From the perspective of Sartreâ€™s existentialism, it can be concluded that Ahab is nothing else but what he makes of himself. Through what he does against that white whale, he gets his meaningful existence. Ahab exists only to the extent that he fulfills himself. Ahab gets happiness with his plan and act to kill his mighty woe. Furthermore Ahabâ€™s decision at the same time creates an image of man that in general will do the same thing.

The research aims to reveal how the application of dramatic elements of Dashner’s Maze Runner is transformed into its film adaptation. To achieve the purpose, the researcher analyzes seven dramatic elements by Gustav Freytag’s Pyramid which consist of exposition, inciting moment, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution, and denouement. This research uses the descriptive qualitative method. The results of this research are the differences of the dramatic elements in the novel and film adaptation are not significant because only the scenes of exposition and rising action are not similar.

Nyi Roro Kidul, Nyai Loro Kidul, or Nyai Ratu Kidul is a character of folk legend which has existedÂ all along south coast of Java land: from East Java, to Middle Java and Jogjakarta, then to West Java and Banten. People along the south coast of Java island believe to myth of this legendary character as a beautiful and supernatural woman who has authority of devil realm in Indonesian Ocean (Indian Ocen) or Segoro Kidul (South Sea). The popularity of Nyi Roro Kidul has also become motivation for national film-making and TV media to produce many films and drama about this character. Although there are many similarities about the revelation, among regions, legend and mass culture (film, TV); the representations of Nyi Roro Kidul show differences in theme emphasis.Â In East Javanese people, Nyi Roro Kidul is emphasized on the intention of people seeking wealth pesugihan (with the helping from devils) by sacrificing human soul for antidote. In Middle Javanese people, Kanjeng Ratu Kidul is representated as the take turn-wife of Sultans from Mataram, Sultan Panembahan Senopati to Sultans of Jogjakarta in the present time. The west Javanese people represents this figure as the princess of Pakuan Pajajaran Kingdom who is betrayed and abused, and throw away herself to jump into South Sea, then she incarnates as a beautiful and undefeated supernatural queen. On film and television, Nyi Roro Kidul is presented as a beautiful, sexy, cruel and sexual adventurer woman.

This study is about an analysis of Santiago's way to find happiness in Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist. Psychological approach and the help of psychological theory that are used in this study to identify the reasons of Santiago's strife to pursue happiness through his journey to Egypt. From the novel, Santiago's family life background is the main reason of his strife to find happiness. The result of the study, researcher finds some indicators of happiness according to Selingma's PERMA in Santiago's journey. Santiago meets relationship, meaning and accomplishments in the end of the journey. He meets the girl, Fatima, as the love of his life. He also finds the meaning of his life, which is to live without any regrets. then, he finally finds the hidden treasure as his dream. The three indicators help Santiago to be happier than before. From the analysis, it can be found that the reason why Santiago feels happier in life is because he never stops encouraging himself with the faith of his dream, the faith of his own destiny, and the faith of his mission in life.

This article explores one of Blake's poems entitled The Chimney Sweeper which sees gloomily the condition of child labour during the industrial revolution in Britain. In the poem, it seems that Blake critizes the use of children to work for family income. Especially, this article discusses Blakeâ€™s ironical discussion on the Methodism's teaching to work hard in order to have the eternal life in the poem.

FACTORS INFLUENCING AN EFL LEARNER’S PROFICIENCY: AN ENGLISH TEACHER’S PERSPECTIVE Pariyanto Pariyanto; Bramatya Pradipta

This study investigated the factors affecting an EFL learner's success in learning English. An experienced English teacher was chosen as a model of a successful learner of English and was interviewed on how she learned English. The findings indicate that the factors contributing to her success in learning English include (1) internal motivation, (2) social context, and (3) a positive attitude towards English. The findings of this study are in line with second language learning theories. This implies that such factors as motivation, social context, and positive attitude towards target language need to be taken into account to succeed in learning English as a foreign language.

This study aims to reveal gay habitus in Becky Albertalli's Simon VS The Homo Sapiens Agenda. This study is descriptive qualitative which applies both intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. The intrinsic approach is applied due to the fact that the study deals with the characterization of the main character in the novel. Moreover, the sociological approach is applied because the study is primarily concerned with a social phenomenon reflected inÂ literary work as the novel portrays the representation of gay habitus reflected in the attitude and behaviours of one of the main characters in the novel. In revealing the gay habitus reflected in the novel, Bourdieu's theory of habitus is applied. The discussion is focused on the Simon's habitation as a gay and the factors that contribute to the formation of Simon's habitus as a gay. The result of the study shows that Simon develops gay habitus. The representations of his gay habitus include are having no attraction to the opposite sex, adoring the same sex, obsessing and fantasizing about the same sex, feeling jealous and cynical to the suspected competitors, and falling in love with the same sex. There are two factors that support the development of Simon's gay habitus i.e. primary and secondary socialization.

This study talks about the forms and strategies of disagreement expressions used by the characters in in Movie Script Aaron Sorkinâ€™s A Few Good Men. The aims of this research are to find out the forms and types of disagreement strategies. The descriptive qualitative was used in this research and the data were the conversation among the characters. The analysis was based on Muntigl and Turnbullâ€™s (1998) for the types of disagreement strategies in disagreement expressionÂ andÂ for theÂ typesÂ ofÂ theÂ form basedÂ on Liuâ€™s (2004). The study involves thirty (30) data taken from drama plays. The study found that (1) disagreement expression can be identified by the form to describe the type of the sentence, they are declarative form involvesÂ twenty three (23) data of disagreement expression which is found in all types of disagreement strategy, (2) Interrogative form involves four (4) data of disagreement expression which is found in challenge and counterclaims strategy. (3) Imperative form involves two (2) data of disagreement expression which is found in challenge strategy (4) Exclamative form involves one (1) data of disagreement expression which is found in contradict strategy. Second, the result of the analysis also shows that there are four types of disagreement strategies usually used by the characters: Irrelevancy Claims involves four (4) data, Challenge involves nine (9) data, Contradict involves nine (9) and Counterclaims involves eight (8) data.

This article reports on two separate studies—Natalia (2019) and Subekti (2019)—on communication mechanism in political debates. Specifically these studies focus on turn taking strategies adopted in political debates by political figures during their campaign for presidency or in dealing with specific issues. Both studies adopted Stenstrom’s (1994) classification of turn taking strategies which include three main strategies: taking the turn, holding the turn, and yielding the turn, each of which was further specified into more specific strategies. The data were two Youtube videos: first, Trump and Clinton First Presidential Debate 2016 (36 minutes 22 seconds [Natalia, 2019]) and second, BBC World Debate “Why Poverty”November 30,2012 (47 minutes 16 seconds, [Subekti, 2019]). Employing descriptive qualitative, with the aim of analyzing turn taking strategies adopted in the debates, both studies found interesting points: first, Stenstrom’s three strategies appeared in the debates; second, taking the turn strategy was the dominant strategy, followed by holding the turn strategy and the least used one was yielding to turn; and third, interruption which was a specific type of taking the turn strategy seems to be most often used in the debater’s attempt to maintain the turn and present their points and thus dominate the debate.

THE EFFECTS OF THE ABUSE EXPERIENCED BY DAVID CHARACTERâ€™S IN DAVID PELZERâ€™S A CHILD ALLED AND THE LOST BOY Adeline Grace Marianne Litaay

The study discusses the effects of the abuse experienced by Davidâ€™s character in David Pelzerâ€™s A Child Called It and The Lost Boy. The theory applied is psychological theory about child abuse and the research method applied is qualitative research by Blaxter. Based on the research, it is found that the effects of the above abuse that David experienced were flashback through nightmares, the feeling of insecureÂ and frightened, low self esteem and inferior feeling, difficulties to trust others and develop friendliness, and deteriotating school performance. Besides, David had deviant actions (stealing), obstacles to understand and receive love and/or properness, and emotional control disorder.
