Abstract

Background: Dental and oral health problems occur in all age groups, including the elderly. Dental caries is one of the dental and oral health problems. An epidemiological study reported that 83.5% out of 91 elderly respondents did not have a routine dental check-up. The data concluded that those who routinely have dental check-up had a lower caries risk than the others. The public health centre did not have data about the total of elderly visitors in the dental poly unit. The BULAN KESGILUT book aimed to help to monitor dental and oral health status in the elderly. Purpose: To help the dental poly and elderly visitors to have medical records related to dental and oral health using BULAN KESGILUT book. Methods: The program adopted an indirect health education method involving cadres and dentists from the public health centre. The counselling was done by group. The lecture consisted of dental and oral health material printed in the BULAN KESGILUT book. We have then informed the dentists on how to record the dental and oral health status in the BULAN KESGILUT book and educate the cadres on how to read those records. Results: The mean of cadres' understanding of BULAN KESGILUT book was 97.92%, and the mean of cadres' information dissemination related to BULAN KESGILUT book was 55.81%. Conclusion: The program results showed that BULAN KESGILUT was an effective media in monitoring dental and oral health status in the elderly. However, a continuous promotion by the cadres and the public health center is necessary

Abstract

Background: Patients with congenital absence of a mandibular lateral incisor are often found having difficulty in achieving adequate functional occlusion. It may affect esthetics, mastication, speech, and occlusal balance. Purpose: This paper reported an agenesis treatment of one mandibular lateral incisor case using a space closure method. Case: A twenty-three years old female patient with agenesis of tooth 42, mandibular anterior crowding, multiple diastema on mandibular anterior teeth, and skeletal class III malocclusion. Case Management: Space closure method was chosen to correct the agenesis by considering the class III skeletal malocclusion and multiple diastema condition. Conclusion: Space closure method treatment improved the patient's facial and dental esthetics, and it provided a good functional occlusion, despite the absence of a mandibular lateral incisor, which generally impairs the adequate incisal guidance.

Abstract

Background: Complete denture in the lower jaw often has problems. The entire loss of the mandibular teeth often has a large resorption, so it is difficult to obtain retention and stability. Purpose: To report mandibular  magnet retained complete overdenture is can increase retention and stability in the lower jaw. Case: A 60-year-old man came to the Prosthodontics Clinic of RSGM Airlangga University with complaints of the old complete denture that made by previous dentist, is often unstable while talking and chewing, so the patient feel uncomfortable. The denture has been used for approximately four years. Therefore the patient wants to make a new complete denture. Case Management: PFM crown removed and 31,32,33,41,43 are treated with root canal treatment. Magnet keepers are fabricated on teeth 33,43, and metal copings are fabricated on teeth 31,32,41. The complete lower denture is attached to the magnet. Acrylic material denture are chosen. Discussion: Overdenture is a complete or partial denture that is placed above the tooth structure or the root of the original tooth which is the support of the denture. Overdenture treatment can maintain ridge height, reduced load of supporting elements, and avoid mucosal irritation. It's necessary to add retention in the form of magnets to the teeth 33 and 43 to get good retention and stability. Conclusion: Mandibular  magnet retained complete overdenture is can increase retention and stability in the lower jaw so that the patient feels satisfied and comfortable because the dentures are more retentive and stable.

Abstract

Background: Two main influencing factors of dental and oral health in developing countries are attitude and behavior. According to Lawrence Green's theory, a person's behavior is influenced by intention, namely reinforcing factor, predisposing factor, and enabling factor. One of reinforcing factors that has an important role for a mother in adopting and promoting healthy behavior is social support. The study found issues on two social support domains, which were information support and instrumental support. Therefore, "Bu GISELA” or Buku Gigi Sehat Keluarga (Family Dental Health Book) was created to promote dental and oral health by habituating regular tooth-brushing activities. Purpose: To promote dental and oral health care and maternal social support in mothers and kindergarteners in Made Urban Village. Bu GISELA was expected to improve informational support in mothers. Methods: A total of 20 mothers of kindergarteners in Made Urban Village filled pre-test and post-test questionnaires. The obtained data were then processed using a paired t-test to see the relationship between the two variables. Results: A significant increase in knowledge (p-value <0.05) on post-test compared to pre-test. Conclusion: Mothers' dental health knowledge and social support increased significantly after they received "Bu GISELA”.

Abstract

Background: Cleft lip and palate is one of most common craniofacial anomalies. It is a congenital defect and can be resulted from genetic mutation, environment and multifactor causes. The problems of cleft lip and palate on baby complicate as poor feeding ability can lead to growth and development disturbances. Purpose: This article described the use of PSO in a 4-day old male neonate with unilateral cleft lip and palate and a 3- year old male child with soft and hard palate cleft, both with chief complaint of feeding difficulty. Case Management: Custom tray was used to deliver the alginate impression. The appliance was both fabricated using self-cured acrylic and with / without lip strapping. Discussion: Pre-surgical orthopedic appliances are most frequently provided by the pediatric dentist on cleft palate teams at most hospital-based programs. Conclusion: The PSO appliance could approximate the segments of the cleft maxilla by allowing spontaneous growth of palatal shelves prior to the reconstructive and definitive surgery.
