Abstract

This study entitled “Power Relation In Jacques Lob’s Snowpiercer” is about social issues between passengers in front sections to tail sections, depicted through the story and characters in this novel. In this study, there are two questions to be answered: The forms of power relationships shown in Jacques Lob's novel Snowpiercer and the individuals involved. The purpose of this study is to look at the many forms of power relationships and the persons that are involved in them using numerous characters from the novel. The author applies Michel Foucault's (1977) theory to illustrate how passengers in front and back sections interact in terms of power. The descriptive technique is used in this study, and extrinsic approaches are used. The findings reveal that there are two distinct forms of power relationships. To begin with, sovereign power is a sort of authority that has total control over all persons in a community. Second, disciplinary authority seeks to establish discipline bodies. The outcome also exposes that certain characters have manipulated information and truth via the use of power relationships.

Abstract

The issue of LGBT is becoming one of the research fields investigated in literary studies. This topic has its critical academic discussion, especially how this behavior is related to gender, identity, gender role, and even considered destructive religious. This research aims to explore how homosexuality is depicted through homosexual gestures pictured in Call Me by Your Name, a film directed by Luca Guadagnino and released in 2017 at the Sundance film festival, United Kingdom, and the United States. This film successfully received the Best Adapted Screenplay at the 2018 Oscar. The method used is qualitative and engages with queer, Judith Butler on Gender performativity. The technique is a narrow textual analysis in which we are focused on the insight of the film's narrative text and images. We explore the homosexual gesture in Call Me by Your Name as presented by the film’s main characters, Ellio and Oliver by focusing on three performativities, namely, performance, homosexual identity, and sexual activity. The results show that in the form of homosexual gestures obtained: First, the performativity of the performance describes the general character and clothing worn by Elio and Oliver as a same-sex couple. Second, the performativity of homosexual identity shows that the actors are homosexual men. Third, the performativity of sexual activities such as kissing, and sexual deviations that are carried out in inappropriate places. In addition, the sexual relations between characters show the homoeroticism of sexual role stability, where there is a character who identifies with the sexual experience of the partner.

Abstract

The contemporary Hollywood cinematic landscape is commonly filled with popular films that seek mass legitimacy. It is different from theatrical works or Broadway that are specifically aimed at connoisseurs. The ample evidence of popular films infers that American cultural field constructs its logicality in effect of this system. It affects at how one distinctively perceives theatre or Broadway as “art” and films as “entertainment", leading the actors within them to seek to be legitimized as an “actor/artist” in a distinctive way. This article specifically aims to diagnose this condition through Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu’s film entitled Birdman (2014) that tells a story of a washed-up American film actor who wishes to revive his career on Broadway. The research utilizes Pierre Bourdieu’s theory on the mechanism of symbolic power, capital, and trajectories to reveal the dynamics of the field in legitimizing one’s status as an actor and the paths one takes to be legitimized as an artist. The findings suggest the asymmetrical position between Broadway and films leads to exertions of symbolic violence as portrayed by Birdman. The skillset to act is not a measurement for one to be called as an “actor”, rather it is the complex nexus between the field and the agent’s background that determines the legitimacy.

Abstract

Literature is colored with gender studies that emphasize female struggle through social construction. The understandings widen from equalities between male and female to how woman should define her self-identity. Identity through gender is not static at all, but dynamic through its process as examined by Judith Butler through her concept of gender performativity. A Respectable Woman is Kate Chopin’s short story that tells Mrs. Baroda who is disturbed with the presence of her husband’s friend, Gouvernail, at her home. She is tempted by him but she realizes that and leaves home. She returns home and speaks to her husband, Gaston that she has made up her mind and be ready if his friend will stay over again. Then, how is gender performativity asserted on Kate Chopin’s A Respectable Woman? Through qualitative method on cultural studies, this writing underlines the wife’s firm state for not being tempted as her own self-definition. It becomes usual for a woman to fall to other man, but the wife thinks differently. She is aware of being tempted and she avoids it. Her identity is not defined by common ideas or dictated by male dominations. She is herself with her own determination by being so earnest. In conclusion, the wife’s resolution to step back, to think, and to return to her husband is her approach to define her identity. This is in line with gender performativity that is stated in line with Chopin’s focus on female subjectivity.
