Abstract

The polemic of hadith authority seems to be endlessly debated by Western and Eastern scholars, Muslims as well as non-Muslims. Aisha Y. Musa reconstructed the debate and discourse of the authority of prophetic traditions by looking at the early manuscripts of the hadith experts. Musa also presented the narratives of the opposition of hadith in the digital era. This debate shows that the authority of hadith did not always enjoy such widespread acceptance. Opposition to the hadith has emerged among Muslims from the first century and has not been limited to one era only, but until now in our contemporary digital era. The polemics are, however, not influenced by Western scholarship and orientalists. On the contrary, it is more response from Muslims to the elevation of the hadith along with the Qur’an as the duality of revelation.

Abstract

Plurality is often deemed as something natural that may become a basis for unity. In Indonesia, Muslims’ thought on the issue has played an instrumental role in organizing the plurality. This article displays the stance of Buya Hamka, one of the most important figures of modernist camp of Muslims in the early stage after Indonesia’s independency, on the issue of plurality by delving into Hamka’s Tafsir al-Azhar. Hamka points out that a Muslim ought to focus on whatsoever lessons they got from others, rather than differences that may trigger social conflict. Yet when it comes to religious plurality, Hamka shows a sort of harsh stance particularly against the Christians. He mentions some aspects he considers theologically incorrect. In doing so, Hamka alludes to many social contexts he lives in, including the practice of endogamy conducted by Arab community on which he criticizes quite loud. The very character echoes the argument of scholars studying tafsirs circulating in Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper describes the structural-semiotic perspective of Ian Richard Netton towards the Qur’anic interpretation of Surah al-Kahf. The analysis departs from the theory of “surah as a whole”, means that a surah of the Qur’an is a collection of the interconnected units. Netton does not provide a thorough interpretation of surah al-Kahf, he only focuses on four stories narrated therein. He argues that the stories in surah al-Kahf contain archetypes and theologemes, and the core of this surah is chaos and harmony. He further stated that every chaos will always be followed by harmony which comes from God’s intervention. On the other hand, I also compare Netton’s interpretation with the structural-thematic approach initiated by Muh}ammad al-Ghaz?l? . In contrast to Netton, al-Ghaz?l? concluds that the essence of surah al-Kahf is to establish monotheistic beliefs.

Abstract

Muslims tend to have an adequate understanding of Islam through the Qur’an and Hadith. However, over the years, hadith has been a source of controversy in Islamic law, with the significant problem associated with understanding and determining the beginning of the hijri month. The difference is due to the various perspectives in understanding the observed crescent. This paper aims at discussing the prominent scholar, Yusuf al-Qaradawi in understanding the hadith in question. It argues that the impact of Yusuf al-Qaradawi’s understanding on the ru’yat al-hilal hadith was to unify the performance of fasting and ‘id al-fitr in Europe based on priority, not to unite all Moslems in the world.

Abstract

In the studies of the Qur’an, there is no central concept as that of the Qur’anic revelation itself. The revelation becomes a symbol for God’s unique communication to humans through human agency, called a prophet. Studies on the Qur’anic revelation by classical Muslim scholars have stressed much on its metaphysical aspects, while modern scholars like Toshiko Izutsu begin offering theoretical readings of the Qur’anic revelation as a linguistic concept, i.e., metaphysical communication expressed in a certain language system. By reviewing the existing studies, this article pays special attention to the sociological significance of the revelation. This study examines how revelation as an act of God arises in a setting of human history, and the extent to which it must correspond and dialogue with the values, institutions, and socio-cultural systems of its first audience. This study sees that the power of the Qur’anic revelation lies in its ability to build legitimacy and to integrate its first audience into a broader horizon that allowed them to participate in the contestation of religious discourse with older religious communities.

Abstract

The article provides an analysis of the book Al-Murshid al-Wajiz fi ‘Ilm al-Qur’an al-‘Aziz written by Muhammad Shaleh Darat. The book was written in Javanese language and having such a concise content compared to other Qur’anic science books. I assume that this kind of summarization process cannot be detached from the author’s consideration of his own context in its age. The thought has relied upon his milieu in compiling the book, including the texts he reads and the context that surrounds him which cannot be separated from his standpoint. It then necessitates the transmission and transformation, perceiving the bulk of knowledge and reactualizing it into the work. In this work, I examine its transmission and transformation right after elucidating the social conditions at that time. Further, I consider about the new culture of Qur’anic theory and trace it by sociological approach.

Abstract

This article argues that the attitude of Indonesian mufassir is not always parallel in respond to the concept of Human Rights. This is shown from our discussion of three contextual issues in human rights: freedom of religion, freedom to find a mate, and death sentence, which are exemplified by comparing to the three Indonesian mufassir: Hamka’s Tafsir al-Azhar, Hasbi ash-Shiddieqy’s Tafsir al-Nur and Tafsir al-Bayan, and Quraish Shihab’s Tafsir Al-Mishbah. The article concludes: First, in respond to the human rights issues, Indonesian commentators tend to be responsive. All three exegetes denied those who claimed that Islam was spread with violence and those who opposed the death penalty. Second, on the relationship between human rights and Islam, the commentators have similarities and differences with human rights. Among these similarities, for example, is the issue of religious freedom. As for the issue of freedom to choose a mate and a death sentence, they are taking a different position from human rights. On the issue of death penalty, the commentators emphasize to not only looking from the side of the killer, but also from the right of the murder.

Abstract

The study examines the interpretation of the Coastal Javanese figure, Misbah Mustofa, who seems paradoxical to the traditionalist style of Islam which lies behind his socio-religious background. Misbah’s interpretation, indeed, shows the model of puritanical Islam. By using Hans Georg Gadamer’s hermeneutics, this article discusses Misbah’s interpretation of the QS. al-Baqarah [2]: 134, where he put his critics towards Javanese tradition, like tahlilan. The puritan style of Misbah’s interpretation is caused by several factors: First, the ideology of Coastal Javanese santri that makes Islamic sharia as a standard reference of religious teaching which tends to be more critical towards syncretic tradition of Javanese cults and rites. Second, Misbah’s pre-understanding of heresy and shirk. Third, the interpretation based on the general meaning, tends to be more textualist, and seems to ignore the virtue of socio-religious life of the community. The meaningful sense of Misbah’s interpretation is critical attitude towards religious teaching and proportionally locating permissive and conservative attitude in order to maintain the co-existance of religion and culture.

Abstract

The complexity of the Prophetic traditions is not only related to the validity of the sanad and matn, but also to the socio-historical setting that lies behind the text of a hadith, even also the psychology of the Prophet himself. Amidst the complexity, there are two large groups which have different construction of understanding and tend to be in conflict, namely the ahl al-hadith and the ahl al-ra’y. This article addresses two basic questions: first, how is the construction of the method of understanding of both traditions; and second, how is the typology of dialectic hadith understanding between two of them? Based on qualitative-interpretative methods and historical approaches, I argue that the understanding of the hadith of the ahl al-hadith pivots on the rules of al-‘ibrat (fi akhbar al-sunnah bi ‘umum al-lafz la bi khusus al-sabab, while the method of understanding the hadith of the ahl al-ra’y lies on the rules of al-hadith salih li kull zaman wa makan. The typology of understanding of the dialectic hadith between the two groups pivots on the rules of al-‘ibrat (fi akhbar al-sunnah) bi khusus} al-sabab la bi ‘umum al-lafz.

Abstract

One of the very basic idea of the Qur’an is on the humanity of the prophet as like other creatures. Every single person has their own creative potency (in potentia) which, according to some philosophers, enables them to reach the degree of prophecy. This idea has then made a prophecy to come to a mundane term which has not to do with any sacred property. Prophets and prophecy are then not considered as an essential thing in human history. This notion has clearly put aside the role and function of prophet in human life. There is also popular opinion in the society that the prophet is considered as God’s chosen people to receive revelation, but, at some degree, they are conceived as having no responsibility to proselytize people under God’s revelation. This notion, beside to releases the prophet’s role from his social responsibility, contains some logical fallacies. If guiding people to the right path is being an individual’s responsibility of the follower of monotheist religion, how it is possible, then, to remove the responsibility of the prophets toward their society. Therefore, this study aims to revisiting the concept of prophecy, and analyzing the prophetic mission in terms of thematic interpretation
