Abstract

Prosodic features such as intonation, duration, and intensity play a crucial role in spoken communication and are often influenced by a speaker’s first language when using a second language. This study aims to acoustically compare the production of an English yes/no question by a native British English speaker and a Javanese speaker to examine potential prosodic transfer effects. The data consisted of one controlled utterance, “Do you like noodles?”, produced by two female speakers (n = 2), both aged 25, to minimize biological variation in pitch range and voice quality. The recordings were elicited in a quiet environment and analyzed using Praat. The analysis focused on three acoustic parameters: fundamental frequency (F0) to represent intonation, intensity (in decibels), and total utterance duration (in seconds). Acoustic measurements were taken at the beginning and end of the utterance, and the results were compared descriptively. The findings show that the native English speaker produced a stable rising intonation pattern with increased intensity toward the end of the utterance and a shorter duration, which aligns with typical English yes/no question prosody. In contrast, the Javanese speaker exhibited a wider pitch range, decreasing intensity, and a slightly longer duration, suggesting the influence of Javanese prosodic patterns on English speech production. Although no statistical testing was conducted due to the limited sample size, the acoustic comparison provides preliminary insights into individual level prosodic variation. Pedagogically, the study highlights the usefulness of Praat as a visual and analytical tool to raise learners’ awareness of English intonation patterns and prosodic differences in second language pronunciation.

Abstract

The implementation of character education during the early transition phase in urban elementary schools encounters significant structural barriers. This study aims to map and analyze the network of operational constraints affecting character education programs in five public elementary schools in Yogyakarta City. A qualitative case study methodology was employed, utilizing in-depth interviews with 16 purposively selected informants, including principals, coordinators, and teachers. Thematic coding was applied to visualize causal relationships among the identified issues using ATLAS.ti software facilitating data analysis. The results reveal five principal clusters of constraints: environment, parents, program, students, and teachers. At the macro level, urban social inequality and parental dysfunction, such as neglect and denial, contribute to behavioral crises among students. Structural ambiguity within curriculum modules leads to operational confusion. The accumulation of these challenges creates a dual burden and systemic burnout among educators, hindering their emotional engagement in the classroom. In conclusion, the inability to instill ethical values in young children is attributed not to pedagogical shortcomings but to broader ecological dysfunction. The findings recommend implementing structured psychoeducation for parents and developing assessment instruments aligned with children's psychological development.

Abstract

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) learning is an integrated learning model that encourages students to think critically and independently. This study aims to determine the implementation of STEAM learning and students’ learning outcomes on the topic of mixture separation. This research employed a descriptive method with a One Shot Case Study design. The sample consisted of all 11th-grade students of SMAK Sint Carolus Kupang, totaling 16 students, selected using a saturated sampling technique. The research instruments included observation sheets to assess the implementation of learning and tests to measure students’ learning outcomes based on knowledge (KI-3) and skills (KI-4) aspects, referring to the minimum mastery criteria (KKM).The results showed that the implementation of STEAM learning was categorized as good, with an average score of 4.00. Students’ learning outcomes also achieved mastery, with an average score of 86, exceeding the KKM standard. However, this study is limited by the small sample size and the absence of a control group. Therefore, future research is recommended to use a more robust experimental design with a larger sample size.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effect of the Discovery Learning model, demonstrated through the demonstration method, on students’ participation and science learning outcomes in grade VII at SMPN 3 Camplong. The main problem addressed is the low level of student engagement and learning achievement. The research employed a one-group pretest–posttest design involving 30 students. Data were collected through observation and tests. The results indicate a significant improvement in both variables. Learning participation increased from 59.17 to 77.83, with paired sample t-test results of t = –13.214 and p = 0.000. Learning outcomes improved from 57.90 to 79.17, with a t-value of –15.002 and a p-value of 0.000. These findings confirm that the implementation of demonstration-based Discovery Learning effectively enhances students’ active involvement and improves their understanding of science concepts. This model is recommended as an effective alternative teaching strategy at the junior high school level. The novelty of this research lies in the analysis of the influence of Discovery Learning Based on Demonstration on Students' Participation and Learning Outcomes, which is still rarely done. This research implies that the application of a learning model that combines discovery activities with real demonstrations can increase student active involvement while strengthening conceptual understanding.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the characteristics of vocational high school (SMK) teachers in Ternate City based on their level of commitment and level of abstraction, to determine appropriate supervisory approaches. Although instructional supervision has been widely examined, studies that map teacher characteristics as a basis for determining supervisory approaches—particularly in the context of vocational education in eastern Indonesia, such as Ternate—remain limited. This research employs a descriptive quantitative approach with a sample of 93 vocational high school teachers selected through random sampling. The instrument was adapted from Glickman’s (1981) theoretical framework and has undergone construct validity and reliability testing (Cronbach’s Alpha α = 0.83 and α = 0.80). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings identify four categories of teacher characteristics: teacher dropouts (24%), unfocused workers (28%), analytical observers (21%), and professional teachers (27%). These results indicate that more than half of the teachers have not yet reached the professional category, thus requiring supportive and participatory supervisory approaches. Accordingly, a collaborative supervision approach based on Glickman’s syntax—comprising pre-conference, observation, analysis, post-conference, and post-critique—is recommended as a relevant supervisory strategy. Practically, these findings may serve as a reference for supervisors and school principals in designing differentiated supervision programs aligned with teacher profiles. Theoretically, this study contributes to the literature on mapping teacher characteristics within the context of vocational education in Indonesia.
