Abstract

Displaying the probable future and the doom of humanity and the Earth, Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale (1985) and Sarah Hall’s The Carhullan Army (2007) are two dystopian novels that present the terrible state of women along with the degradation of the society and the nonhuman environment. Atwood’s the Republic of Gilead and Hall’s the Authority enforce an extremely oppressive, exploitative, and misogynist order on women, which corrupts the natural flow of daily life and destroys the human and nonhuman spheres. Depicting the resistance of women against tyranny through female protagonists, these novels picture dystopian worlds of chaos and destruction ruled by anthropocentric and patriarchal dictate. With this perspective, this article aims to discuss the problem of patriarchal oppression on women in dystopian societies as portrayed in The Handmaid’s Tale and The Carhullan Army from the perspectives of the feminist and ecofeminist theories.

Abstract

An abstract is considered a miniature of a whole series of scientific works. The contents of each chapter in the entire scientific result must be represented in an abstract. However, various abstracts have different structures from one another. Thus, writers of scientific papers have a choice with the appropriate abstract form, but at the same time, they also have problems choosing which structure to use. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the designs of abstract writing from the EFL undergraduate students who different academic advisors guide. A qualitative method with content analysis was employed in this study by examining students' scientific work under the guidance of other supervisors in the form of theses with a focus on the abstract part. As a result of the research, it has been identified that most abstracts employed informative type and structured format with different compositions. In addition, the research results would contribute to the description of the abstract structure utilized by the students as the object of this research. Based on these findings, it can be suggested that understanding abstract construction can be employed by introducing different types of abstract and their format in academic writing courses or research methodology. The lecturer can apply the strategy of compiling leading questions for each abstract type. Answering the leading questions has guided the flow of abstract writing ideas in a thesis.

Abstract

Word stress is a suprasegmental feature in English pronunciation. The word stress supports the correct articulation of English pronunciation. This qualitative research revealed the position of stress in English words. This research captured the pattern of English word stress. There are several phonologists discussing the word stress such as Chomsky, Hale, and Giegerich. The data taken was from the Oxford English Dictionary and from the English native spoken by observing, reading, listening, and noting. The way to analyze the data applied the textual analysis. The result of this research is the pattern of the English word stress articulation. From this research, it is known that the number of syllables determines the position of the stress. The ultimate stress occurs in two-syllable words. The penultimate and antepenultimate syllables occur in the words which have more than two syllables. The stress in the first syllable occurs in one-syllable, two-syllable, three-syllable, and four-syllable words. Stress does not fall on the affixes. However, the stress falls on the preposition for phrasal verbs. There is variation of stress position on the compound nouns and noun phrases due to their formation. Knowing stress’ position while pronouncing English helps distinguish the meaning literally.

Abstract

This study investigates students' attitudes toward the use of Google Translate (GT) in their online literacy practices. The study looks at the results of an online questionnaire survey completed by 70 students studying English Language Education at Universitas Sintuwu Maroso in Poso, Central Sulawesi. The purpose of this research is to examine how students' attitudes regarding GT manifest themselves in their reading practices, taking into account behavioral, cognitive, and affective components. The results showed that: First, from a behavioral standpoint, students consistently show a proclivity to actively use GT for various translation tasks, ranging from solitary words to complete paragraphs, essays, or articles; Second, students have differing cognitive attitudes about the ethical implications of GT use, with some viewing it as a sort of cheating depending on the context; Finally, on an affective level, students tend to accept the usage of GT as normal, enjoy using it, and may even become dependent on its features. This study gives insight on the complexities of students' attitudes toward GT and how these beliefs influence their literacy practices. Educators can better appreciate the obstacles and opportunities that come with the incorporation of GT in online language learning environments by understanding the behavioral, cognitive, and affective elements. This knowledge can be used to design successful educational practices that take advantage of GT's benefits while addressing its possible limitations in order to improve students' overall language ability.
