Abstract

Abstract

The Human Development Index (HDI) is an important parameter for assessing the extent to which inclusive and equitable development has been achieved, both at the national and regional levels. Madura, an archipelago consisting of four districts, namely Bangakalan, Sampang, Pamekasan, and Sumenep, is an integral part of East Java Province. This study analyzes economic variables, including economic growth, unemployment rates, and poverty, which affect the Human Development Index on Madura Island. The data in this study is panel data from four regencies on Madura Island from 2020 to 2024. The data analysis used in this study is panel analysis. The data used in this study is secondary data sourced from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS). The results of the analysis show that the variables of poverty and unemployment have a significant effect on the Human Development Index variable on Madura Island. Meanwhile, the economic growth variable has no significant effect on the Human Development Index on Madura Island. Therefore, the district governments in Madura must focus more on eradicating poverty and unemployment in order to improve the Human Development Index in their regions

Abstract

Traditional markets serve as centers of grassroots economic activities that reflect the dynamics of social, cultural, and economic interactions within local communities. This study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method, supported by in-depth interviews with respondents, and the findings are validated through a triangulation analysis model. The results indicate that vegetable traders in the Traditional Market of Tirto Sari Village, Banyuasin I District, South Sumatra Province, play a strategic role in fulfilling the community’s food needs and driving local economic activities. Their economic behavior is reflected in capital management, sales patterns, and the social interactions they build with consumers. Understanding these behaviors is essential for examining the economic rationality and social values that influence trading practices, while also contributing to the strengthening of microeconomic development based on local wisdom aligned with the principles of maqasid al-sharia.

Abstract

Women are central to sustaining the blue economy, yet their ecological knowledge is often marginalized in coastal development policies. This exclusion reflects a form of epistemic injustice, revealing a sharp contradiction between women’s vital role in ecological sustainability and the failure of policy frameworks to acknowledge their contributions. This study seeks to analyze the forms of epistemic injustice experienced by coastal women and the sustainable practices they pursue, while proposing an alternative and more inclusive framework grounded in the principles of Islamic economic. This study employs a qualitative critical-interpretive approach using a systematic review of academic literature, policy documents, and case studies from coastal communities engaged in Blue Economy initiatives. Data are thematically analyzed to uncover patterns of epistemic injustice, the marginalization of women’s knowledge systems, and opportunities for more inclusive and sustainable ocean governance. Based on field data, coastal women experience multiple forms of epistemic injustice, ranging from the undermining of their credibility when sharing knowledge, difficulties in articulating their lived experiences, to limited participation in decision-making processes. These findings highlight that, despite their vital contributions to marine resource management and the Blue Economy, their knowledge and voices remain systematically marginalized by social structures and local power hierarchies. In Islamic economics, epistemic justice in the blue economy reflects al-‘adl (justice) and al-musāwah (equality), ensuring that local knowledge especially women’s experiences are recognized and taken into account in policy-making. This study concludes that coastal women face systemic epistemic injustice in the Blue Economy, implying the urgent need for gender-responsive and Sharia-based frameworks that recognize their knowledge to achieve al-maslahah and truly just maritime development. Sustainable ocean governance cannot be achieved without centering women’s knowledge and agency as a foundation of epistemic justice in the Blue Economy.

Abstract

This paper empirically investigates the impact of climate change on agricultural production and food security in The Gambia from 1990 to 2020. Using annual time-series data, the study applies Augmented Dickey–Fuller (ADF), Phillips–Perron (PP) tests, and the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model to examine short and long-term relationships between the Food Production Index (FPI), cereal yield, land under cereal production, agricultural land, carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and population growth. Results indicate that cereal yield, agricultural land, and land under cereal production positively influence FPI, while GHG emissions exert a significant negative effect in both the short and long run. CO₂ emissions show a mixed impact depending on time horizon. These findings corroborate earlier studies in West Africa yet fill a research gap by offering a time-series econometric assessment focused exclusively on The Gambia. The study highlights the importance of integrating climate adaptation and mitigation policies with agricultural development strategies to enhance national food security. Policy recommendations include strengthening climate-resilient crop research, implementing low-emission farming practices, and institutionalizing farmer training on climate adaptation. The article contributes to the growing literature on climate change and food security in Sub-Saharan Africa by linking statistical modeling with policy-relevant insights.

Abstract

The blue economy is a way of thinking about sustainable development that focuses on using water resources to boost the economy, promote health, and protect ecosystems. The Bengawan River is one of the longest rivers in Java. It is very important to the community's social and economic life, both through farming and fishing and through ecotourism. But pollution, environmental damage, and overexploitation have put the region's ecological and economic sustainability at risk. The Bengawan community, on the other hand, has local knowledge that has been passed down through the years about how to keep nature in balance. For example, they have a tradition of working together to clean the river and regulations about how to use water. This study seeks to evaluate the feasibility of incorporating indigenous knowledge into blue economy policy frameworks to attain ecological sustainability while enhancing the welfare of the Bengawan community. The research employs a qualitative methodology featuring descriptive analysis, collecting data through field observations, stakeholder interviews, and a literature evaluation pertaining to blue economy policy. The study's findings demonstrate that the local wisdom of the Bengawan community possesses ecological value consistent with the tenets of the blue economy; yet, it has not been effectively incorporated into government policy. This integration necessitates adaptable policy measures that incorporate community engagement, rules grounded in local values, and endorsement of sustainable empowerment initiatives. This study offers a conceptual contribution through a blue economy policy model rooted in local wisdom, alongside practical recommendations for local governments and stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of the Bengawan River in Bojonegoro.
