Abstract

Intercropping system is a double cropping, involving the growing of two or more crops sequentially or delaying of growing period of a crop. Effect of intercrop competition on the utilization of solar radiation, water, mineral nutrients, and space to grow can cause yield losses. This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of organic matter and planting time in intercropping system of peanut and maize on growth and yield. The research was carried out at the Experimental Farm of Haluoleo University in 2008 and was laid out in a Split Plot Design with three replications. The treatment consisted of two factors, organic matter as main plot and planting time as subplot. Results showed that interaction between organic matter and planting time had significant effect on seed number of maize, pod number of peanut , weight of 100 seeds of peanut, and yield and harvest index of maize and peanut.

Abstract

Bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus Lowe, 1839) is the important commodity for the fishing industry in Indonesia. Increased exploitation is threatening their population, so that is necessary to monitor the size composition that meets the eligibility to be captured, as well as the sex ratio as a management measure. Data was collected by scientific observers program which was following commercial tuna longline operation mainly based in Benoa, Palabuhanratu and Bungus Fishing Port from August 2005 to December 2014. Chi-Square analysis with 95% of confidence level also implemented to determine the sex ratio of female and male. The result showed that BET caught ranged from 30 to 192 cm, mode size ranged from 121 to 125 cm and mean 111,76 cm. As much as 69,5% of them was greater than a length at first maturity (Lm) and that means have been worthy to be captured. The sex ratio of (F:M) 1:1,32 was observed which indicates male was  dominant  than  female.  Correlation  between  sex  ratio  and  length proved to be significant where the female was increasing in size between 95-145 cm, as described a regression equation. However, an equal sex ratio occurred during December to January and also from April to June along the southern part of Java and East Nusa Tenggara and western part of Australia waters.

Abstract

Tobacco is a highly valuable commodity and Cucumber mmosaic vvirus (CMV) is an economically important disease. This study was aimed to determine the effectiveness of compost extract inducing systemic resistance in cigar tobacco against CMV. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design (RBD) with two factors (5/K x2/V). K factor consisted of five types of three kinds of compost extract, Pseudomonas putida and control, while factor V consisted of 2 types of with or without virus inoculation. Each treatment was repeated 5 times. Its effectiveness was assessed by observing severity of the disease at 24, 27, 31, 36, 40, and 44 days after virus inoculation. The result showed that application of compost extract or P. putida Pf-20 on 15 days before inoculation of CMV could induce the systemic resistance of cigar tobacco and extended to the period of incubation up to 22 days. Rice straw compost extract was more effective than leaf litter compost extract or coffee husks. However, the indication effectiveness of those three extract were lower than P. putida.

Abstract

Study on stomatal characteristics of some reclamation plants in the post tin-mining land in Bangka was conducted based on Wholemount method. According to the classification of stomata density, Trema orientalis, Commersonia bartramia, and Syzygium garcinifolium were belong to high density category (> 500/mm2), while stomatal density V. pinnata was in the category of medium density (300-500/mm2). The average length of stomata T. orientalis, V. pinnata, and S. garcinifolium include length size (20-25 µm) criteria, while C. bartramia include long enough size (< 20 µm). Based on characteristics that the four types of stomata plants show V. pinnata grown more adaptive of post tin -mining land in Bangka compared with T.orientalis,C. bartramia, and S. garcinifolium.

Abstract

A program to calculate the diffusion coefficient and predicting the depth, time and temperature of diffusionhas been developed. It is shown that the calculation result is in good agreement with the known conventionalone. The program has been developed using Visual Basic based on the Fick’s II law and the diffusion coefficientequation as an exponential function of temperature. It is argued that the program could improve the accuracy ofthe calculation of diffusion coefficient, depth, time and temperature which are important to improve the diffusionprocess efficiency.

Abstract

Ink made from zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles colloid has been synthesized by using a sol-gel method. Employing an XRD, it was obtained that the sizes of particles were around 3–4 nm. Utilizing a UV-Vis spectrometer, it was found that the band gap energies were 3.5 and 3.45 eV for the sizes of 3 and 4 nm, respectively. For the purpose of testing the ink effectiveness, the ZnO colloid was mixed with polyethylene glycol (PEG) 400 or glycerine. Using pure ZnO colloid as printer ink, invisible characters under natural illumination had been successfully printed on specific papers. Under ultraviolet (UV) illumination, the invisible characters became visible. The developed ink, therefore, has potential applications for security of bank notes or passbooks.
