Abstract

It is a common agreement that Muslims in Indonesia accept nation state as a system which is not based solely on religion, but religion, at the same time, could be the main pillar and source of value in its principal. This paper is aimed at putting Indonesian Qur’anic exegesis into consideration, Hamka’s Tafsir al-Azhar and M. Quraish Shihab’s Tafsir al-Mishbah, related to the issue of state power and government. It attempts to delve into the values constructed by both exegetes on the Qur’anic verses related to the principles of the power and how those values are applied in the nation state formation. The results of the study suggests that some of Qur’anic values composed by both exegetes is: realization of nation state in a well-organized bureaucratic system, that is manifested in a good leadership, which is based on high competency selected based on democratic system selection (mushawarah). These values are able to be exemplified by both exegetes in nation-state frames with reference to cooperative and critical attitude towards the government.

Abstract

Culture has a significant influence on the interpretation of the Qur’an. The influence has somehow integrated into the process of interpretation, which often colors the patterns of it. One of the Qur’anic exegeses which identity lies in Javanese culture is tafsir Al-Ibri?z. Besides a vernacular attempt, which signifies its main characteristic of interpretation, the color of Javanese culture is also an interesting topic to study. It is because the content of Javanese culture has been inherent in every single verse explained in various forms and ways. This study argues that Al-Ibri?z accommodates the values of Javanese culture as a mode of interpretation of the Qur’an. Those values lay in the basic principles of harmony and respect, which are part of the local Javanese ethics, the value of the concept of kerajawian (tradition applied in Jawa) about kawula pangeran (relationship between human and god) relation, and the imaginative-projective nature of Javanese thought.

Abstract

This paper attempts to analyze the Qur’anic story of Ibrahim in the light of hermeneutical structuralism. It aims at unrevealing the meaning through its relational features of the language structure in each verse. Besides, the hermeneutical approach complements to our understanding on the text in a non-structural symbolic interpretation. By these two approaches, this paper finds a paralleled analogy between the moon, stars and sun with the statue and Namrud. The relationship between these things was evident from the point that the three were considered to be gods but no one could prove their qualities possessed by God. Another parallel was apparent from the logic of the birds, fire and goats. As Ibrahim has experienced several extraordinary events in his life, these events can be found paradigmatic relations that all of them are in the frame of sacrifice, preaching, and efforts to call people on the faith in God.

Abstract

The article addresses the tranced healing phenomena by locating it as a symbolic manifestation of culture that is related to the mystical symbolism and the Qur’an. The research aims to answer the question of what is the meaning of the tranced healing phenomena in the Kubrosiswo Bintang Mudo art show in its mystical symbolism context? By using qualitative method and semiotic approach, I argue that tranced healing phenomena is perceived as encountering two sources of strength, the black power which is coming from Satan, and the holy power which is coming from God. The success of healing the possessed people by using the verses of the Qur’an means a symbolic form of the power of the ba>t}il which is occupied by the rightly (h}aqq) power. This affirms a dominative power of God, because humans as ordinary people in their weaknesses of their physical body, when devoting unto God, then it is believed that there is no malevolent strength which is able to impair. In other words, healing is a symbolic manifestation of the nobility of human’s faith unto God.

Abstract

The Al-Qur’an Tarjamah Tafsiriyah, which is initiated by Muhammad Talib as a correction to the Al-Qur’an Tarjamah Kementerian Agama which was considered as a source of radicalization, has found its paradox in the Qur’anic translation regarding the relation between Islam and state. This paper intends to answer two questions: what is the strategy of Muhammad Thalib in translating verses containing the keywords of taghut, tahkim, uli al-amr and awliya' and how relevant is the translation to the context of Indonesian Pancasila and democracy? By using socio-pragmatic theory, this paper argues that the ideology of counter-Pancasila democracy has lied in the Al-Qur’an Tarjamah Tafsiriyah. It obviously appears in the texts of translation that Thalib attempt to fight for the formalization of Sharia as a state positive law. Muhammad Thalib, for example, more often interpreted the word taghut in the Qur’an as heretical rules. These rules are contextually interpreted as thoughts, concepts, and ideologies that lead people to go astray from the way of God, including democracy, pluralism, secularism, liberalism, and Pancasila.

Abstract

The Prophet tradition, which explains on how to purify a vessel licked by a dog, has a different editorial (text) and substance (content). This difference gives the impression that the Prophet is showing inconsistencies in giving teaching to his companions, which results in confusion for the next generation in understanding the hadith. To examine the truth of the hadith, the researcher aims at locating two standard methods in the study of the hadith that are to examines the chains (sanad) and content (matn). By these two methods, the validity of the hadith can be considered for its authenticity. Besides, scientific evidence by examining the saliva content of dogs could be an alternative way to prove the truth of the h}adi>th. It argues that the truth of the various hadith is in line with that of scientific research. The saliva of a pet can be cleaned by seven times of water rinse. While seven rinses of water can clean the saliva of wild dogs, and one of them should be mixed with soil.

Abstract

The article aims at describing the tendency of wearing a veil in Banda Aceh City and Aceh Besar District, which has recently increased significantly. It employs living hadith as a concept with a qualitative method that seeks to explore hadiths that living in Muslim societies, how they are applied and made into traditions in daily life. The article argues that the use of the veil was more based on self-protection than on theological motivation. However, they still held that wearing veil is a sunna. This circumcision is then understood in a totalistic ideal typology, which leads to the implementation of Sunna in a higher level of application. Besides, women who wear a veil feel more filled with religious nuance, which manifests in the attitude of ‘iffah (self-care), islah} (improvement of knowledge and behavior) and ‘izzah (feeling noble). Also, the religiosity of a veiled female affects in two aspects: socio-morality and psychological aspect.

Abstract

This study aims to discuss the ethics of public communication in a digital age, based on the hadith perspective. It is based on the poor ethics of communication in society, which leads to the emerge of SARA, hoaxes, and politicization of religion. The article addresses prophetic traditions concerning ruwaybid}ah that could provide values ??on the norms of communication. Based on the lexical meaning, the word ruwaybid}ah means people who are weak towards noble matters. Muhammad’s description through the editorial “fools who meddled in community affairs” has a close relation to the cause of social inequality at that time. Through a socio-historical approach, it argues that anyone who does not have capabilities in a particular field and tries to impose his or her incapacity, they could belong to the ruwaybid}ah category. Further, this study attempts to formulate key important principles of today’s digital age communication based on the hadith.

Abstract

Dala’il al-khayrat is a kind of fasting that has been practiced by santris, mostly, in Central and East Java. It requires the persons to fasting in range of one or three years continually. This paper departs from questions on how is this practice carried out, how does the transmission of knowledge come from and how does the foundation of the sacred text (such as hadith) lie behind the practice. By using historical method, the authors conclude that the practice of dala’il cannot be separated from the role of Shaykh Yasin who taught his students through the process of ijazah. In addition, we found that the transmission of knowledge on dala’il al-khayrat rooted from Shaykh Mahfud al-Turmusi, an Indonesian prominent scholar who taught at haramayn in the 20th Century.

Abstract

This paper aims to explain a theoretical concept of al-haml ‘ala al-ma‘na or muru‘at al-ma‘na to evidence a correlation between meanings and texts. It states that text should be inferior to the meaning. Based on our inquiry, verbs should be formed in the feminine (mu’annath) in two situations: first, if verbs consist of ism zahir (visible noun), mu’annath haqiqi (actual feminine), and no texts are bridging the verb. Second, if verbs consist of ism mustatir (invisible noun) with which the subject (fa‘il) is in actual feminine or allegorical feminine (mu’annath majazi). Thus, the masculine or feminine form should be based on their respective meaning. The careless interpretation in constructing meaning may lead to an error understanding, which is contrary to its original meaning. To avoid this, some approaches are needed, such as semantics, ma‘ani, siyaq al-kalam, and asbab al-nuzul.
