Abstract

One of the decline in body systems experienced by elderly is urinary system. In elderly, the decrease in the hormone estrogen causes atrophy of the urethral tissue and the effects of childbirth cause weakness of the pelvic floor muscles which can lead to disturbances in controllig urine output, which is called urinary incontinence. Elderly who experience urinary incontinence will increase the risk of falling because they have to go to the toilet many times, resulting in urinary tract infections and sepsis. The psychosocial aspect of the elderly will feel ashamed so they withdraw from society because they often urinate, resulting in low self-esteem, depression, and increased dependence on others. Efforts that can be made to improve urinary incontinence include non-pharmacological therapy in the form of Kegel exercises. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Kegel exercise on urinary incontinence in the elderly at Pesanggrahan PMKS Majapahit, Mojokerto Regency. The research design used preexperimental, the type of research used was one group pretest-posttest design. The number of samples is 24 elderly people with a sampling technique using purposive sampling. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire. The statistical test of this study used the Wilcoxon sign rank. Based on the Wilcoxon test statistic, the difference between pretest and posttest was 7.92 with a p value of 0.000, which means that there is a significant effect of Kegel exercise on urinary incontinence in the elderly at Pesanggrahan PMKS Majapahit, Mojokerto Regency. It is hoped that the provision of Kegel exercises can be carried out routinely so that it can reduce the level of urinary incontinence. Keywords: Elderly, Kegel exercise, urinary incontinenc.

Abstract

Adolescent obesity is a growing concern in Surabaya, influenced by multiple interconnected factors such as unhealthy eating habits, lack of physical activity, limited nutritional knowledge, family behaviors, peer pressure, and media exposure. This study identifies these factors and examines their impact on adolescent obesity, supported by the energy balance theory and behavioral epidemiology. Findings indicate that family routines and cultural perceptions of food play significant roles in shaping adolescents’ eating behaviors. The study also highlights how peer influence and the portrayal of food and body image in social media contribute to unhealthy lifestyle choices. Solutions proposed include the integration of nutrition education in schools, promotion of fun and social physical activities, and stronger family involvement in monitoring eating habits. Furthermore, school policies should support healthy food choices, and healthcare professionals should provide regular guidance and counseling. A collaborative approach involving schools, families, and health professionals is essential for long-term behavior change. This research emphasizes the need for community-wide efforts to create an environment that promotes healthier lifestyles and aligns with local cultural values. Abstract

Abstract

The rising prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) among adolescents has become a significant global public health concern, including in Indonesia. This literature review aims to explore the key contributing factors and effective countermeasures in addressing adolescent diabetes. Drawing upon 35 peer-reviewed studies published between 2018 and 2024, the review identifies obesity, physical inactivity, unhealthy dietary habits, and genetic predisposition as the most prominent risk factors. Additionally, emerging contributors such as psychosocial stress and sleep disturbances are gaining attention in recent studies. The review also examines various preventive and control efforts, including school-based health programs, family involvement, digital health interventions, and national policies such as GERMAS. While many intervention strategies show promise, implementation gaps and lack of culturally adapted models remain challenges, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Compared to previous studies, this review highlights a shift toward more holistic and biopsychosocial approaches to T2DM prevention in youth. It concludes that multifaceted interventions tailored to adolescents' specific sociocultural contexts are essential for effective and sustainable outcomes. Further research is needed to expand local evidence and evaluate long-term impacts of ongoing health programs.

Abstract

Introduction: Blood transfusion is a vital medical procedure but carries a high risk when the transfused blood contains infectious agents. In developing countries such as Timor Leste, the main challenges include limited laboratory infrastructure and inadequate infection detection technology. This study aims to explore the application of laboratory technologies in detecting and preventing infections during blood transfusions in Timor Leste, as well as to improve the overall safety of transfusion practices. Methods: This study employed a Systematic Literature Review approach to examine various studies related to the implementation of laboratory technologies in blood transfusion. The analysis focused on articles discussing technologies such as Point-of-Care Testing (POCT), Sigma Metrics, and Raman Spectroscopy, as well as the evaluation of their effectiveness in reducing the risk of transfusion-transmitted infections in developing countries. Results: The results indicate that advanced laboratory technologies can enhance infection detection and improve the efficiency of blood transfusion management. The use of POCT allows for rapid detection of infections such as HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C, thereby reducing the risk of transmission. In addition, the application of Sigma Metrics in blood quality testing improves testing accuracy and process efficiency. Raman Spectroscopy also offers a non-invasive alternative to monitor blood quality without damaging samples. However, the implementation of these technologies in Timor Leste faces challenges, including limited infrastructure and high operational costs. Discussion: Technologies such as POCT and Sigma Metrics show great potential to improve blood transfusion safety; however, challenges related to cost and limited availability of technology in remote areas remain significant barriers. The implementation of these technologies requires adequate training of medical personnel and infrastructure improvement to support their use in developing countries. Therefore, beyond the adoption of new technologies, international collaboration and external funding are essential to support the acquisition and maintenance of laboratory devices in Timor Leste.
