unique focus has made his work especially resonant among audiences seeking a deeper yet accessible understanding of the Qur’anic message.

Abstract

This article offers a thematic and contextual rereading of Qs. Saba’ (34:15), a verse that narrates the prosperity and downfall of the ancient Sabaean civilization. Through this verse, the Qur’an articulates a profound ethical vision in which true prosperity emerges from the harmonious integration of spiritual consciousness, social justice, and ecological responsibility. Drawing on classical and contemporary tafsir, this study examines how diverse exegetical traditions interpret key elements of the verse, from historical narratives and theological reflections to socio-environmental concerns. The analysis indicates that the ingratitude and mismanagement of divine blessings exhibited by the Sabaean people function as a historical cautionary tale and a timeless warning concerning the moral and ecological consequences of human negligence. By situating this Qur’anic episode within the context of present-day global challenges, such as environmental degradation, resource exploitation, and widening social inequality, this study argues that the Qur’an offers an enduring ethical framework for reimagining the foundations of sustainable development. In doing so, it contributes to broader discussions on how scriptural traditions can inform contemporary ecological and moral thought.

Abstract

This article examines the psychological dynamics of leadership within the context of the Israelites, focusing on the analysis of Qs. Al-Baqarah: 246-251 through the psycho-literature approach. The study aims to understand the personality conflicts of key figures in the narrative based on Sigmund Freud’s personality structure: id, ego, and superego. The research employs a qualitative method using library research and content analysis. The findings reveal that the story of the Israelites contains significant moral lessons, particularly in the context of leadership and responses to challenges. The conflict between instinctual drives (id), rationality (ego), and moral values (superego) is clearly reflected in the decisions and actions of the characters, representing the psychological state of the society at that time. Adherence to moral and spiritual values, represented by the superego, is shown to be a critical factor in achieving success and blessings. This study emphasizes the importance of balancing personality components in building effective leadership and highlights the relevance of Qur'anic narratives as an enduring source of moral guidance.
