Abstract

Power not only operates through formal channels, law, and state institutions but also operates through a series of discourse to define something or a group as incorrect or bad. This study aims to describe the process of paralleling the construction of the Surabaya Pagi newspaper by using a critical analysis of Theo Van Leeuwen's model. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method to see the formation of an opinion on a newspaper text entitled "Narkoba Jaringan Lesbian: Dua Cewek Lesbian Bratang Gede di Pasok Bandar Dinoyo". The data in this study are news excerpts related to exclusion and inclusion. The data source in this study is the Surabaya Pagi newspaper. Data collection techniques in this research are by reading, understanding, and marking relevant quotations in the newspaper text. Data analysis techniques in this research are by identifying, classifying, analyzing, interpreting, and concluding. The results of this study indicate that lesbians are an easy target to build a bad image in the eyes of the public by forming a discourse that excludes the role of drug dealers (who are actually perpetrators of crime) and explores the role of users (lesbians) with a portion of the coverage that further builds the community's image of the group lesbians as a group that is truly wrong and a source of social problems increasingly corner the group's position in society.

Abstract

Under twenty years of war, women in Afghanistan suffer from oppressive situations and rules resulting in inequality and injustice. Afghanistan women face difficulties at all levels of Afghanistan patriarchal society. Male domination is the root cause of damaging to women’s rights in Afghanistan that brings impact to inferiority of Afghanistan women. Using radical feminism by Kate Millet, this paper tries to describe the struggle of Afghanistan women in gaining opportunities to move forward in their society. The analysis is focused on the female characters who deal with problem solving to their unfair condition such as Zeba, Gulnaz, Latifa, , Mezghan, Bibi Shireen, the wife of judge Najeeb, Sitara, Meena, and Aneesa. They begin to build self-consciousness, to demand autonomy in decision making, to declare resistance to be controlled by the men, and to get their basic rights such as the right to speak, the right to get education, and the right to work to earn money. The strong self-awareness and determination as reflected from the female characters are the women’s primary step to get rid of male domination and to proceed in their lives as well as in their society. Through this literary evidence, radical feminism emphasizes that women’s efforts to protect their rights means approval that inequality and lack of opportunities for women still happen

Specifically it reports the exchange structure changes when dialogues in novel is adapted into movie, the issue of fidelity that is involved in the changes, and how the changes affect information or message of the original exchange. This study adopts Stam’s (2000) theory on adaptation and MacCarthy’s (1991) theory on exchange structure of conversation to analyze R.J. Palacio’s novel Wonder (2012) and its film adaptation with the same title Wonder (2017). This descriptive qualitative study involves 9 data selected from the conversations of the main character,  Auggie,  in the novel and their corresponding dialogues in the film. Abstract

This study aims to reveal rebellion of main character in Lauren DeStefano’s Wither. The discussion is focused on Rhine’s rebellion which is trigerred by dystopian-life happened in the society. In revealing the rebellion reflected in the novel, Mercuse’s theory of rebellion and Millner’s theory of dystopian-life are applied. The research method applied in this study is descriptive qualitative with intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. Based on the analysis, the writer finds out that among the nine dystopian society characteristics, the writer has found five characteristics that are reflected in Wither, namely the society is an illusion of utopia world; the natural world is being a banished and distrusted world; perception under constant surveillance; fear ot the outside world; and information, independent thought, and freedom are restricted. In addition, the analysis of the main character’s rebellion shows that the rebellion happens as the impact of dystopian society faced by the main character. Rhine’s rebellion is done in four ways – having intention to escape from Linden’s house, refusing to be consummated by her husband, having relationship with Gabriel, and escaping. The reasons of Rhine’s rebellion are wanting to be reunited with her brother and wanting to have freedom. After doing the analysis, the writer finds out that science and technology should be developed for human’s better condition. Science and technology must not be expected beyond God’s power. When science and technology is developed without consideration in terms of humanity, it will result in chaosness.

Abstract

Narratives that we hear, connect dots to complete a civilisational story. Narrative strategies on Indian heritage of about 1000 years need to be revisited as newer counter narratives need to be factored in. If we examine our case of Sa?m Veda (ancient Veda singing date not known) and Dhrupad (probably from around 300 BC and still extant) through a natively ordered narrative framework. However, newer globalised narratives are ordered in such a manner that the story sounds strange to natives. The paper points out that this might often not be a clash of historical method and tradition, but focalisation or mere agenda. Also we often see narrators may not represent knowledge, being mistaken for the source of knowledge. For instance, a person trained in the Khaya?l singing tradition telling the story of Dhrupad or even Sa?ma Ga?na. This may involve focalisation.
