Abstract

The Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) approach emphasizes the connection between subject matter and students’ real-life contexts to create meaningful learning experiences. This study aims to: (1) describe teachers’ ability to manage chemistry instruction on colloid topics using the CTL approach; (2) analyze students’ learning achievement in terms of knowledge and skills after the implementation of CTL; and (3) describe students’ responses to CTL-based learning. This study employed a quantitative descriptive method with a one-group design (one-shot case study). The population consisted of all eleventh-grade science students at SMA Kristen Maktihan, with a total sampling of 22 students from class XI IPA. Data were collected through observation sheets of teachers’ instructional management, knowledge-based achievement tests, skill observation sheets, and student response questionnaires. Data analysis was conducted descriptively by calculating mean scores and percentages. The results indicate that: (1) the teacher’s ability to manage CTL-based learning on colloid material was categorized as good, with an average score of 4.00; (2) students’ learning outcomes achieved classical completeness, with an average final score of 83.94 (knowledge aspect: 80.45; skills aspect: 89.20), exceeding the school’s Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM) of 70; and (3) students’ responses to CTL-based learning were highly positive, with an average percentage of 91%. These findings imply that the implementation of the CTL approach is effective in improving the quality of chemistry learning on colloid topics and is recommended for application to other relevant chemistry subject matters.

Abstract

The integration of reading and writing has long been recognized as a crucial component in second language learning. However, most previous studies have focused primarily on linear academic texts, with limited attention to the role of multimodal reading materials in supporting students’ academic writing development. This study investigates how multimodal reading texts influence the academic writing development of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students. Using a qualitative case study design, the study involved approximately 20–25 undergraduate students enrolled in an Academic Writing course in an English Language Education program. Data were collected through classroom observations, analysis of students’ writing samples, and semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis and qualitative discourse analysis to examine patterns in students’ perceptions and developments in their written texts. The findings reveal that exposure to multimodal texts such as infographics, visual essays, and digitally enriched articles enhances students’ ability to generate ideas, organize arguments, expand lexical choices, and engage critically in academic writing. Students also demonstrate an improved capacity to synthesize information from multiple modes into coherent written arguments. These results suggest that integrating multimodal reading materials into writing instruction can effectively support academic writing development in EFL contexts. However, the findings are limited to a single instructional setting and a relatively small participant group; therefore, caution should be exercised in generalizing the results. Nevertheless, the study provides transferable pedagogical insights for integrating multimodal reading and writing practices in higher education EFL classrooms.

Abstract

The transformation of vocational education necessitates that educators possess adaptive digital skills. The objective of this study is to delineate the digital technology competency profile of vocational high school teachers in Yogyakarta City, employing Pavlova's (2009) taxonomy as a framework. Additionally, the study seeks to examine the correlation between this profile and the teachers' years of experience in the field. The present study employed a quantitative ex post facto design, and the sample comprised 284 teachers from 25 public and private schools. These teachers were selected through proportional random sampling. The data were collected using a validated questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman's rank correlation. The results of the mapping process indicated a clear distinction in the degree of mastery of competencies. Technological Awareness demonstrated the highest level of achievement in the "very good" category, with a mean score of 21.13. In contrast, Technological Creativity exhibited the lowest level of achievement, remaining in the "fair" category with a mean score of 29.93. Inferential testing demonstrated a strong, significant positive correlation between length of service and overall digital competence (r = 0.713; p < 0.001). The prevailing tendency among teachers to adopt a passive stance toward technology use is evident, although teaching experience has been shown to positively influence the maturity of technological adaptation. These findings suggest a shift in training interventions toward project-based approaches, alongside the establishment of strategic peer-mentorship programs that empower senior teachers.

Abstract

This qualitative narrative study examines the perspectives of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners about the smartphone game Criminal Case as a mechanism for accidental English vocabulary learning. Despite the increasing prevalence of game-based learning, research on EFL learners' opinions towards commercially available games for vocabulary acquisition remains few. This study examines how 10 EFL learners evaluate the game's capacity to enhance vocabulary learning through its interactive hidden-object gameplay, visually stimulating locations, and contextualized language demands. Data obtained through interviews, and open-ended surveys indicate generally favorable perceptions, carefully classified into two primary dimensions: pedagogical and psychological. Educational perspectives highlight the game's ability to enhance vocabulary, support learning through visual aids, and serve as an additional resource for practical language exposure. Simultaneously, psychological perceptions underscore the game's motivating, engaging, and pleasurable attributes, which foster prolonged player interaction and objective-oriented learning. The study concludes that Criminal Case serves as a highly effective, interesting, and academically valid additional resource for vocabulary acquisition in EFL contexts. This study enhances the literature by offering comprehensive qualitative evidence that recommends for the integration of particular commercial games into EFL curriculum, positing game-based learning as a method to improve vocabulary retention and student motivation.

Abstract

This study explores how ambiguity functions in the Javanese dialogue of the Yo Wis Ben film series, focusing on its lexical and structural forms and their comparative interpretation in English. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach and content analysis, eight scenes were analyzed using Lyons’ (1977) framework of ambiguity. The findings show that lexical ambiguity, where a word carries multiple unrelated meanings, appears more frequently than structural ambiguity, which arises from flexible syntactic constructions. Expressions such as singo, yo wis ben, pedhot, and legi illustrate how Javanese speakers use ambiguity to produce humor and manage social relations. Theoretically, the study extends pragmatic and cross-linguistic perspectives by demonstrating that ambiguity in Javanese is not linguistic confusion but a deliberate communicative strategy reflecting high-context interaction. Practically, it offers insights for translation, intercultural communication, and media discourse analysis, emphasizing how local-language films employ ambiguity to convey cultural identity, humor, and interpersonal nuance in multilingual contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates morphological processes, specifically clipping and borrowing in the Minangkabau traditional song Ayam Den Lapeh. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study identifies fifteen clipping forms and one borrowing. The analysis follows a structured sequence: research purpose, methodology, key findings, and implications. Findings reveal systematic morphological reduction aligned with Minangkabau phonotactic preferences, including the avoidance of consonant clusters and preference for open syllables. The borrowing biaro, originating from Sanskrit vihāra, reflects early cultural contact in the Malayic region. These results contribute to understanding morphological tendencies in oral traditions and support broader comparative studies of Malayic and Austronesian morphology

Abstract

Headlines represent one of the most condensed forms of media discourse, requiring journalists to communicate complex events with minimal linguistic resources. To achieve brevity and impact, headlines frequently employ polysemous verbs whose meanings must be inferred rapidly and accurately despite limited context. This study investigates how thematic organization, within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), functions as a pragmatic mechanism that constrains the interpretation of polysemous expressions in English online news headlines. Using a qualitative descriptive design, thirty headlines from BBC News, The Guardian, and CNN International (January-February 2025) were analyzed through theme–rheme structure, lexical semantics, and Relevance Theory. The findings reveal a highly consistent pattern: 26 of the 30 headlines (86.7%) positioned polysemous verbs in the rheme, while the theme activated domain-specific frames economic, political, environmental, or technological that guided readers toward the intended meaning. These results demonstrate that thematic framing systematically reduces ambiguity and supports relevance driven interpretation in contexts with minimal co text. This study contributes to SFL by providing empirical evidence that the theme is not only a textual point of departure but also a meaning constraining device that shapes semantic interpretation, and it extends Relevance Theory by showing how thematic cues narrow inferential space and lower processing effort. Practically, the findings offer implications for media literacy and journalism, as recognizing how themes guide interpretation can help readers identify framing strategies in digital news and support journalists in managing potential ambiguity while maintaining communicative economy.

Abstract

Reading is considered elementary skill supporting the other language skill, such as writing, speaking, and listening. Despite the above importance, very few studies highlight the students’ perceptions regarding the writing activities. The research study examined the students’ perceptions on their reading activities. There were 40 active students, who were surveyed for this research. The research analyzed participants’ responses describing their view on their reading activities and the other relevant factors affecting their reading activities, such as the preferred reading sources, the reasons when reading a novel, and the ideal teacher in teaching reading. The findings revealed the students’ preference toward much shorter reading sources rather than the lengthy ones. The also stated that the preferred to read the news and relevant sources with their jobs/activities. Furthermore, they stated that the main reason for reading the novels was mainly due to the popularity of the novel. Lastly, it was revealed that reading activity was deemed important in improving both the students’ vocabulary and communicative capacity. They suggested that the lecturers be the ones who could help facilitating the reading activities.

Abstract

This study investigates the challenges of English language acquisition among Indonesian travel agents in their professional communication with international clients. Despite the growing demand for English competence in tourism, little research has examined how linguistic, affective, and contextual factors influence workplace communication in this sector. Addressing this gap, the study aims to identify specific language barriers, coping strategies, and training needs within the framework of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and English for Specific Purposes (ESP). A qualitative exploratory design was employed involving ten travel agents from registered agencies in Medan, North Sumatra. Data were collected through open-ended written questionnaires and were analyzed thematically following Braun and Clarke’s procedure. The analysis yielded four main themes: limited vocabulary and pronunciation, grammatical and listening comprehension difficulties, affective barriers such as anxiety and low confidence, and coping strategies alongside the need for ESP-based training. The findings reveal that English proficiency among travel agents is shaped by limited authentic exposure, insufficient output opportunities, and emotional factors that restrict communication confidence. The study highlights the necessity of contextualized ESP instruction integrating workplace simulations, pronunciation training, and confidence-building activities. These results contribute to SLA and ESP theory by emphasizing the interdependence of linguistic, affective, and contextual dimensions in professional language learning, while providing practical implications for tourism educators and industry stakeholders in designing effective English training programs.
