Abstract

This article is about the idea of gender intervention through toxic masculinity reflected in Nadia Hashimi’s The Pearl That Broke Its Shell based on the theory of toxic masculinity by Terry A. Kupers. Beginning from a position that sees masculinity as a socially constructed idea in a patriarchal culture, this article works through the concept that hegemonic masculinity under patriarchy can turn toxic. There is a connection between toxic masculinity and hegemonic masculinity because toxic masculinity deviates from hegemonic masculinity aspects that are destructive. Many toxic masculinity traits can be found in society. This research uses a descriptive qualitative research design since this study will be limited to explain on two traits that are found in the novel. The most prominent traits that can be found in the novel are the subordination of women and violence. The idea of subordination of women can harm women because it puts them in an inferior position. This idea is also harmful to men as well when they could not meet society’s expectation of being “real” men. Toxic masculinity also has the belief that to prove their manhood, men have to be able to act violently. From that idea, some characters in the novel perform violence because they want to fit society’s expectation of being a “real” man. This study concludes that the hegemony of masculinity under a patriarchal society can result in a bad situation where men are viewed as superior and women as inferior. It can push the idea of toxic masculinity, which is harmful to both men and women. It is because men's superior position in this situation can be destructive and harmful for both men and women.

Abstract

Directed by Harry Bradbeer, Enola Holmes (2020) portrays a 16-year-old girl who searches for her mother who disappeared while fighting for women’s rights to vote. In this movie, Victorian women are bound by a law that forbids them from having the right to vote. This article aims to identify and describe women’s rebellion in their struggle for voices in the Victorian era. Employing Bartlett's rebellious feminism within a feminist perspective of John Stuart Mill, the article analyses how Eudoria Holmes, a female character, undergoes dangerous ways in attempt to fight for women's rights to vote. Using the script and cinematographical elements, the film analysis reveals that Eudoria Holmes rebels against the values of Victorian society on three levels: individual, familial, and societal. Becoming an independent and courageous mother, she plants the seeds of rebellion to her daughter, Enola Holmes. Moreover, Eudoria also establishes a secretive women’s circle to build solidarity with the purposes of social and political activism in the form of women's suffrage campaigns.

Abstract

This research is motivated by themetaphorical language that often appears in literary works because literary works contain many connotative meanings, so they use majas. One of the literary works is folklore. In this study, researchers were interested in analyzing conceptual metaphors found in several folklore. The source of the research used is based on a collection of folklore entitled "Folklore from Cirebon" by Made Casta and Masduki Sarpin published in 1998. That way, the purpose of this study is to describe the types of metaphors, conceptual meanings, and image schemes in the cirebon folklore collection. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods. The data collection technique in this study is a reading and note-taking technique, namely by reading the book of the collection of folklore, then recorded and classified the type of metaphor obtained. The data analysis techniques used are analysis techniques according to Miles and Huberman (1992), namely: (1) data reduction (data reduction), (2) data presentation (data display), and (3) conclusion drawing. From the research, the results were obtained, namely from the 6 folklore analyzed, there were 14 data that contained metaphorical meanings. The metaphor is based on three types of metaphors, namely structural, orientational, and ontological. The results stated that this collection of folklore from Cirebon uses the most orientational metaphors with the image scheme that appears the most is the spatial image scheme. Both metaphors and image schemes are found in many folklore entitled The Origin of the Name Cirebon. This research is expected to be useful for literature learning in high school and for the advancement of conceptual metaphorical research.

It followed the quantitative method of research to check the views, preferences and expectations of the students on feedback on the digital answer scripts provided by the teachers. Purposive sampling was used in the present study. The sample consisted of 115 undergraduate students at the Department of English, Green University of Bangladesh, Bangladesh. The obtained data was quantified and analyzed using Microsoft Excel. The findings revealed that students acknowledged the importance of feedback in the digital answer scripts and prefer both negative and positive feedback from the teacher. The findings also show that the students expect corrective feedback based on the grammar and language errors in the answer scripts. However, the results revealed that a portion of the students focuses only on the score they receive and not on the feedback. Based on the findings, the study implies that the teachers should explore the students’ views regarding specific types of feedback and develop a method to provide comments that attract the students to go through all the comments and reflect for future improvements.

Abstract

This study is an attempt to examine ecofeminism in the patriarchal society of Frankenstein of Shelley. At first glance, the novel is a manifestation of the patriarchal world of Shelley because the male characters are present, and almost all of the women in the novel either kill or die. But it can be perceived that Shelley’s female characters are present in their own ways because they are present in nature, as a matter of fact, the female character’s absence and passivity are the emblems of their overwhelming presence so much that even the monster also has some feminine features, and he is used to being passive, because when he appears, it is either dark or moonlight, both of them have feminine attributes. The narrations of novel events are almost described in the sea, which is also the female symbol. Hence, Shelley tries to increase the women’s presence in her own ways in her novel through natural features. The presentation of natural elements influences Monster so much that he also reveals the feminine, goddess features. It can be concluded that the research method of this study is to find Shelley’s ecofeminism attributes, the actual presence of women, and their virtual absence due to ecofeminism, because Shelley has used their own specific ways to show that women are very present in her patriarchal society so much that even all of the male characters have dual features and the feminine features are not absent but they are very present in nature and characters of the novel. Therefore, women’s absence is Shelley’s method to reveal their absolute presence.
