Abstract

Urban growth is referred to as the expansion of an urban area into the surrounding environment. The expansion gives rise to sub-urban development phenomena called peri-urbanization, which occurs in physical, economic, and social changes. This paper identifies the socio-economic transformations in the peri-urban Bandung Metropolitan Area, based on the theoretical determination of socio-economic variables and peri-urban typology. The study emphasizes the main feature of the socio-economic changes in each peri-urban typology based on the discriminant analysis. Socio-economic transformation is analyzed on the variables of population density, household economic sectors, people's education, and the number of prosperous families. A Peri-urban area is divided into three typologies: Predominantly Urban (dominantly urban characteristics), Semi-Urban, and Potential Urban Area (dominantly rural characteristics). The data and information required for the study are generated mainly from secondary sources. The study shows that socio-economic transformation occurs in each peri-urban typology at different levels of change. The different characteristics of peri-urban typology and its proximity to the city center result in a high socio-economic transformation rate.

Abstract

A new interpretation is needed to give meaning to conservation in the urban development framework and to support a sustainable cultural environment. Based on Québec Declaration (2008) and Burra Charter (2013), intangible dimensions became matter to give a richer and deeper meaning to the cultural heritage area. A shift has been seen in urban theories arguing for attention to the multi-sensory approach. This concept becomes matters as the raising critique towards the domination of visual perception in the built environment's design. The domination of audio-vision starting to reach out by the practitioners and scholars, unlike the other senses such as smell, tended to overlook and misconception. This paper outlines a pilot study's findings addressing holistic person-sensory experience in exploring the role of odor in shaping the cultural heritage area in Pecinan nowadays. It will discuss various scents detected, personal perception, and the link between odor and Pecinan's character. All this data was collected using a smells walk, questionnaire survey, and interview. This research aims to explore the potential interface in preservation conflict between the character of existing historic town and change as smellscape is part of the intangible element and part of triangle components of a sense of place in supporting successful urban place.

Abstract

Nowadays, the percentage of adolescents living in urban areas is increasing, including in Indonesia. Unfortunately, urban planning and design are very limited in involving the perspective of youth, including the provision of safe public space. This paper is concerned with understanding safe public spaces from the perspective of adolescent girls. This paper aims to explore whether the neighborhood, specifically its public spaces, according to the girls' perspective is safe enough by using a case study approach with the case of a dense organic neighborhood in the city of Yogyakarta, Kampong Code. The information was obtained by observation, forum group discussion (FGD), and also by conducting a safety walk with local adolescent girls. This paper found that although from a normative perspective, public spaces in the neighborhood are considered as not safe enough, because they were familiar with this condition, they tend to perceive that as a usual situation.

Abstract

Surabaya is an urbanized area with one of the highest numbers of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Indonesia. With Surabaya's healthcare system on the brink of collapse, housing is crucial in extending healthcare facilities. Therefore, adequate housing is the most prioritized prerequisite for people to cope with the transmission rate of the virus. Unfortunately, public rental flats (rusunawa) are among the most vulnerable housing types due to their high density, lack of adequate facilities, and low environmental quality. This paper presents a two-stage investigation to uncover Coronavirus transmission prevention strategies in dense urban settlements, namely in rusunawa. First, the research observes transmission prevention strategies and measures employed by rusunawa residents and managers. Second, the investigation concludes with evaluating the effectiveness of the identified strategies and measures using cross-tabulation analysis. Data for this research was collected using questionnaires distributed among rusunawa residents and managers. Results indicate that effective prevention strategies differ across vulnerability groups. Thus, research findings can potentially help stakeholders and decision-makers enhance their approach to prevent Coronavirus transmission. Not only that, but research findings can also help inform and anticipate future outbreaks.

Abstract

Many investigations have been using disaggregated measurements to estimate individuals' CO2 from road passenger transport, especially in developed countries. Nevertheless, similar investigation in developing countries emphasized their focus on aggregate measurements and system dynamics. There is a lack of disaggregated measurement in developing countries, particularly in Indonesia, and how the effects of spatiotemporal variables such as socio-demographic, travel parameters, and activity pattern variables correspond with CO2 estimations. Since Indonesia is dominated by motorcycle users, this study will show motorcycles' contribution to CO2 emissions. The results of 2.23 kg-CO2 per day of individuals’ CO2 emissions in Indonesia is quite low in comparison to results in some developed countries such as the Netherlands and Sweden. It is presumably because around 86.05% of individuals in the observations used private motorcycles to travel and a low number of the undertaken trip in the BMA (Bandung Metropolitan Area). Around 91.39% of CO2 emissions were emitted by individuals who take 80% of using private motorcycles and cars. This study shows that the disaggregated modeling on estimating CO2 emissions might be able to reveal which individuals can be targeted to reduce their CO2 emissions and what can be done to help government policy in reducing CO2. Female part-timer workers, female non-workers, and senior citizens are those who show the lowest contributions to CO2, and providing acknowledgments might make them keep such achievements. Whose daily travel time is below 106 and 125 minutes might be clustered as the targeted group of individuals that can reduce their CO2 production. Incentive schemes such as providing internet vouchers or vouchers to use ride-hailing might help to change their habits to shift some of their trips by taking non-motorized mode, public transport, and/or ride-hailing services. Keeping public amenities at a farther distance might reduce people increase trips and travels by using motorized mode. But increasing the distance might make effects social exclusion, in turn, social health.

Abstract

Kromong Irrigation Area (Kromong Irrigation Area), is an irrigation area that already has readiness for the implementation of irrigation modernization (Sari, 2019). Hence, it is necessary to establish a Modern Irrigation Management Unit (UPIM), as an initial step to start the modernization of irrigation in the irrigation area. To find out the readiness for the establishment of UPIM, the data are needed for the existing irrigation management. The data were collected by firstly, interviewing irrigation officials in charge of the Kromong Irrigation Area. Secondly, distributing questionnaires to determine SWOT indicators to irrigation officials and the Association of Water Users Farmers Association (GHIPPA) in the Kromong Irrigation Area. Furthermore, the results of the SWOT indicators are weighted and rated to determine the Internal Strategic Factor Analysis Summary (IFAS) and External Strategic Factor Analysis Summary (EFAS) of each irrigation management agency. The study found that the readiness of mandatory functions in UPIM at Dinas PU PSDA Provinsi Jawa Timur had the highest value in the TOWS strategy quadrant graph (2.41 , 3.17), followed by UPT Pengairan Pugeran (1.89 , 2.24), and UPT PSDA Brantas Korwil Surabaya (0.78 , 1.86). All agencies have more strengths and opportunities than their weaknesses and threats. Therefore, DI Kromong is ready to establish an UPIM.

Abstract

Reservoir tourism is tourism that is widely associated with activities in water, such as lakes and rivers which are managed in an integrated and planned manner, so that they are ready to receive tourist visits. So far, the existence of reservoir tourism which is unique has not been handled and managed optimally. This trend can be seen in several reservoir areas that have lost their original character, and have even disappeared and changed their function due to neglect. Among them is the Cengklik Reservoir. So one of the initial measures is to identify the potential for reservoir tourism areas to be developed through the Eco-Waterfront Architecture Approach by paying attention to the surrounding natural environment and the function of the area. The purpose of this research is to formulate a tourism development strategy through the Eco-Waterfront Architecture approach. The formulation is based on the exploratory descriptive method, and the physical spatial mapping of the character of the area, as well as the social and cultural mapping. The final result is the formulation of the development of Cengklik Reservoir Tourism that is environmentally friendly and sustainable.
