Abstract

Tobacco has historically been a significant cash crop in Indonesia, with the tobacco manufacturing industry contributing about 0. 69 percent to the country's GDP in 2022, generating revenue of around USD 35 billion. The tobacco industry plays a crucial role in employment, economic growth, and tax revenue collection, particularly in regions like East Java, focusing on high-quality tobacco and cigar production. The paper delves into tobacco cultivation in East Java, specifically Jember, and examines trading relationships, price arrangements, and the economic and health implications of cigar tobacco. It highlights the history of tobacco in Indonesia, including the transition from Dutch-owned plantations to small-scale tobacco production for cigarettes. The fluctuating supply and demand of tobacco in Indonesia have been influenced by global factors, with implications for local farmers and the export market, particularly to the Dominican Republic and China

Abstract

The paper examines the effects of agent banking activities on the financial performance of commercial banks in Bangladesh. Employing bank level quarterly data for the period 2018Q1- 2021Q4, the study estimates a pooled OLS regression model to investigate the effects of agent bank specific factors on the financial performance of the related commercial banks (principal/mother bank) in terms of profitability measures, return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE). The estimated regression results show that amount of loan disbursement by agent banks and number of agent banking account holders have positive and statistically significant impact on the banks’ profit. However, the number of agents and/or outlets do not necessarily affect the profitability of the principal/mother bank. The findings of this study would help the policy makers, bank management and other stakeholders for decision making and improving the performance of agent banking in developing countries like Bangladesh.

Abstract

The guarantee of halal food products is not limited to only semi finished and finished food products, but also to raw materials consumed by Muslims, which in this research are chicken and beef commodities. This research aims to map the supply chain for chicken and beef commodities with the Halal supply chain concept in Indonesia by taking research samples at four traditional markets in Surabaya, namely Wonokromo Market, Balongsari Market, Kedurus Market and Pegirian Market. This mapping of the supply chain for chicken and meat commodities was carried out to determine any potential irregularities that occurred at each point and monitoring efforts to maintain Sharia compliance throughout the process. The research approach used in this research is qualitative research referring to Biklen's theory, namely starting from the Thesa (the concept and theory of the Halal Supply Chain) and the Antithesis (alleged deviations at each point in the Halal Supply Chain of chicken and beef commodities) which are then analyzed to form Synthesis (Results of analysis of the Halal Supply Chain concept in the chicken and beef commodity supply chain). The research results obtained are the process of tracing the chicken and beef supply chain starting from farms, livestock middlemen, slaughterhouses, traders in traditional markets until finally reaching the final consumer. In the supply chain process, risks of irregularities can be identified, namely the sale of tiren chickens, the feeding of dangerous substances to chickens and cattle, the slaughter of animals that do not comply with Sharia, and the sale of dedeh. Integrative supervision by the Animal Husbandry Service, MUI and the Consumer Protection Foundation is carried out to prevent the risk of deviations from the Halal Supply Chain for chicken and beef meat commodities in Indonesia
